    • @the1andonlySherlock
      @the1andonlySherlock Před 3 lety +6

      @@Bagginsess titanium is not lighter AND stronger than steel. Titanium alloys can have a higher *specific* strength than many steels, however the actual strength itself is usually higher for steels(obviously depending on alloy and heat treatment). Plus, titanium alloys generally have poor impact properties and low hardness compared to steels, making them less than ideal for armor.

    Even if the body armor catches all the rounds what damage would the shock wave from the impact of the bullets on the armor do to the human body? Would damage to the human body kill the person?

    • @ZASurvivalist
      @ZASurvivalist Před 4 lety +2

      Jack Brown none. The most dangerous part is the spawling. Now perhaps shotgun slugs may be a different story.. but the transferable, internalized concussive force against AR500 and AR550 armor on the human body using intermediate rounds, even in the same spot wont transfer shockwaves into the body.
      “Maybe” if it was directly on the heart.. but you’f have to literally get hit in that same spot over and over and over for it to cause internal damage or get hit with a big ass slug or round such as 308 or 3006 . Id assume large calibers would be another story.. but your question of multiple intermediate rounds was the focus.
      That being said, after 1-3 shots, armor wearing people will get off the X and scoot elsewhere. So a continuous string of hits doesn’t really make sense.

      There is but I haven't seen a single american armor manufacturer do this...which gives me a VERY sneaking suspicion since they actually do bother to use this method on ceramic plates, but never steel, seems intentional. The nylon wrap around ceramic also needs to be applied to the steel with the coating already on it, this will keep that coating on it and will only maybe loose small bits of the coat now and then. Only country I know that uses this method on steel is South-Africa, but rubber foam instead of the plain rubber coating

      @@thisisyourcaptin ,after Korea the military recognized how effective the -06 was against Chinese soldiers (like German and Italian before) but wanted a round that worked in a shorter action and wanted the general soldier to carry more rounds into combat b/c of changing battlefield techniques. The .308 (7.62x51) was born. The two are basicly brothers. Then going into Vietnam the 5.56 became the darling of the pentagon. But, the 7.62 family still sees action around the world.
      The -06 after WWI and again after WWII and then after Korea saw a surge in the civilian markets as guys were coming home and wanted hunting rifles in a caliber they knew. From a ballistic standpoint there is no game in North America that the -06 can not take and is still taking. You can buy saboted rounds to ultra light grain rounds to 200+gr rounds currently for the venerable .30-06 today. Oh and you can buy surplus AP rounds that put perfect holes in steel.
      As for recoil...my 128lb, 70 year old mother uses a cut down stocked remington 700BDL in -06 as her go to hunting rifle year in and year out for the last 45yrs.

    Ok, I found this video after looking at Caliber's web site (no mailing list either?) I think you where confused speaking about the ar500 & ar550 that most stayed away because its to brittle , you surely most have meant ar650.
    To me and what I saw in the video this Caliber armor "Failed" not because of the metal but rather the poor or lack of a bond of the anti-spawl resin to metal plate , as you can see every time the entire anti-spawl layer pealed off as a whole and not just the effected area, this could also be caused by the preparation of metal prior to applying the resin anti-spawl IMHO. I did find the extra curvature interesting (I assume it mite be more comfortable then other brands) particularly if someone isn't running side plates but that swimmers cut plus the curves you'd have to find or have made a custom plate carrier. If the Manufacturer Caliber Armor could fix this anti-spawl bonding issue it mite be worth looking at again.
    While this video shows you put allot of rounds downrange , I have to agree with the other posters comments that this test was of smaller caliber and short slow barrels. Yes, there are a lot of pistols & 223/556, 762/308 around BUT there are lots of very common real guns out there also of larger caliber (including your "fudd" 30-06 and others). This video was defiantly meant to favor the manufacturer for demo video but a better advertisement is a manufacturer willing to show their plates being hit by larger then rated ammo to show the failing points , back deformation, edge failures, an anti spawl control , as a buyer that is something I always look for since I want to know how far I can push the rig when needed.
    Don't get me wrong I appreciate anyone willing to test products and share those videos for public to view, so thank you for posting the video and the manufacture Caliber armor for supplying you the plates to test.

    Why do youtubers say spalling when they mean deflection??? Spalling is when the back of the target becomes frag. Like when you blow a small hole in concrete but the backside blows out in a cone shape. That's spalling.

    • @VSO_Gun_Channel
      @VSO_Gun_Channel  Před 4 lety +4

      Look up the definition of the word spall.
      It means to break up into smaller pieces. When a round is defeated by Steel it shatters and blasts out in a cone. The coatings are also usually called antispall by the manufacturer
