  • Into the HorseTV Global Archives! Nearly a century ago, the match race at Pimlico Race Course between Seabiscuit and War Admiral was one of the most anticipated sporting events of the 20th century. With the U.S. coming out of the Great Depression and war looming on the horizon, the nation stopped for just a few minutes as 40,000 spectators crammed into Pimlico Race Course and another 40 MILLION listened on the radio, including Franklin D. Roosevelt who stopped a Cabinet Meeting to follow these two champions in what was billed as the "Race of the Century."

Seabiscuit raced War Admiral not MOW. FYI both horses were descended from MOW.

My grandfather played a tangential role in making the race viewable in this film for its entire 6-furlong length. As many know, Pimlico was long known as "Old Hilltop", as the infield at Pimlico was a very large hill that actually obscured the backstretch for spectators on the clubhouse side of the track. Newsreel companies, eager to capture the Race of the Century for viewing in theaters before feature films like the Oscar-winning "You Can't Take It With You", appealed to the Maryland Jockey Club, owner of the course, to level the hill. The Empire Construction Company, my grandfather's firm, was hired to eliminate the hill. On race day, their film cameras set up along the homestretch, now able to capture the full length of The Race of the Century...

Wow! I had no idea that video of this race even existed. I see at least from what the announcer is saying that the facts in the movie "Seabiscuit" were changed quite a bit. Still, what a magnificent horse he was! I sincerely hope he had a GREAT life. Like many people, he was hurt, he was down but did give up, he TRIUMPHED! That's what drove people to really love him - he was down, he was abused, however, he not only went on but also achieved great things! The "little guy" as
Jeff Bridges says in the movie. Thanks for this! Awesome for you to upload this! Have a great holiday season!

I love horses, and I love seabiscuit.
    I can identify with seabiscuit.
As a child, I was told I would amount to nothing. But I always knew I had a special gift, and I did.
I've made people cry with the beauty of my gift.
Never assume you truly know someone's worth.. You don't, you never will.
That's reserved for God himself, he will make a mockery of your judgement and prove you wrong, time and time again.
The absolute best thing to do in life is to treat everyone with respect, if you don't, life will humiliat you in the most shameful way.
    My beloved seabiscuit.. ❤💪❤

Based on the wonderful movie, Seabiscuit was portrayed as so much smaller than he appears in this video. Anyway, great horse, wonderful race!
