When you re-listen, at a bit after two minutes, right (immediately!) after Layne (the beatboxer who is playing Jack's dog Zero with the light up nose) says "to add a little spice" Geoff has this short little run that goes pretty low.

"That guy" is Geoff Castellucci. He recently released his cover of Monster Mash but my fave is still The Headless Horseman. Save your Goosebumps for the final note - its a doozy!
p.s. Be sure to read Geoff's "side note" below the video on his channel to better understand his obvious love of all things Halloween 🎃

Geoff is really willing to see what his voice can do. He experiments with technique a lot. Check out the Q and A’s on his You Tube page.
These guys are the theater kids of acapella. Always willing to put on costumes and go all out. For a more sedate cover that is way better than the original try ‘We’re Good’

Your reaction was priceless! Welcome to the world of Voiceplay and Geoff Castellucci. They are amazing. I recommend "The Headless Horseman" and "Monster Mash" to continue the Halloween theme. Both are Geoff solos (accompanied by multiple Geoffs). For the group I suggest "Hoist the Colours", "My Mother Told Me" or "Friends On the Other Side" just to name a few.

The main singer here, Geoff, has an incredible range and also has a channel of his own where he accompanies himself, and any of his songs there is worth a listen, but I am particularly partial to "The Headless Horseman" and this is certainly the season for it.

They have such a good catalog of songs. Some non character voice songs to check out from them are
    - Halo theme song (Geoff’s lowest note to date)
    - Hoist The Colors
    - If I Were a Rich Man/Girl
    - My Mother Told Me
    - Carry On My Wayward Son
    - Queen In 5 Minutes
    - Boybands in 5 Minutes
    Halloween Songs
    - Kidnap The Sandy Claws
    - This is Halloween
    - Friends on the Other Side
    - What’s This?
    Geoff Castellucci (solo channel)
    - Monster Mash
    - Headless Horseman
    - Sixteen Tons
    - Blackbird
    - High and Dry
    - House of the Rising Sun
There’s so many more but this is already super long 😅 Really you can never go wrong with either Voiceplay or just Geoff by himself

Welcome to the rabbit hole, really enjoyed your reaction! Voiceplay lost two members in the last year and a half, one for personal reasons and one joined the Navy and will be singing with them. They have replaced one, and have featured artists joining them for now. Current lineup is Geoff Castallucci (bass), Layne Stein (beatboxer), Eli (pronounced Ell-ee) Jacobson (tenor) and Cesar de la Rosa, new kid on the block (tenor/baritone). Please watch Hoist the Colours next it is astounding. Really!

  • @bjspeck4337
    @bjspeck4337 Před 9 měsíci

Geoff does it all. His range has increased to a A0 growl in Enemy (thanks to Tim Foust teaching him a growl), to Bb5 in Peaches (a VoicePlay mini). His version of Jack's Lament is gorgeous. The guys (Eli rhymes with jelly bald tenor, Earl another high tenor, and J None, baritone) who played Lock, Shock and Barrel with those amazing character voices were crazy. Layne is the beatboxer playing Zero, the ghost dog. Geoff is the master of the subharmonic and he seldom does a growl. All of the VoicePlay members have extensive ranges and if Geoff is singing verses, any of them can fill in with the higher portion of the bass range. One of my favorites is Tennessee Whiskey, another would be Queen in 5 Minutes or Boy Bands in 5 Minutes.
Geoff, Earl and Layne (2 others were part of the original group (Scott Porter as beatboxer who left for acting career., Mykal left for Broadway)) from middle and high school with a group called 4:2:Five. When Scott left, Layne wanted the beatboxer slot - Geoff taught him what he knew and Layne ran with it. Considered now one of the best. Eli was in a nearby high school and knew them from competitions. He was in a couple of rock bands before he found a home with 4:2:Five in 2010. (Name change from that to VoicePlay was in 2012). Earl left for personal reasons in 2021. J None came on as baritone in 2018 (now recruited into the US Navy for his vocal talents. His stint is 5 yrs, he's been promoted and transferred from Seattle to Washington DC. That makes it easier to get to Orlando to do videos. He has been featured in VoicePlay's versions of Friends on the Other Side, Nothing Else Matters, Valhalla Calling, In The Air Tonight and Hellfire. His goodbye as a member was MJ's Man In The Mirror. Down 2 persons, VP auditioned folks and settled on Cesar De La Rosa with strong baritone and tenor skills. They supplement the missing slot with featured vocalists which gives them a lot of variety. VoicePlay has chosen to learn everything, from arranging, cameras, set designs, lighting, staging, costuming, makeup etc. and bypass the company management such as Sony. They do it all. The exceptions are when they need the best skills, they hire them. Ed Boyer does the final audio mix as he does for all the best acapella groups, Rick Underwood, makeup and prosthetics, and a few others. Tony Wakim (baritone until 2017? when he wanted to go into productions. He and Layne bought Pattycake Productions and many of the staging is done there, both VoicePlay and Geoff's solos.

I think that it would depend on the particular day as to whether Tim Foust from Home Free or Geoff (pronounced Jeff) Castellucci has the lowest range. Geoff uses subharmonics whereas Tim uses more of a growl technique. Tim actually worked with Geoff and Avi(former PTX bass) to extend their ranges. I believe they all 3 have 5+ octave ranges now and Chance with Home Free is somewhere in the 4+ octave range from what I've read in other comment sections. They all are crazy talented and have totally different tones and textures. I'd love to see them collaborate on something! They'd likely break CZcams! Great reaction! Welcome to 3 very addictive rabbit holes! ❤

The Trifecta of a capella...Pentatonix, Home Free and VoicePlay. Geoff, the bass, has amazing solo material too, like 16 tons, and Voiceplay has very theatrical videos like "Hoist the colors"....another rabbit hole! Another bass singer with 5+ octave range...and fun fact, they all were on the Sing Off competition. Pentatonix won Season 3, Home Free won season 4 and VoicePlay was on Season 4. Geoff is a fantastic bass singer with a very large range. I love when he goes from bass to do a 'belt for Jesus' in the higher baritone-tenor range. In their Little Mermaid Medley he does a D5 to D2 run and then drops to D1 as a subharmonic. He's been working on his chest voice and now sings most of his 1st octave notes in chest voice unless he wants the effect of a growl or other rougher note. His final note here is a sub E1.

The bass is Geoff (pronounced Jess) Castellucci. Like Tim Foust from Home Free, Geoff has a 5-octave range. And this is not fake--you can hear him do it live or listen to a live performance on You Tube. If you really want to hear them all, try "Tennessee Whiskey". The beat boxer here is Layne Stein. He sometimes sings (baritone) and the arranging for the group is split between Geoff and Layne. I think Geoff did this arrangement (although I could be wrong). The bald tenor is Eli Jacobson (his name is pronounced Ellie). The baritone is J None, though J. recently left Voice Play for the Navy. The high tenor is Earl Aikins who also recently left Voice Play. Since this video, Voice Play has added Caesar de la Rosa (who fits in really well and does a wonderful job) and they've done several covers with "features". The two Voice Play covers I'd like to see you do are "Raise the Colors" (great one for Halloween) and "Halo". You think Geoff goes low here, you won't believe where he goes in "Halo". You might want to catch some of Geoff's "solo" work--"The Headless Horseman" and "Monster Mash" fit in with Halloween. Otherwise, his cover of "Blackbird" and "Sixteen Tons" are wonderful and both really show off his 5-octave range. Is Geoff a tenor, a baritone, or a bass? Yes.

Voiceplay is AMAZING! If you check out 'This Is Halloween,' another one from 'The Nightmare Before Christmas,' and also their latest 'Hoist The Colours,' you'll see more of Eli (the bald tenor guy,) who has the most incredible, pure, strong tenor with a touch of rock/metal grit to it. The bearded guy is Earl, their high tenor - he's no longer with the group, unfortunately, having left amicably a couple of years ago, but if you check out their 'Boybands in Five Minutes,' he really shines on that one, and also in their 'Queen in Five Minutes.' And the black guy is J.None, who also left amicably just recently, but he's now beem replaced by Cesar, who shines in 'Hoist The Colours.'

Geoff is deliberately voice acting to simulate the original Oogie Boogie. His voice is so versatile that it will often sound completely different depending upon the style of the song. I think you'll also find that compared to the other acapella groups, VoicePlay tends to be a little more Broadway/theatrical in their style, with a large emphasis on Disney songs.

Their new cover of the music from the video game 'Halo' is their most recent, and is jaw dropping good... please watch it all the way through the commentary. They did Queen in five minutes, and if you are going to cover Queen... well, you had better be on top of your game (they are!), other fun songs that will surprise you with what you can do with your voice is Geoff's covers of 'Blackbird' 'Sixteen Tons' and 'Misty Mountains Cold'... if you love seeing an amazing Bass singer, his work is as good as anyone in the world. For a more prominent part by Eli (pronounced 'ellie'), check out their cover of _My Mother Told Me,_ that Viking/shanty-ish song you might recognize from the Vikings show on History Channel, and also AC Valhalla. They really do the odd key-change from that composition justice (watch the original on YT before their cover to get a feel for it, people have it in many videos), and Eli gets to do his 'rock lead singer' range thing. It's also got some great beat-boxing by Layne Stein (here with the glowing nose).
Another VoicePlay cover that shares spotlight with other members more than this one is _The Little Mermaid - MEDLEY (feat. Rachel Potter)._
VoicePlay has had members come and go over the years, come back for one or more performances, plus guests who come back here and there but weren't officially with the band. I'll leave you to google or wiki to track it, as it's more lengthy than a comment here can do justice to.

Yeah, the costumes and sets and whatnot -- the theatrics, if you will -- are this group's main stand-out point.
There's also Voctave, which I think is a somewhat larger group.
Oh, and there's a video out there somewhere that strings together clips from Pentatonix, Home Free, Voiceplay, and maybe a couple of others, showing off the lowest bass note in each song, arranged in order by note value getting lower and lower as it goes. So if you just like hearing low bass notes, maybe look that one up.

You defenetly must react to Tim Foust and Austin Brown
in a backyard session, with '' Sweet Maria''
Tim is the best bass, but what he does here is amazing!!!

Check out Far Over the Misty Mountain Cold by Geoff Castellucci and Misty Mountains by Peter Hollens feat. Tim Foust. Geoff and Tim are the bass voices for VoicePlay and Home Free respectively and these are the same song (from a Hobbit movie). You can hear their vocal ranges here, especially their last note. They both have a 5 octave range. Talk about getting goose bumps!. As to blowing out speakers, check out the half-hour long concert footage titles Home Free Concert Morrison, IL 8/19/15. Tim get admonished for encroaching on the tenors' territory and goes super bass. I never get tired of watching that.

As others have said check out Geoff's Monster Mash - his speaking voice and high harmonies will answer all your questions. For the other guys in this video check out Queen in 5 minutes, or their two-part Panic at the Disco.
Some members have changed, so also check out "If I were a Rich Man/Girl" for current members

  • @cyndisanimaladventures6370

They have also covered What's This?, Kidnap the Sandy Claws, and This is Halloween from Nightmare Before Christmas also and they are all great. Geoff Castellucci (the bass) also has his own channel and just put out Monster Mash for Halloween. VoicePlay has released several videos in the last few months including Hoist the Colours, the Halo Theme Song, and My Mother Told Me. Their Halloween one this year is I've Got Friends On the Other Side from Disney's The Princess and the Frog.
Honestly I don't think I have found anything from them that wasn't good. They are the theater kids of acapella groups. They go all out with costumes and everything.

Geoff (pronounced Jeff) Castelucci is a basso profundo and has his own channel. He has fabulous covers and records several of himself to accompany himself. Check his Monster Mash and The Headless Horseman (for Halloween theme), Sixteen Tons, Far Over Misty Mountains Gold, and those will lead you to more.

Thank you for reacting to this. Geoff Castellucci has begun doing solo work. When he does, he usually harmonizes with himself. There are so many great examples of his singing. If you want to stay with Halloween check out "Monster Mash" czcams.com/video/12Sg9efb0hc/video.html But he also has other songs that are not holiday related. Oh yay! Glad to see you doing a reaction to this one. Geoff really slays this one. He’s the main guy. He has a sick range...he goes super low and way up as well. He has a solo channel that showcases what he can do too.
I recommend checking out their cover of Hoist The Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean next. It’s insanely good. The vocals, the production, the lighting, the creep factor.... You’ll dig it. 😊

The incredible thing about Geoff isn’t necessarily his range. It’s his tone and control throughout that range.
And the incredible thing about VoicePlay is that Geoff isn’t necessarily their best performer. Queen in 5 minutes is a good chance to see them all shine, including a small sample of Layne’s solo vocal percussion.
And unlike the more commercial acapella groups, VoicePlay (and Geoff on his own channel) has the talent to do most everything themselves. One person (usually Geoff or Layne, but sometimes Eli) will do the arrangement, setup and direct the shoot, and do most of the post-production editing. On some videos they use a cameraman and/or makeup artist, but often do those things themselves too. Eli does a lot of the lighting, and sometimes the backgrounds (like for My Mother Told Me. ). You can always see the details in the description of the video, as well as occasional funny thoughts about the production. They are an amazingly talented group.
I liked your reaction. I subscribed to see more.

Regarding Geoff and his bass notes, he can do chest notes that other bass singers have to growl. He is almost always harmonically appropriate. I believe he can do 5 octaves easily, and can stretch the top end a bit from that.

#TheatreKidsOfACappella. Love this group along with Home Free. They have done quite a few Disney covers. If you like this they also did Kidnap the Sandy Claws and This is Halloween. Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci the bass has range he has hit B0 up to A5. The Sandy Claws was Geoff's brother-in-law. Geoff has his own channel of Low Bass covers.
