Great to hear some behind the scenes of a model being developed! If your allowed, it would be great to hear how designing an 18+ set is different from designing a playset...
What an impressive first upload!! You'll be great on CZcams I'm sure! :)
This is so insightful!! Can’t wait to see more videos about the entire process, and thanks for sharing this!
This was so cool to hear about the behind the scenes design process! I loved all of the insights. I’m really excited to see more from you and this series. Thank you!
You did amazing job on that set! Its one that really screams first days adventure!
Also LOVE the tree hides the items. We need more brave and creative minds like you in Lego!
You did a fantastic job! And you captured the heart of Animal Crossing in a 20 dollar set. This is probably my favorite of the AC wave! :)
I'm blushing... Thank you!
Just bought this one to flesh out my brick village thank you for your work
So interesting to see how this went from specs to final set!
Obviously wanna hear about the Polaroid set 😎
I’d love to hear about the constraints of designing magazine promos.
Just wow very wow incredible and amazing too 🐰🦊🐯🐱💕
I bought this set today! It's sooooo cute!! You did an amazing job!! Love it 😊
So cool hearing the reasoning behind the builds and features. I so enjoy these kinds of videos and exploring the stories behind the sets.
This is so insightful, love to hear about this process! Looking forward to more!!
This is shaping up to be a great series! I really loved all the sets you designed, and while it'll be a shame to see you go, I'm really excited to see all your new videos on this channel! :)
It's so interesting to hear about all of the different requirements that a set needs. We often here about the price point being set and a model being deisgned around that, but I had no clue things like characters, age range or even needing to have a focal point where pre set. I'd love to learn more about your time with LEGO Ideas and the Polaroid and Hocus Pocus house since we often here about the fan desigenrs experience, but I'd love to know what it's like for the LEGO designer since it's collaborative in a VERY different way. And with Hocus Pocus being invloved with Disney, how the IP could also restrict or effect what is included
I’m curious about the LEGO side of the Ideas process as well
Going by the comments it looks like the Polaroid camera will be the next video :)
Fantastic video! I was a toy designer for 22 years before Covid Hit the scene. Now I’m a Master Builder at LLNY. 👍
That's so cool! I'll look out for your stuff if I'm ever in NY :D
Thanks so much for explaining what goes into the design process for a set.
This is my favorite of the wave. The affordable price and the look. It’s great.
I just build this set and love it!!! Cant wait to make an island❤
Welome to CZcams ❤ looking forward to watch more
Welcome to CZcams, James !
Very much looking forward to your videos :D
Fantastic work on the set and you did a great job breaking down the steps and thought process behind the design. Depending on how often you can create videos, it makes sense to share recently released sets to catch the hype as you mentioned, and in between then try to cover your older models first since you’ll always have extra hindsight to evaluate your process. I hope this helps and I’m keen to see your video on the Typewriter- I got to glimpse your progress while I was in IH and it was fascinating to see the prototypes you came up with alongside Wes!
Awesome video!
Well done in this first video!! It was great getting your perspective on the design. Looking forward to more in the future :)
Always love hearing about the LEGO design process. Would love to see more. Maybe the Super Robot next?
I hope to become a designer for LEGO myself one day so this was awesome to see! 😁
Love your energy, Im glad I could see the designer behind this set;)) I hope that animal crossing will stay for some while, and don't end up like overwatch with 1,5 waves...
In future if you'll work on more Animal crossing sets, can you choose which Villager will be in the set or thats someone else job? I would love to see Rudy from AC in Lego form :>
Nothing but respect for Lego
Don't have anything bad to say
Admirable company all round
As they say, det bedste er ikke for godt.
I ordered this set because I liked the look of it with the cute waterfall. Really happy to watch a design process video of the lego I bought. Cant wait to get jt and build it, looks fun! 😊
This is my favourite from the smaller Animal Crossing sets. I have it ordered and I can't wait for it to arrive
Fascinating! So cool to have an insight into the process and challenges 👏🏻
This is fascinating love to hear more behind the scenes. Whatever elements of the process than can be shared would be great. From concept to final model and deconstructing for the instructions. A step by step of the process would be awesome
This was such a fun insightful watch!
I got and built the Julian birthday party set, and I was wondering “why’s there this open space with a twig inside of the cherry blossom tree?”
And it’s so cool to actually learn the origin of where that design feature came from!
Thanks for making this video!
Great start into your CZcams journey! I loved to get some insights into the thought process behind set design and your engaging delivery! I've never played Animal Crossing, but I'm tempted to get some of the sets just for the fun minifigures.
I love the insight. Thank you!
It's awesome to hear the design process and how other themes and your personal experiences with the franchise was all poured into a fun set! Really awesome to watch mate and cannot wait for more videos about the other sets you worked on! Awesome shelf and backdrop by the way ❤, as a Japan lover myself it's awesome to hear about a fellow lover of the country!!
Its not a backdrop I just live like this... :')
Awesome work and super interesting to hear you talk through your process. Looking forward to your next videos. :)
Super fun video, great start to the channel! Loved the energy all the way through and I really enjoy how engaging it was throughout. Subscribed and looking forward to more!
Great insights, looking forward to the next episodes
Great to see you here James! The series is going to be great, and really insightful for all of us budding wannabe LEGO designers!
I'd love to see a video on 31124 Super Robot you designed with George, and also 21327 Typewriter with Wes.
I was super impressed that the Typewriter essentially works on a clock mechanism, and Super Robot is just one of my all-time favourites now!
Oh and don't miss a video for 60395 Combo Race Pack. You only got to do a couple of vehicles and the Combo Race Pack is very different from your other models, so it'd be great to hear your thoughts on that too!

🖤💙💜💙🖤
Great stuff! Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Seeing a fellow mechanical engineer working for LEGO makes me so happy :) Would love a video on the Polaroid haha 😁
Wow, What a cool build.
Welcome to CZcams! Looking forward to your behind the scenes insights. Can you make a video or two explaining how the budget for new set gets decided, and what factors /constraints designers have to work under when determining whether to include new parts/recolours/new prints in a set. Thank you in advance, and good luck!
Do you know why they decided not to include a player character? (at least for now) Was it because they would need a new head mold and a few diverse options, and they wanted to save new molds/colours for the cute animals?
I’m a huge fan of all the sets you’ve designed. Will we ever know the actual reason why you left Lego? And if so, could you make a video on it?
Great to hear, as a fellow graphic designer, about your though progresses on the design for the LEGO set.
Congrats on designing my favorite set of the line!
I bought this set at 8 am on release day, I can’t wait to build it!
I have a very specific question. It's a minor detail, but it made me curious nonetheless.
How come the cherry tree in Bunnie's Outdoor Activities is the only tree that uses a 2x2 jumper tile instead of the usual regular 2x2 plate? That kind of plate isn't used anywhere else in that set, so it's not a case of keeping the part list short. Was there just a big vat of those pieces in Lego's warehouse that needed to be gotten rid of or something?
A very good question! Ill put that in the upcoming Q&A vid, but short answer, building experience.
I just got the set and was about to ask the same thing!
Interesting stuff, looking forward to future videos! I am a huge fan of animal moulds so hopefully you make a video one day about why they are so expensive and why it's so hard for designers to include them in sets :)
Thank you for sharing! I’m gonna check out your channel to watch more videos, specifically I want to see if you have a video about how to get your job. What a cool, creative career!
Well done. I am almost 40 yo, never played AC and i want this set now :)
Thanks! AC is mainly about paying off the mortgage so it's perfect for almost 40 year olds 😆
@@Tubeside haha, that's right :) If that's not a secret - how's that possible that all pieces are printed, not stickers, unique molds for their heads and the price is not crazy high. Why cannot we have it in 18+ premium sets that often rely heavily on stickers?
@@greymanpl That is a good question. If you're willing to wait, my plan is to collect a few of these for a Q&A video and I'll answer it then ;)
great insight on the thought prcoesses that goes into designing an official lego set. 👍👍
i vote the BTS set for your next video.
BTS is on a hiatus while the members are doing their conscription service, and as a BTS fan, the lack of BTS content now is 😭
That's really funny because i played Animal Crossing (New Leaf mostly) BECAUSE it reminded me so much of Fabuland.
The cycle is complete.
So bittersweet hearing about some of your latest amazing design work alongside the news that it'll be among the last sets you designed as part of the company...
Regardless, loved the video! Fun style, great insights. As for what I'd like to see next from you... I recently built the Polaroid set with my dad, and would love if you could share more about how that model came together!
Thank you!! Hey, it means you can get a "complete set" of James May models haha.
Can you do a video about pricing? Some sets have each piece cost over 10 cents, but some like the Creator 3in1 are much cheaper. Any generic info you can share would be nice.
I'll add this to the Q&A video I'm planning :)
I love this video! Did you know what the Bunnie figure and the various printed pieces looked like before going in? Are the figures considered in the overall visual design of the set? e.g. green build with red figure as a "focal point" as you say. Did you have any say in its design as to improve 'synchronicity' with the build? I imagine Nintendo has strict design guidelines but she wears different outfits in the game. Also did(/would) lego buy animal crossing for you in order for you to do research?
Ill add these to the upcoming Q&A video :)
Awesome to know more BTS
I would like to know the BTS of the polaroid, typewriter, and Andreas theater art school
You and Tiago should collab
You want to know more about 21339 LEGO Ideas BTS Dynamite? Okay! 😘🫰
@@Tubeside BTS meaning behind the scenes lol
Surprise twist - the focal point is a marshmallow 😂
This is such a great insight as someone who designs custom LEGO sets in their spare time, thanks for sharing.
I noticed you used Mecabricks several times during this video - is Mecabricks ever utilized over there at the company during the design process?
Adding this question for my Q&A video ;)
Yeah, I'll second that question... Which programs are used? Is it studio?
Subscribed. Please don't lose your identity and become another LAN member doing only reviews and press releases for Lego
Would love to hear about the hocus pocus set.
How did the Lego team decide which characters to bring into Lego form?
Adding this to my Q&A vid ;)
@@Tubeside Can't wait to see the Q&A video. I really want to know how out of the hundreds of villagers, the team chose who we ended up getting in the sets. I am really pleased with how the sets turned out. The team did a good job getting the look and feel of the game. Hopefully we get more sets in the future.
Good luck on YT🍀. I can see reflection of ilumination lamps in you're glasses and it's kinda disturbing...
I want to hear why you would quit such an awesome job!? If it’s not too personal that is
I have a build idea, but I need assistance. Can you design a replica life size men's LEGO athletic cup that goes in an athletic supporter/jockstrap? They're also called a box or abdo guard for cricket in the UK. This is actually a serious request. I've gotten back into LEGO as an adult, but I need instructions or a design to build something due to some disabilities. Thanks for any help.
The ring light reflection in your glasses you look like evil scientist
Someone said the Mysterons from Captain Scarlet.... Once I get better equipment hopfully that fixes it. 😅
Shame the animal crossing sets are so small though
vert ciik
Fun Fact: I thought you might be the person from Top Gear because he once built a house out of LEGO.
Did you not watch the video?? I said NOT that James May... :P
20$ 😂
Great Video, awesome channel, instant subscribe! Can't wait to see more of the inside mind of designers.
I do have a question (or 2-3 related ones) I've been keen on getting an answer to. How much expense do prints vs. stickers incur (and how / why this happens) - and what exactly is the lego policy on using prints vs stickers? I really hope you can at least clarify some of my confusion that I am expanding on below. I am not asking this as an angry customer even if I do get a bit rambley (I love all these sets and would have loved to see a great lego set be perfect - or at least as perfect one can make them). I would just want to know the why behind this occurrence.
I've been confused of late - they released so many GREAT prints in the 2024 space line with great prices (small cheap and great sets) - I love those- , as far as I know the animal crossing has full prints - and the prices aren't really bad either, they started adding prints in small harry potter sets that don't seem to be reusable (the name list in the boat set), the Eldorado remake had no stickers (thank god), same with the awesome Galaxy Explorer, the Viking village had a lot of great prints - love those but they don't seem that LEGO intends on reusing them. Now to the other side of the coin : my biggest annoyance is the medieval town square 10332 - it is a huge / expensive set, made for adults that (as far as I could tell) would prefer to have prints instead of stickers, and has 10+ stickers (not that I mind the easter eggs being stickers, another youtuber already made it clear that those would have never been produced as prints as they are to narrow in applicability). My issue here is the really versatile stickers that could have been prints, sold at a premium on PAB and reused in everything for 10 years or more going forward, from modular buildings to random castle / pirates sets and even city / friends sets. The shop signs could have been endlessly used everywhere - they look fancy, but not exclusively medieval, the 3 envelopes with different wax seals - dragon, lion, falcon could again be used to spice up every set that uses those details from harry potter to random pile of documents in a museum, the wooden window shutters - they actually have a print for them in the snow white house and a nice printed pink tile from the wish sets that could have been recolored in brown. Another curiosity I found were the hazard stripes on the lego space sets from this year. All the 2x1 or 2x3 hazard tiles are stickered instead of printed, even the yellow one in set 60428: Space Construction Mech - and this one is actually an existing color / print combination, so why would they not print these tiles since they are generally useful and they already have 2x1 and 4x1 tiles printed (yellow, azure, so on)?
I am sorry for the long post, but I do hope you can shed some light on this.
Please fix your light placement so we can't see 4x ring reflections in your eyes and glasses. Very distracting. Content was interesting.
I know!... If the channel picks up I will invest in a proper lighting rig, promise.
I just found out about your new channel. Subbed immediately! Glad to see you here! I too enjoy video games and love LEGO… but I never felt TLG ever had a true LEGO game. Yeah… even the new Fortnite thing. I’m not even sure what that is supposed to be. So I gave up waiting and just started making my own environment. No bosses, no 100%ing, no minikits, just good ol’ LEGO Build-and-Play What will you build?
