Jonas Neubauer dethroned at CTWC 2018 by Joseph Saelee (classic tetris world championships)

- 2018 Classic Tetris World Championship has a new champion. Joseph Saelee only picked up NES Tetris about a year ago, and in that short span of time, he broke many records including (but not limited to) maxing out the game with 1 hand, and getting to level 32 (99% of players cannot get past 29). He is a pro's pro, baffling even the greatest players in the world, most of which have been playing longer than Joseph has been alive. I was one of the founders of this contest, back in 2010, and never thought I'd see a young player come in and dominate like Joseph has. We are witnessing the young Bobby Fischer of Tetris and we will watch him closely as the years go by. I was lucky enough to have a front row seat to witness this amazing performance.
I love how Jonas looks glad and applauds his rival. This is how looks a real legend.
Jonas is a gentleman.
He looked impressed
One thing that sets competitive Tetris apart from other eSports is that it grew up in the underground and wasn't infected by fame and fortune, so its best players were already mature, humble adults. Jonas is the best ambassador community could ask for, because you get the sense that he's an awesome dude first, and a Tetris master second.
Look at the freakin' score! Jonas has a score of over 900 thousand and STILL lost! A very much deserved win by Joseph. Congratulations!
Jonas Neubauer
April 19, 1981 - January 5, 2021
Passing the torch to the new generations.
Thanks for everything Jonas!
Will remember you the most in October during CTWC...
It seems like Jonas was relieved to have that target taken off his back lol, thank you for crowd's perspective of this tournament!
These guys just LOVE the game and love growing it - like a round table of nostalgic people who all grew up with that common interest - unlike tournaments such as EVO where there are massive money prizes and more at stake and far too many players 'in it to win it' rather than out of passion. These guys are playing in a tournament bourne out of passion for one of the most simplistic but deceptively complex and intriguing retro-titles of all time.
Jonas seems like a humble dude who I'm sure as an ambassador for the game would be welcoming of fresh blood to the scene, more-so as champions. No champ can rule forever and no scene lasts long without a circulation of competition to keep it fresh. Getting dethroned (so to speak) just means you have more reason to up your game next time and helps keep the love of the game alive.
Good job Joseph! You truly deserved this win! I remember sitting in math class and you would just play Tetris after doing the work; that’s what got you started. I can’t wait to see you Saturday at the marching band competition!
TheBandGeek | Band, Orchestra, Jazz, MORE! What does Joseph play in marching band?
@@prashanthkumaran2768 He plays trombone, I saw it at his stream!
"Its asian I cant tell" my favorite part
That a bit racist.
@@nivenworld6035 He looks asian so it's okay
It looks like me, in my country it seems normal.
Wow, never expected Jonas to get beaten. Miracle that one can be this good at tetris at just 16 years old, but I guess that's how it works with games. Congratulations and much respect to Joseph!
This isn't the first time Jonas has been beaten. He lost to Harry Hong in 2014.
Not really relevant since Harry and Jonas have been playing for over a decade, almost two. Joseph has only been playing this game for a year.
Hypertapping gave him an advantage at lvl19 and higher, you can move pieces faster left and right, so he could take a lot more risk (as far as I know). And If he doesn't learn it, he will have a hard time in future events.
@@Someone-td3rp Disagree. None of the scores that were put up were unbeatable using DAS. Jonas made quite a few mistakes by playing more aggressive than he was comfortable with. DAS is entirely capable of kicking 1.2 million or more points, but nobody maxxed out in the main event. Hypertapping I don't feel is required for top level play.
I watched (at least the first match) again and it seems exactly like it. He even said it, when he couldn't get it fast enough over there. It's on his twitch channel. You have definitely a disadvantage without hypertapping. And how do you know, if you get the right pieces in time before it gets too high. You have to burn more just in case. Yes, he played agressive, but because of this
Such a fantastic moment in the Tetris history...
Even now I still have chills over this. It took a high school teen to slay the dragon known as Jonas Neubauer...
The legend is still growing!!!! #SaeleeTheGreat!!!! 😊😊😊😊
Interesting how you referred Joseph Saelee to Bobby Fischer, because his opponent, Boris Spassky, clapped for Fischer with his pawn sacrifice at game 6 of the World Chess Championship 1972.
Jonas did the exact same thing.
Hi this is Mato in this Video we have a excellent game between Joseph and Jonas Joseph started on left and began with T block
Awesome vid, thanks for uploading
Joseph is a genius at Tetris, way beyond a good player - an artist
I know! The way he hyper-taps and spins shit, oh my GAWD. Poetry in motion!
This had ME crying. What a amazing player!
Jonas will be back
He will become stronger the next year
@@Jules-xt4ow hypertap
Then ended up losing in round 1 hahaha
Wowww... Great job Joseph !!! Reppin!!!!
Good on him!
If you saw the qualifier scores in the past 3 years, you would know that this competition is getting more competitive, 7 people got a maxout score during the qualifiers and not to mention the others who didn't maxout but still had a very high score.
Jonas is coming for blood next year.
Respect!
He was completely dethroned
That last round reminds me of Harry vs Buco from 2017 xD
Jeff, Jonas, Joseph... seems like the letter J is something special in Tetris? That's good, because my name starts with a J, too...? :P
But my personal best is just around 250k, lol.
Sadly i have no j in my name
This is going to be like Cars 3
Rodolfo Rodriguez that’s what I said
BOOM!
It's okay Jonas, you're still the best human Tetris player. Because I'm fairly certain Joseph is an alien from Tetris Planet.
I miss Chris Tang with his : Boom Tetris for Jeff !
JJJ : Jonas Joseph Jeff
Alone because I saw the title of this vid in my feed, I was spoilered very hard for the finale............
Excuse my mediocre english, but what did they say at 5:10? Jonas got what? sweat? swapped? What does it mean.
"Swept" meaning he lost decisively (Joseph won all three games).
+Anomaly92 They said "swept". It's a term that's used when one player, or team loses every set or round in a match. Jonas lost 3 times in this game, and didn't win once. So he got "swept".
Yata! Joseph SWEPT the championship?! Oh, man. 😰😰 Talk about a Tetris juggernaut even too much for Jonas...!!
OMG HIS SISTER DAMN.
0:52 El Duce from the Mentors is alive
link to the whole match
The classic world tetris channel will have it if not today soon
This looks so weird seeing it in a other perspective lol
Cars 3 huh
Well thanks to the stupid way the official channel is rolling out the videos. This got spoiled with the title. Sucks Jonas lost but damn Joseph is talented af.
Yes they are soooo slow in uploading vids. Sad to be spoiled like this
Hey, great video and all. But maybe next time put a *spoiler warning* or something
You kinda ruined it for me..
Crushkiller09 I know right haha
Jonas wasn't concentrated
He was down 2-0
There's no reason to downplay Joseph's win
He also was very close to a max out
@@duck7496 its true though. When i watched the live stream I could tell that Jonas was super nervous, and he even said before thr match hes going to have to play differently to win, which ultinately made him lose.
Does not mean that Joseph didnt deserve to win, but anyone who watches this every year, or jonas' stream/channel would realize his game was way off.

The alcoholic champ is destroyed! Fantastic!
