I Bought Two "Not Working" Apple HomePods from OWC for $99 Each! Did We Get Lucky??

  • I was doing my usual google search for "homepod" when I noticed an ad from OWC for original A1639 Apple HomePods for $99 each! They only had "Not working" in the title, and no additional information whatsoever in the item description. I took the gamble and purchased one in each color....are they actually broken, or are they bricks?
There is not much information on the flashing / blinking volume buttons issue still...I have not gotten any closer to a solution yet. I have a dedicated section on my website talking more about this issue; homepodrepair.com/#blinkblink
I realized after filming that I started recording with the ultrawide lens on my iphone, then zoomed in, which is probably why the quality looks horrible. Sucks to suck.

I have a gen1 HomePod that got stuck on blinking volume buttons loop. Would power on but after about ten seconds it would start blinking again.
I tried everything I could think of and nothing worked, so I was stuck.
Then I kind of gave up and put it away on the balcony of my apartment where the temperature was like +-0c or 30f.
After a couple of hours decided to give it a one last go right there in the cold balcony. Plugged it in and it started right up 😳 I was able to update it from 16.6 to 17.4 with no problems. Brought it in and it has now been working for three days in heavy use.
Coincidence or effect of the cold weather? Software update help with the loop?

I think I found out how to fix the boot loop problem.

Ok so i dont know if you already know this but. The Apple homepod has a secret pin that allows a jailbreak. Over the jailbreak you should be able to modify/Reinstall the os@@NicsFix

Have a HomePod which had a diod fault. Replaced it and HomePod light came one for a sec then it is dead again. Diod is fine measuring no short. Voltage on the diode is 27 Volts.
    Ever had that situation ?

check that you have everything correctly plugged in, especially the ribbon into the amp, I have photos on my website to compare. also check you didn't damage your display or a cable. might need to start swapping parts around with known good ones to determine what main part is faulty first before wasting a lot of time diagnosing the wrong part

my HomePod has the same fault + - . But it can sometimes turn on and go through the connection, but after increasing the volume, it turns off again and again + -. And after an indefinite time it can turn on again

Sounds like the BGA or CPU/NAND itself is failing. Temperature changes can exacerbate issues with the BGA

Sadly mine boot loops for a few minutes and then starts the flashing + - buttons of death. Do you know where I can sell for parts?

Hi, I currently have a strange case here. We got a HomePod that has no bass. All components are ok, no short circuits. As always, the four capacitors were swapped. The audio amplifier was also exchanged -> no improvement.
Now I still have an old, fully functional audio board, which was removed with iOS 14.
But the board doesn't make any sound (I think the os16 on the logic board is too new and that the STM32L isn't updated by an OTA?!) It doesn't matter. ...
I then adopted the STM32L. Again sound -> but again no bass?! No bass on a board that was fully functional! Woofer of course already changed.
I then replaced the audio amplifier there (three times). after the last attempt there is bass again (but i think not as good as with the original chip).
What is much more annoying, however, is that the HomePod can be connected without any problems - but cannot get out of the "Configuring" status.

Hi there! Has your homepod gotten out of it's configuration state yet? I've seen it take up to a day or so to finish. Also curious if you replaced the bass chip with IR4312M or something else? I've been pleased with that chip in my HomePod so far, but I usually use the OEM 98-0431 chips that I got from aliexpress

@@NicsFix I used the original audio amplifier. The problem with "configuring" has now been solved. Apparently it was due to my Apple ID, after resetting end-to-end encryption and then having to reconnect all HomePods, it also worked with the repaired one.

Had one of my own also die out of nowhere :( Wish Apple would let us at least try to restore the firmware even if it isn't the issue

    • @NicsFix
      @NicsFix  Před rokem

Unfortunately the only way to "fix" it currently is swapping another logic board. No one knows of a way to restore or de-brick ones with flashing volume buttons : (

@@NicsFix What a bummer. Mine has the same issue and Apple just said they'll sell me another one, no repair option. Thinking of disassembling my HomePod to turn into a wired speaker box, but it's just a touch outside my expertise.
