    The next time you do this try if you didn't take the trans cross member out then jack the back of the car as high as you can put jack stands under the axel it makes taking and putting the engine in or out much faster like 10 min or less .

    You know, whenever I need a hand from one of my "buddies" to do this kind of work, I can never get them to answer the phone. Oh, but when they need their car or truck fixed and have no money, my phone rings off the hook.

    Great job. I’d suggest not wearing flip flops when doing this. I’ve injured my feet before and now always wear protective feet wear

    Nice work I'm getting ready to drop 350 in my 91 caprice taken the lt1 out.. I think it better to pull the engine with the transmission still attached. Less work to do

    another option is to run a hydroboost brake booster.
    If your keeping disc/drum brakes just get a manual master cylinder for a car w manual brakes and relocating the master cylinder pushrod pin in the brake pedal about 1" higher up the pedal for more leverage. some of the older brake pedals already have the hole.
    You can also upgrade to 12" disc on the front and 11"x2" drums (police option=truck brakes) on the rear using factory parts. stock common rear drums are 9.5" diameter

    I had a 454 with a 4 speed in a 71 firebird with a 2.73 rearend>
    I was getting maybe 15 mpg out of it and it would still go pretty hard the highway gears were not an impediment>
    That 2.73 rear axle is actually the stock rear end I salvaged out of a 1981 trans am that had 4 wheel disc brakes, 4 speed, and a 305.
    If you are running a big ass cam in your 454 with low vacuum the best fix for low vacuum is manual brakes. I setup the firebird with 4 wheel manual disc it would stop on a dime.

    if the transmission oil not old keep it and use it in the future, i changed my car's transmission oil myself and it took 9 liters of oil in it, coast me $90, hidden expense. transmission oil is expensive.

      Brandon McClain do you need to remove the transmission too? to remove the engine you will need to remove the bolts from transmission bell housing, torque converter bolts, remove the fuel lines on pump, coolant hoses electrical, and motor mounts. you should get another person to help with the engine hoist and go slow

    @stephen65la Im going to assume its very hard, My Sister has an 85 4.3 Fuel Injection, and im assuming the Engine Mounts are diff. than a 350 plus ur gana have to change teh fuel system as is not gana be for a V-6 but a V-8 and anything else might change.

    nice job. I have a 305 v8 with 700R Trans in my 68 camaro since 1986. Trans leaks through rear seal from sitting too long in dry CA for extended periods between running. So my trans is caked too. Want to swap for a 350 with Turbo Trans.Any suggestions on what to cleaner spray on it before pulling it out?

  • @lostbuffalo
    @lostbuffalo Před 12 lety +1

    I say roll the car back if you can.. and your work area is flat...
    it's easier and more stable then rolling the hoist. sometimes the hoist wants to tip with the engine all the way up

  • @bottmar1
    @bottmar1 Před 8 lety +1

    Why yank the transmission with the engine? You would not have to remove the driveshaft, speedo cable, wiring, shift linkage and rear crossmember if you separated the engine from the trans. at the bell housing which you will no doubt be doing anyway. Also the motor will have less angle required and you have no trans. oil running out the back. When it comes to engine installation you will be able to set the engine in place without even getting beneath to guide that stupid trans. extension housing over the rear crossmember. Chevy is pretty much the easiest one to slip an engine into a car with the trans. left in. Just saying. (46 years)

      Right on ‼️ Pulling my Chevy 350 now out Fo a 1980 Trans Am & I separated the engine from trans. I had all the torque converter bolts and bel housing bolts out in less than 15 min 👍🏼much less hassle.

      I have a 75 El Camino 350, need to replace all gaskets on motor. I'm doing Alone. I have all but the two bolts on top of the bell housing, do I take the bolts off that are holding the fly wheel and torque converter together before I start lifting the motor out? Also do I need to have the rear end jacked up ? I just want to be on the safe side. Advice please sir!? First timer.

    Geez. 9mins to take out an engine. Bloody yanks. lol. Nice work though. Your ute looks very similar to our aussie utes of the same age. 350's, 327's and 307's also bolt into our utes. Check out my engine tutorial for a comparison. Cheers guys!
