@@ult1m4t30wn4g3 Mario 64 belongs in there. Nostalgia is the only thing that game afloat, the levels are simple and mediocre compared to what came after and the camera is AWFUL.
Don't get me wrong, that game was revolutionary, but that doesn't mean it's a good game by today's standards, it's near unplayable.

If it's anything like the super best friends. Pat who is the more aggressive one kinda pushed the more soft fun lovey matt and liam away. So Bob being the aggressor and wood being the more soft one. That's not a slam but it tends to be the reason for things. So yes enjoy it for the time being. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I love the podcast, honestly it is more entertaining to see people disagree, and everyone has different opinions so it is fine for Wood and Bob to express what they like and dislike, so I love episodes like this. THAT SAID, I really hope that outside of the Podcast/CZcams content you guys are not actually arguing or having a bad time because it shouldn't be the point of this in my opinion, Wood if you want to be all sassy and difficult I love it, I just genuinely wish you are having a good time as well. Love to everyone who makes this podcast happen. You two are my favorite old married couple.

as long as everyone is mentally sound outside of the podcast i find it to be pretty entertaining
No offense guys, usually love your stuff but this just isn’t for me. I get the gimmick I guess… but if I wanted listen to someone talk about something they didn’t really know anything about, let alone “rank” that thing based off having not much real experience I’d much rather give the teenagers I teach a platform… which isn’t even a knock on the students at all.
It’s just not a valuable use of an hour of my time to listen to a Mario rank list when the majority of the games haven’t been played by the person ranking them… I was authentically excited by the title as I have a ton of nostalgia for Mario games, having beat most of them and was looking forward to see how my experience compared to yours.
This is just banter for the sake of bantering. I’m probably not the majority audience I guess, and I don’t tend to comment on CZcams much at all, but for some reason this seemed important enough for me to express. Hoping the next cast is more for me. Cheers.

Wow that 3D World debate was rough. I was mostly agreeing with Bob, but I knew what Wood meant. Neither were explaining it right, and there was some limited memory of the game at play I think.
I wouldn't be surprised if Wood called Mario Party an action/adventure game.

Just for everyone’s info, they’re playing off of the Zelda tier list episode where Bob also had his own controversial opinions about Zelda and it got heated - they both just get heated in different ways and it’s part of their personality and the bit. I honestly love when you guys do rankings, I'd love to see something similar to when you ranked every Nintendo franchise together but for a specific company (like Sega or Capcom) or PlayStation.
As a guy who played mario land back in the early 90s on the gameboy, its not fair to judge it today, just like pokemon bringing a "RPG" on your gameboy was mindblowing, so was a "mario game" on the gameboy.
The example that Wood gave for all the Super Mario games being the same could also be said for his favorite series

I would have to disagree with you there because there was way more stuff to do in the LoZ games and way more bosses and sub bosses to fight and it actually has a story to follow and stuff to collect and buy to help progress through the game. Mario just has to save Peach from Bowser

Ok so as someone who is sixteen and has no nostalgic bias towards either ocarina of time or Mario 64: yes, certain aspects aren’t great but overall I really enjoyed playing both on the original hardware and can’t understand how these guys who grew up with it can confidently say they aged terribly, I think both of them are one of the strongest in each of their respective series

I agree. I mean, yes, it's a pretty big/important franchise...but I don't feel nostalgia for it. I have more nostalgia for franchises like Mario and Pokémon. I fully enjoyed my time with Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World and Bowser's Fury. But I haven't even gotten to the first beast in Breath of the Wild. Been too busy just exploring and doing the shrines. One of these days, I'd like to play through Wind Waker and maybe get back into Link's Awakening Remaster....but at the same time, I'm not rushing to do it. The Zelda franchise as a whole, for me, is mid tier; high B--low A

Love you guys. I think your audience would be totally cool if either of you wanted to take a bit of a break from the podcast to work on whatever stuff may be happening outside of work, as the vibes have been a little tense in recent podcasts. It definitely seems that one of you could definitely do with some time to ride out what you're going through at the moment as it's making these quite hard to watch. Been waiting for this episode since I started watching the podcast
Super Mario world is the game that got me into gaming. My entire family would stay up trying to find the secret exits to each of the levels. Wood!!! Please play it. I know you are burnt out on 2D Mario’s but this one has some really cool things about it. Every ghost level can be beaten 2 ways. Every level that has a red space on it can also be beaten 2 ways and the second way always unlocks an alternative path. It’s so much fun! Plus some of the levels can be truly challenging.
With everyone saying how bad Wood is in this episode, I think I’m just gonna skip it.
I don't know why, but Bob's voice reminded me of Kermit the Frog in the opening like 5 seconds lol

Gotta be honest: I kind of like how Wood is actually taking all the Mario hype out of the equation and tells it like it is: it's pretty much just jump'n'runs and mostly rinse and repeat.
The jump n run is true, but there's not a lot of similar gen games that are evenly paired. I can't think of something like a Galaxy equivalent on the Wii or Odyssey replica on the Switch.
Then when you boil it down to gameplay there's good games but not great ones depending on your genres. For example Tetris is just as great as SMB but for those who only like action or adventure games would probably choose Zelda or Ninja Garden as their great picks.
Finally when compared to over time you have to play games evenly timed so something hyped like Sea of Stars which recently released is not fairly judged against an older RPG like Chrono Trigger or FF6 which had been out for decades.
All of this to say Mario is only "hyped" because the games are actually that good. Wonder will be better than Spider Man 2 just based off gameplay, rest assured.

Wood: ocarina of time is the best Zelda because it laid the foundations of future Zelda games.
Also wood: Mario 64 may have laid the foundations of 3d Mario but it sucks because it’s old.
Also can I note the whole “laid the foundation” argument doesn’t actually work. I mean the first Metroid, Pokémon or mario kart laid the foundation for their series but would you consider them to be the best?

Do you have any recommendations for some games that would work well while exercising? Strange question I know but I have been really enjoying the switch while on the treadmill. I have been playing Pokemon SV and the pace is perfect for cardio. I have done Zelda BoTW and ToTK but they are slightly more difficult with combat. Exploring and puzzles aspects work great.

New Super Mario Bros., the original, criminally undersold by Bob here I think.
It added the mini mushroom and blue shell, both of which were way more interesting than the big mushroom, which you could literally just avoid if you wanted.
As far as I’m aware it added star coins to the 2D games.
It added ground pounds and wall jumps to 2D Mario, both of which completely changed the gameplay.
And because it was the last d-pad only Mario game*, it’s the last one with genuinely tight controls.
If it was called Super Mario Bros DS, with the others keeping their names it’d be rated WAY higher, it gets lumped in with the rest but it’s very different to all of Wii, “2” and U
We’re not mad, but maybe try World and 64 again sometime… when you’re in the mood to solve some puzzle mini games. 😂
But for real, Mario 64 can feel pretty adventurey with areas like the boo castle, or the underwater areas… or… idk some of the later areas. But yeah… it’s sandboxy, not an epic quest… it’s about the interaction between you and the screen. The magic of video games. Plus great music… k I’m done heh

I remember reading Nintendo Power and seeing pictures of Super Mario 3 and it blowing my mind!
I don't care for Mario games, but I also don't think Wood can really talk about "at the time" with New Super Mario Bros (DS). For everyone who growing up when this game came out, the multiplayer battle mode in it was absolutely killer, and everyone was constantly playing it at recess. Even people who didn't play games much otherwise had a DS and this game and were absolutely willing to do multiplayer battle. It's a part of the game that both Bob and Wood (and most 30-something youtubers) miss out on because they were just a bit too old for it when it came out.

The new super Mario bros is my favorite game of all time and even tho I get woods argument about the big mushroom being anti platforming, the *blue turtle shell* was anything but. You got into one of those and you were zooming like a maniac on enemies, on platforms,on friends. I love platformers and at the time it was the epitome of them for me
Gonna be honest here this episode really was not that enjoyable. Not because of Woods opinions on Mario, which was actually rather amusing, but just the general tone of it. The first 30 minutes of this episode just felt really tense and not fun at all to watch/listen to. Even if it was just a "bit" it went on for far too long and at times definitely didn't come across as just being a bit. For instance, at 12:30 definitely came across as genuine frustration from Wood.
I mean all this as genuine constructive criticism because I otherwise love this show and have listened to every episode so far on my journey's to and from work.

1:06:05 what? TotK is not an evolution of *any* Zelda, it's just a new take on the formula. If anything it'd be an evolution of Skyward Sword, since it's the one that's most similar

Bowser's Fury felt like an evolution of 3D world, but way behind Mario Odyssey
Bob proposed building in Ocarina. Ocarina of Time was actually going to have a lvl editor via the N64 DD. Not sure what that would have been like but it was mentioned in Nintendo Power magazine.
