He's the ultimate gentleman. He's been such a great ambassador for the sport of hockey in Chicago. Growing up I remember seeing the highlights of him Larmer and I believe Al Secord, please correct me if I'm wrong because I believe I am. I wish that I had access to the Blackhawks games growing up but I lived a couple hours south of Chicago and Rocky Wirtz's dad was the owner and wouldn't let the games be broadcast outside of the city. I'm not sure if he let the games be broadcasted in the city for that matter. Sorry for being so long winded. Great job and please keep up your outstanding work.
Correct
Nope, you nailed everything!
Such a nice guy too, I met him at our local Sam’s Club and he signed a puck for me
I've met him too. Total class act. Signed some things for me too.
I only saw Denis Savard in person once, that being near the end of his career in his final stint with Chicago. His goal scoring had dropped off but he could still puck handle and dish with the best of them. I remember seeing him moving low with the puck, looking like he had it on the end if a string. He just moved around playing keepaway until he found a man open who got the goal. Fun guy to watch.
I was lucky enough to watch this legend play live many times. Great memories. An even greater player.
Fun fact that Denis Savard's only year without a playoff appearance was that first season in Tampa Bay.
Love him as a player, one of the most exciting players during his tenure in the league, the only time, I didn't like him, was when Montreal traded Chris Chelois for him, he was winding down and Chelois was in his prime.
@O K Yeah, probably not the way he wanted to win it, he didn't get to contribute on the ice, he was on the bench when the Habs clinched the cup.
I loved watching Denis Savard play, He was an unbelievable player.
The fact that Montreal choose Wickenheiser over this guy is still a mistery to this day. Talk about a complete blunder!
that draft also had "no names" such as Larry Murphy, Paul Coffey, Bernie Nichols & Jari Kurri...
@@gilbertgrenier4896 agreed just turn into a bust considering #1 & some of the players drafted that year
Denny has long been one of my favorite players. It was fun to watch him play, even in his later years, and wonderful to see him back to the Hawks before retiring. I'm glad the Habs and Jets both passed on him in the draft. The Hawks got the best of the three out of it. It's just a shame his Cup ring as a player came with another team. Patrick Kane reminds me of him in a lot of ways. They're of similar stature and agility, and they have a lot of very similar moves, like their spin-o-ramas. I'm sure Kane picked up a lot from him directly during Savard's coaching tenure.
Went back the other night and watched the 6 hour compilation of the 100 greatest players. Good watch.
It kinda scratched my hockey itch, for the night.
As a hawks fan it’s so fascinating to hear you discuss the careers of all the greats that played for us.
You mentioned the Hawks / Oilers playoff rivalry's in the 80s. Funny thing is the Hawks finally beat the Oilers in 92 to get to the Cup Finals, only to get swept by Lemieux and the Penguins. But what is funnier.. is that if you look at the 94 Rangers Cup winning roster, it's largely a combination of Ex Hawks, and Ex Oilers put together by Mike Keenan. There really was something to all those playoff series back in the day.
Thanks for doing this, I will make sure he sees it ;)
ONE OF MY IDOLS
Here after seeing the Chelios video. I miss your old setup Shannon with the cat tree right over your shoulder, I know it was a tiny room and you're in much better surroundings now, but I do miss this setup nonetheless, thanks!
I watched him play on the small ice of the stadium for years, he was first and foremost a playmaker. He had Larmer and Second on his line for the great years. Remember the owners were cheap and never wanted to pay for a championship team. Teams like the Wings spent more on their D core than the Hawks on their roster. The Oilers were a team that would roll over everyone. Only the NYI with their hall of fame line up held them off for a couple of years. In the end the Hawks never spent the money needed, it was always about making money until the son took over. Savard was magic
I’m officially requesting an Alex Kovalev career video.
Great Savard video, inspired me to make him in NHL 14 and throwing him on my Hawks squad with Belfour, Roenick, Amonte, and Chelly.
One of my favourite players ever. I modelled my street hockey game after him. Love the spinorama.
Wish I had known this in 1993, then I could have gotten excited about the Lightning signing him. My entire knowledge of him is from NHL '94 when he was surprisingly highly rated - at least to me since I didn't know how good he was, and it wasn't like you could just find out anything you wanted in 1993.
NOTE: Denis Savard and Doug Wilson are the only players in the Hockey Hall of Fame who played for both, the Chicago Black Hawks and the Chicago Blackhawks.
NOTE: Roger Neilson is the only person in the Hockey Hall of Fame who was an assistant coach for both, the Chicago Black Hawks and the Chicago Blackhawks.
NOTE: Jack O’Callahan and Eddie Olczyk are the only players in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame who played for both, the Chicago Black Hawks and the Chicago Blackhawks.
NOTE: Prior to the 1986-87 NHL season, while going through the team's records, someone discovered the team's original NHL contract and found that the name "Blackhawks" was printed as a compound word as opposed to two separate words, "Black Hawks", which was the way most sources had been printing it for 60 years and as the team had always officially listed it. The name officially became "Chicago Blackhawks" from that point on. This was a legal issue.
I met him in a bar at nashville when the hawks were playing the preds when I was a kid and he's a super nice guy
I stand corrected... You're the best Shannon!(I almost called you Mr Hockey?!?)
Just imagine if he played with today’s modern skates, sticks,& rules.
Hard to believe that , at least at the start of his career , he had a 2-pack-a-day habit...while playing NHL hockey.
(Steve Larmer was a smoker , too).
"Savvy" was obviously a great , exciting offensive talent , but he also was a lot grittier than most knew.
He had some EPIC battles with Dino Ciccarelli and the North Stars back in the 1980s.
A true lengend for the hawks!!
I remember so well the 1995 playoffs when he was looked upon as done, finished, over the hill washed up. Traded back to Chicago for moral support (or so it seemed) from Tampa. Savard was amazing again and found the fountain of youth for a couple of months being once again the player he was a decade earlier. One of the superstars of the 95 playoffs. Really meant a lot to his legacy. Seeing him razzle and dazzle in the playoffs scoring important goals and assists all playoff long. Were eventually beaten by a team ready to dominate for a few upcoming years. Had Chicago not taken a chance on the 35 year old Savard in 95 their playoff would have ended quickly. I think this was the High point of his career. A little bit like the 93 Gretzky. Showing he could still do it when most hockey fans had their doubts. People really cheered for him those playoffs, hawks fan or not. What he was supposed to do for Montreal in 93 he did for Chicago instead when nobody saw it coming. Too bad they met a powerhouse that ended a great run. A final appearence in 95 and perhaps a cup win over the Devils would have made that Savard run one everyone would still remember. They came pretty close.
I recall that draft. And the fallout.
The leafs where always my go to team when I became a fan in 87. Denis Savard made me a Blackhawks fan. Then Mario Lemieux made me Pens fan. Although the leafs have let me down year after year with some great teams and runs mixed in. At least Chicago and Pittsburgh let me enjoy a few cup celebrations.
As a Chicagoan, my all time favorite player.
Elite player and arguably one of the most skilled during his time not named Lemieux, Gretzky or Nilsson.
Think of the Cups the Habs could have won in the 80s and 90s if they'd drafted Savard. I'm surprised they didn't keep up their tradition of drafting the Francophone guy in the 1st round. I mean, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?
I feel bad for those too young to have ever heard Danny Gallivan call a game. What he did to the English Language was either high art-- or high crime. People were divided on that, but never not entertained.
Chris Chelios was my first favorite active player as a young boy Habs fan. I'll leave it at that.
Have you done a video on Brian Sutter? The only disappointment from the Blues Cup run is how much he wasn’t celebrated/included considering how much he meant to the team throughout the 80’s
I would be really interested in seeing a video where you compare different 80s centers that arent named gretzky. Feels like a lot of them had a fairly comparable amount of points at the end of the career like Hawerchuk, Savard, Stastny, Trottier etc
You would have to include centers not named Lemieux either.
I would be tickled pink if you were to do a video on Terry Sawchuk!:)
Had to do a double take with Savard's 1985 playoff numbers. Almost two points-per-game in the playoffs! Incredible, even in the 80s. No one outside of the Finals has ever won the Conn Smythe, but that might've been one of the better picks to become the first one.
One of the most exciting skater/scorer to ever play
When he came in he was small back in the day 5'9" 170 lbs
Remember it was a big mans game with lots of hacking, hooking, clutching slashing( often not called)
Weikenheiser was considered a home run ( think 80g-80a=160pts ) 6' centerman
He was one of the purest skater, who could turn on a dime, accelerate while spinning
As good as Datsyuk & Kane are in that regard , I dont think they are on his level ( this is when you would be slashed , hooked while doing that- no penalties called)
Was a Montreal fan , who cringed when I think of savard vs Wiekenheiser
Cringed when they traded chelios for savard( to me his legs/ stamina was deteriorating...still exciting)
Great player overshadowed by some other great players and teams in the 80s/90s.
I was too young to have seen Savvy in his prime. But he was worth the price admission
Hawerchuk on Denis Savard's induction to HOF (Savard had been inducted BEFORE Ducky) went something like this: "Go ahead don't induct me but for gawd's sake don't lower the bar and not let me in" something like that. Nothing against Hawerchuk but that was pure Ducky - tell it like it is!
I remember the Savard draft year, Montreal not drafting him and taking Doug Wickenheiser was all anyone could talk about. And it didn't get better as, if I remember correctly, Wickenheiser missed a lot of games to injury right out of the box, while Savard was lighting it up in Chicago. To this, day, one of the biggest draft gaffs ever. The late Doug Wickenheiser is the cousin of Haley Wickenheiser.
If I remember correctly, that 3rd overall pick belonged to Quebec initially?
@@dnasty312 , Not sure, but looking over that draft, Montreal, also passed on Larry Murphy and Paul Coffey, who went 4th and 6th overall respectively.
could you do a video about Dave Babych's moustache?
Travis Green career video please?
Spin-o-Rama. That is all.
Still though, Savard vs. Gretzky...MAN that must have been really something wonderful to watch despite the outcomes.
And don’t forget in Montreal he sat out to let a kid get his name on the cup in the closing games
Poor Doug Wickenheiser r.i.p.
One thing I'd like you to add to these videos is if they were on the greatest 100 list
Savardian spin - O - rama
This guy was absolutely absurd
If you’re taking suggestions for career videos, maybe Daniel Alfredsson
I remember Don Cherry showing his highlights and saying he looked like a water bug on ice, when referring to how fast he could skate and spin around people. “The spinarama”.
I also pretty sure he wasn’t dressed for the Stanley Cup in 93.
Didn't the team carry a suited Denis on their shoulders when they won the Cup?
@@dnasty312 , like in a suit and tie? Yes.
Eric Daze?
Hey
Denny reminds me of Pavel D - why?

@@OttawaNow Very Interesting I didn't know that! But I'm so sorry I just don't see the difference and neither does the HHOF. Same league, same city, same jersey, same history. Putting two words together doesn't change much.
😎👍🇨🇦🇺🇸💗🏒🥅🚨SAVOIR FAIRE!!!
Kinda hard to feel bad for the Jets losing Gretzky, when they also blow this draft with Babych over Savard lol
But then do they get Dale Hawerchuk the following year?
@@dnasty312 True good point! 3rd time is the charm.
boy did mtl fuck up....twice
In the '80s he would've started out in the IHL not the AHL.
The AHL was still a thing in the 80s. www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/display_affiliations_parent.php?tmi=5218
@@TheHockeyGuy My bad. I thought that the IHL was the "juniors" for them at the time.
Did they ever say why they chose Dougie over Denis?
Perhaps they thought because he was the captain in Regina and played in the Memorial Cup tournament that he'd do well with the Habs, to where Savard didn't, I don't have an answer otherwise.
Easily one of the best players with no cup, with Marcel Dionne... If I'm remembering correctly
Pat Lafontaine, Dale Hawerchuk, Gilbert Perreault, Cam Neely... Been quite a few.
@@jeffreyg4626 hey, 3 of them fellas wuz Sabres, huh... OK, I'll fess up, Buffalo has been my team since they Drafted Tom Barrasso... Seems to me The Sabres are at their best when they build from the net out... Tom Barrasso, Dominic Hasek, Ryan Miller...
Savard got a Cup with Montreal.
Shifty
Hahaha🤫🤔🎱Savardian. Is, it something like keynesian economics.....Tad, younger than shannon, but remember players like this, like it was yesterday. Poor man's, gretzky ? No, Savard was unique. #Spinorama.
47, was the high. Sorta, like coffey, never breaking 50.
Blackhawks' Cups
Oddly enough, Denis Savard is in no way related to Serge Savard.
