- Recently I purchased a used Grasshopper 322D Zero Turn Lawn Mower for my new lawn care business. I found some starting and charging issues I needed to address.

This was a pretty lengthy project but overall very easy. During the off season I wanted to take the time to rule out any issues. The previous owner performed some less than ideal tactics with regards to repairs. I found solid strand wire (house electrical) and a Hella Off Road Light relay where the starter relay was supposed to go. I had suspicions that the 'new alternator' was not charging. The battery was also brand new as well. I riped out all the shady wiring and found that most the oem wiring was in tact and still in very good condition. I replaced a few fuses that had signs of corrosion and voltage loss. Then I started testing and repairing the real problem that led to these less than ideal repairs. It was an easy fix. With a test light and a multi meter I was able to determine that I needed a new starter relay and a couple of fuses. I purchases a non-OEM relay from a local auto parts store. I just asked for a 30 Amp Starter Relay. It was about $15-20. It worked perfect. I could have ordered one from Amazon that was OEM but this was I was able to finish the project without waiting for shipping.

Great example on how to trouble shoot. Thanks
Very helpful, I have the same problem with the relays on my grasshopper. I ordered, some from amazon, waiting to install.
Did it work?
I own a grasshopper that only I have services. Both relays are Hella. Good
test procedures.
Nice mower. Nice repair
Nice video ty.....I have a Model 1212 what a pain to change the starter. Have to remove the gas tank first ugh.
Nice fix
Thanks!
Grasshopper has a real issue with the fuse block. For me I wound up cutting the wires for the Alt fuse and wiring in a circuit breaker. Ed
Is there a CDI Box hidden in there?
Dude, we are twins! Not only own grasshopper mowers with issues, but my employees pointed out how much we look alike!...
Our 300 series was a lemon. The Kohler engine was awful. No one could figure out the issue. After 15 times In shop,, Kohler sent a person to rebuild from ground up due to no new replacement engines available in North America. Live and learn. No Kohler no grasshopper again. They both blamed one another and left us hanging all season.
Ha ha! Nice! The diesel has served us well.
My grasshopper is nothing but a headache, got delivered with it starting and going very quickly backwards. Very dangerous to run and pull out the shop. Called my dealer and he closed down. Called Grasshooper and they sent me to. A chicken farmer who told me he knew nothing about this machine and never worked on a diesel. Went from setting in another shop for two months trying to figure why all the pulleys are out of line burning up belt’s problem from factory machine pulleys wrong. Now drive motor on left side doesn’t pull going up hill while right tire spins. My old 700 series was fantastic my 900 used only on my yard keeps breaking and had 200 hours on it, while we mow with 30 year old machines and 60. If you buy a Grasshopper have a good backup mower!
What year mower? Mine is a 2005 and hasn’t given me too many fits aside from age related maintenance.
If they use "cold rolled" steel washers, they will wear down pretty quick and your pullies will become out of line in on time.
I have a Grasshopper 930D and after about 15 minutes it blows the 15 amp Main fuse. I am at My witts end trying to figure it out.
My first go to is to clean connections for corrosion. I’m not an electrical expert but you might be able to find a wiring diagram to see what that fuse connects to and trace the wires for a short somewhere. Definitely a small short if it takes 15 minutes to blow the fuse.
