He's the ultimate gentleman. He's been such a great ambassador for the sport of hockey in Chicago. Growing up I remember seeing the highlights of him Larmer and I believe Al Secord, please correct me if I'm wrong because I believe I am. I wish that I had access to the Blackhawks games growing up but I lived a couple hours south of Chicago and Rocky Wirtz's dad was the owner and wouldn't let the games be broadcast outside of the city. I'm not sure if he let the games be broadcasted in the city for that matter. Sorry for being so long winded. Great job and please keep up your outstanding work.

I only saw Denis Savard in person once, that being near the end of his career in his final stint with Chicago. His goal scoring had dropped off but he could still puck handle and dish with the best of them. I remember seeing him moving low with the puck, looking like he had it on the end if a string. He just moved around playing keepaway until he found a man open who got the goal. Fun guy to watch.

Denny has long been one of my favorite players. It was fun to watch him play, even in his later years, and wonderful to see him back to the Hawks before retiring. I'm glad the Habs and Jets both passed on him in the draft. The Hawks got the best of the three out of it. It's just a shame his Cup ring as a player came with another team. Patrick Kane reminds me of him in a lot of ways. They're of similar stature and agility, and they have a lot of very similar moves, like their spin-o-ramas. I'm sure Kane picked up a lot from him directly during Savard's coaching tenure.

You mentioned the Hawks / Oilers playoff rivalry's in the 80s. Funny thing is the Hawks finally beat the Oilers in 92 to get to the Cup Finals, only to get swept by Lemieux and the Penguins. But what is funnier.. is that if you look at the 94 Rangers Cup winning roster, it's largely a combination of Ex Hawks, and Ex Oilers put together by Mike Keenan. There really was something to all those playoff series back in the day.

I watched him play on the small ice of the stadium for years, he was first and foremost a playmaker. He had Larmer and Second on his line for the great years. Remember the owners were cheap and never wanted to pay for a championship team. Teams like the Wings spent more on their D core than the Hawks on their roster. The Oilers were a team that would roll over everyone. Only the NYI with their hall of fame line up held them off for a couple of years. In the end the Hawks never spent the money needed, it was always about making money until the son took over. Savard was magic

NOTE: Denis Savard and Doug Wilson are the only players in the Hockey Hall of Fame who played for both, the Chicago Black Hawks and the Chicago Blackhawks.
NOTE: Roger Neilson is the only person in the Hockey Hall of Fame who was an assistant coach for both, the Chicago Black Hawks and the Chicago Blackhawks.
NOTE: Jack O’Callahan and Eddie Olczyk are the only players in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame who played for both, the Chicago Black Hawks and the Chicago Blackhawks.
NOTE: Prior to the 1986-87 NHL season, while going through the team's records, someone discovered the team's original NHL contract and found that the name "Blackhawks" was printed as a compound word as opposed to two separate words, "Black Hawks", which was the way most sources had been printing it for 60 years and as the team had always officially listed it. The name officially became "Chicago Blackhawks" from that point on. This was a legal issue.

I remember so well the 1995 playoffs when he was looked upon as done, finished, over the hill washed up. Traded back to Chicago for moral support (or so it seemed) from Tampa. Savard was amazing again and found the fountain of youth for a couple of months being once again the player he was a decade earlier. One of the superstars of the 95 playoffs. Really meant a lot to his legacy. Seeing him razzle and dazzle in the playoffs scoring important goals and assists all playoff long. Were eventually beaten by a team ready to dominate for a few upcoming years. Had Chicago not taken a chance on the 35 year old Savard in 95 their playoff would have ended quickly. I think this was the High point of his career. A little bit like the 93 Gretzky. Showing he could still do it when most hockey fans had their doubts. People really cheered for him those playoffs, hawks fan or not. What he was supposed to do for Montreal in 93 he did for Chicago instead when nobody saw it coming. Too bad they met a powerhouse that ended a great run. A final appearence in 95 and perhaps a cup win over the Devils would have made that Savard run one everyone would still remember. They came pretty close.

One of the most exciting skater/scorer to ever play
When he came in he was small back in the day 5'9" 170 lbs
Remember it was a big mans game with lots of hacking, hooking, clutching slashing( often not called)
    Weikenheiser was considered a home run ( think 80g-80a=160pts ) 6' centerman
He was one of the purest skater, who could turn on a dime, accelerate while spinning
As good as Datsyuk & Kane are in that regard , I dont think they are on his level ( this is when you would be slashed , hooked while doing that- no penalties called)
Was a Montreal fan , who cringed when I think of savard vs Wiekenheiser
Cringed when they traded chelios for savard( to me his legs/ stamina was deteriorating...still exciting)

I remember the Savard draft year, Montreal not drafting him and taking Doug Wickenheiser was all anyone could talk about. And it didn't get better as, if I remember correctly, Wickenheiser missed a lot of games to injury right out of the box, while Savard was lighting it up in Chicago. To this, day, one of the biggest draft gaffs ever. The late Doug Wickenheiser is the cousin of Haley Wickenheiser.
