I've practiced Aikido for a couple of year, I've worked as a security guard and i have to say I am pleased how handy it has been. The less brutal force really comes in handy when you only want to subdue an opponent with minimal force. This drastically minimizes courtruns as well.

I've used Aikido a few times in real life and it's surprising the non-fighting situations it comes in handy. Few months ago I used an iriminage on a kid while roller skating. At high speed this kid turned straight at me and collided with me. Kid was heading for a concussion so I used an iriminage move to safely take him to the ground. The way I do that move I can actually get under the head and back to protect their landing. Then helped the kid up and sent him on his way... in the correct direction ;)

They often said that Aikido is more the soft one, but that depends on the one who using it against a opponent. You can easily pop off the shoulder or the arms of your opponent if you use a little bit more force and momentum, some older Akikdokas used also punches to distract the opponent before throwing or moving him to the ground.

I was more impressed with Aikido, honestly. I keep hearing all the time how "useless" it is, but it seems really graceful and defended against all types of attack very elegantly, without risking injury for both people. I am impressed. In a streetfight, you don't need to kill your opponent, just put him out of the way in order to not be a threat. Seems aikido is fine, perhaps people in MMA underrate it because they need to submit/KO people more.

@@jantothorti8012 I'm just one data point, but in real life, I really think applying _some_ Aikido against a somewhat drunk and very angry opponent helped me injure them less than I otherwise would have, but we "danced" for close to an hour until police arrived. I would've ran away as soon as I had him tumbling, but I was protecting someone with much shorter legs, I believe Aikido focus on redirection was also useful in "guiding" the aggressor away from a vulnerable target. That said I would not recommend _relying_ on a single style (especially an _art_ focused one) and I still believe that the best fight is a fight that didn't happen, my Sensei was very sure to drill that in.

    • @a-blivvy-yus

@@vipr1142 Aikido has better control of distance and posiioning though. Getting the opponent into a position where they can't attack you immediately can give you an opening to get out of the situation. Combine with parkour for added "get out of the fight" potential. I took a self defense class a while back, as in nearly a decade ago. The teachers (One, an eight dan black belt of aikido, the other, merely a single dan in judo) taught us quite a few aikido moves to break grapples and turn an idiot's weapon against themselves, mixed in with some judo grabs and throws for the ones that just tried to hit us directly. The moves taken from aikido were very fluid and easy to do, and I remember one of the techniques about an overhead swing with something like a bottle where the teacher told us to walk forward at the end to avoid hurting our sparring partner, 'because in this position you can destroy the whole arm by swinging it like a sword with all your might, since they can't do the flip to avoid it. Do that in a real fight on concrete, not here.' He also advised kicking the threat in the groin once you've grabbed them and have full control over their movements, if only to make them pause so you can really put the screws in, or just applying pressure once they're falling so they can't avoid breaking their bones when they hit the ground.
Given it was a self-defense course, that wasn't the only set of encouragements to fight dirty. The one with the black belt in judo encouraged kicking downed people after a good throw so they wouldn't get back up, not holding back while throwing/folding fools, and taking the enemies weapon and hitting them with it before they can recover.
    Good times.

Having been exposed to both Karate and Aikido, that was actually a lot of fun! And if you're paying attention, you'll notice a LOT of overlap and shared physics. Historically, both Japanese Karate and Aikido have classical Japanese Jujitsu and Aki-jujitsu in their DNA. These are the guys who had to defend versus competent chaps with four foot razor blades, so they figured a few things out that worked, and lived to pass them on.

If you look closely, you will see that all of karate's defence involve some sort of counter attack with punches and kicks. But aikido's responses are completely focused on subduing the opponent. It seems that aikido has special emphasis on overcoming the attacker without harming him, which I think is absolutely amazing.

It's like disarming an opponent and after the surprise to say to him to chill. If however in aikido you apply the technique violently, you will cause serious harm slamming the attacker to the ground and breaking wrists and joints.... but that is not the aim of aikido.

But you can say this for every martial art, even boxing. A "generic schoolyard bully" usually has no (or very little) idea of footwork and can be outmanouvered quite quickly.
But it is quite another situation if there is a streetfight between a master of Karate and Aikido - although the sight of a those two fighting against each other in a bar brawl or street fight should be highly unusual. Nearest would be something like MMA, where praticers of pure Aikido (without being proficient in at least one other martial art) lose way more often than they win.

Important point to consider is that the line of attack is only straight ahead at your attacker when he's using straight attacks: the haymaker, to use an example in the video, is coming in at a strong angle, so moving directly toward the attacker turns it into a hug...pretty much the last thing most people throwing a haymaker want to do to you, and a nice setup for any number of judo throws.

Since you threw in the counters and took longer to take the opponent down, I give it to Aikido for simple, straightforward and effective moves, sorry Jesse. That was awesome Jesse! I'm still laughing about the "my whole life flashed before my eyes" segments. The moral of the story is you should learn aikido, karate, and MMA to make sure all your bases are covered.

I think Aikido was much more of distance and not over the edge movements in terms of physical strength power and striking Karate takes the cake for it but Aikido revolves around quick but relaxing movements to disarm your opponent without injuring them unless you need to if you were to ask which would win in a fight itself it really just depends on the opponent

The elegance of Aikido vs the power and precision of Karate! Both are awesome in their own way, and I think both complement each other.

I have been doing martial arts for a significant part of my childhood, and I feel both techniques really showed how both styles are effective, but I feel karate just shows more tenacity and technique. It also balances your morals, as you learn when and when to not finish or actually hurt someone

I love it. Both won. The reason is that both respected the philosophy of their martial arts. The aim of Aikido is to protect the attacker. So the attacker understand that violence is not good. The Karateka was in the philosophy of street self defense. It's you or the opponent. In a real life situation you won't have pity against your opponent who attacks you. So karate has an upper hand that karate strikes the guy won't come back to attack you. I practice karate shotokan I kick hard and punch hard to hurt if I am being attack in the street but aikido is good if it's your drunk friend, angry brother or young people that you don't want to hurt but want to pass a message. Steven Seagal philosophy is breaking limbs while being attack but it's true that true philosophy of martial arts is to protect others.

Hey Jessie - another great video, thank you. I just love how not only is there a good dose of modesty, but also a great sense of humour. No one taking themselves too seriously. That is just so refreshing! Keep up the good work!

My friend did both Shotokan Karate and Yoshinkan Aikido. Best combine the 2... The locks in Aikido are so painful that you give up psychologically before you do so physically. With Karate a good yoko geri to the ribs or the knees that is the end of you. In a few fights I had on the street, I always used strikes. When there are multiple opponents it is very hard to grab someone. Constantly move and strike. I heard in the past, 2 Jujitsu masters were attacked by 50 robbers and they defeated them all. It is said that they got a new appreciation of atemi waza.

@@jestfullgremblim8002 So says the story. I recently got someone to buy me the book where I believed I originally read that story. If it is the correct one I'll put his name here. form what I remember the Japanese term they used for him was like a martial arts "god" and that he was quite strong. There is such a term but I can't remember off the top of my head.

Both arts are very impressive, however, as a man in my late 50's with less strenght I would be inclined to favor aikido using the attacker's momentum against him rather then striking back forcefully.

I'm in my late 50s too and wishing to return to martial arts after a long hiatus. I have trained in Tae kwon do (black belt), Wing Chun, Boxing, Judo and Aikido and trying to decide what to do. When I was young man I thoroughly enjoyed the sheer physciality of hard style martial arts like my Judo and TKD but I don't think my body could take it these days. One thing I have noticed is that as you get older, injuries take a lot longer to heal, if at all. I remember a time when I could go all out when I competed and not get hurt. Sure I did injured sometimes but I recovered very quickly. After a lifetime of practice I have many old injuries like compressed vertebra, fractures, and ligament tears (such as rotator cuff) and really don't want to inflame them again. I pulled a tendon in my lower leg from running a couple of years ago and it took over 6 months to heal. But I really miss my martial arts - I feel so alive and happy whenever I am in the dojo.

You can do both ya know (wing Chun jeet kune do , Kali , silat all use the attackers energy against them to enhance your own counter strike , it's not always finesse or power , a lot of the best fighting arts use both just fyi
