- Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott Goldfine - musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in TIR Episode 91 (Part 1 of 3; see Part 2 here • "TRUTH IN RHYTHM" - Li... ): Keyboardist-singer-composer-producer Lisa Coleman, a core member of Prince’s Revolution band during his peak stardom years of 1980 through 1986. She then formed a duo with fellow ex-Revolutionary guitarist-singer Wendy Melvoin as Wendy & Lisa. The pair continues to work together, having also scored music for films and television. Coleman has also contributed to several other noteworthy artists’ recordings.
Just 19 when she connected with Prince, Coleman took part in hundreds, if not thousands, of rehearsals, recording sessions, concerts, aftershows, film & video shoots, and TV appearances with the man widely viewed as modern times’ most gifted and accomplished musician. Among the classic albums from that period were Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day and Parade. Key tracks and hits from those records and B-sides include “Head,” “When You Were Mine,” “Let’s Work,” “Little Red Corvette,” “Delirious,” “DMSR,” “Lady Cab Driver,” “Erotic City,” “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Darling Nikki,” “Paisley Park,” “Raspberry Beret,” “She’s Always in My Hair,” “17 Days,” “Pop Life,” “Kiss,” “Mountains,” “Anotherloverholenyohead,” “Girls and Boys” and many more.
After the Revolution was dissolved, Coleman and Melvoin went on to release five albums as Wendy & Lisa between 1987 and 2008, including their eponymous debut that featured their best charting U.S. single, “Waterfall.” Other catchy singles that failed to chart included “Honeymoon Express” and “Lolly Lolly.” They also contributed music to movies like Dangerous Minds and TV shows such as Crossing Jordan, Heroes, Touch, No Tomorrow, Shades of Blue and Nurse Jackie. Coleman has also collaborated with artists such as Joni Mitchell, Seal, k.d. Lang, Gwen Stefani, Betty LaVette, fDeluxe and even Alice in Chains. She continues to be very active today, and after Prince’s tragic 2016 death she reunited with all four fellow Revolution members to perform tribute concerts dedicated to their fallen former leader.
Here, in her most in-depth and comprehensive interview, Coleman talks about working with one of the most creative forces music has ever known and her special connection with him; the personalities and talent of the Revolution; some of the fantastic albums and classic songs of that period; unforgettable memories and highlights, including being taken lingerie shopping by Prince and Morris Day; dealing with the loss of Prince and carrying the torch forward, and much more.

Lisa Coleman is an awesome and true musician. 💖💖🎹🎼
Lisa's contribution to the Prince of pop was magical! She is appreciated for that contribution!
Love It
It was also overstated. Wendy talked more shit than anything else. Tried to take credit fo Purple Rain. I like Lisa but never liked her girlfriend
Lisa rocks. ❤️❤️❤️
So great to hear from Lisa Coleman!!!!!!!
❤️❤️ Got such a KRUSH on this woman!!!!!!!
DITTO...since 1983!!!
Ditto
What an amazing resonating story about Joni Mitchell!? I will never forget around the time the media announced that Joni was sick, and I sent her well wishes but thought heavily about how much Prince loved Joni Mitchell. My thoughts were centered around how hard Prince would take the news about her failing health or perhaps losing her. Little did we all know it would be the lost of Prince himself! Still hurts and devastating to think this genius is no longer among us!
Beautiful interview. I teared up a little when she mentioned about Prince bringing so much love and joy to the world. And the Revolution helping everyone heal. She is so talented. Beautiful person. Beautiful soul. Thank you.
Met Lisa @ the Ascap gathering a few years back. She was really nice 2 me and she gave me a hug.. Love me some Lisa C!! Thank U 4 this interview!!
ThaStriker

Such warmth from this wonderful human being, Lisa! 😍
What a wonderfull interview. Lisa is such an interesting person to listen to. I wish the interview was twice as long.
Lisa's Joni story 😂 "I played pictionary with Joni Mitchell!" 🤣🤣🤣 So glad she's seen Joni recently.

Lisa Coleman has a warm heart ❤️
Thank you Lisa for your insight on the Artist forever known as Prince 💜

Lovely. Massively gifted. Icon!
I always thought Lisa was so cute, definitely had a crush on her. Pretty eyes and smile, she still looks good. #respect
On the Dirty Mind album cover Lisa looks so On Fire. PRETTY WITH A TRIPLE P!!!!!!
Lisa is such a sweetheart. She seems like the type of person you could just talk to for hours.
I am a huge fan, I love Lisa and Wendy’s contribution to the music they created. My favourite Prince era was with Lisa and Wendy. Nothing can ever compare to that music they created. They met by fate and it was musically meant to be. Thank you for bringing the most beautiful music into the world.
Thank you Scott so much for this interview, wonderful
You asked Lisa such in-depth questions
Lisa is so cool
Her laugh is infectious, so calming
Beautiful person

Welcome!
Love you Lisa Coleman 💜🎶🎹🎶 and your contributions to the Minneapolis Sound
You are a very compassionate and patient interviewer Scott. Excellent. Excellent. This is all a beautifully interesting treat for music historians. Lisa you are the best. Moved.
I would LOVE to hear her demo tape for Prince! I learned so much about piano/keyboard playing from her.
I just loved it when Lisa said (@50:25), 'It's still unbelievable. You can come out now. We get it.' Lisa is wonderful...great interview! Thx Scott.
This interviewer is awesome!
Very relaxed wow👍🏿Lisa your the funkiest woman alive!!Omg i love you sweety so much🖤
Thank you for the compliment, and glad you enjoyed that interview. It is near and dear to my heart, Scott
@@FunknstuffNet Your welcome im a celebrity child my father was famous in the 80ds and 90ds.
I dont wanna say his name, but Lisa's friend took my father shopping for clothes when he
got his first record deal back in 94
She's a stylist/Its a small world huh?Keep up the good work👍🏿😉
Great interview. Very organic and relaxed.
Super cool interview. 🤟🏼💜Great job. 🙌🏼
I had a friend who knew Lisa's father. His name was Kerry Magness and he's the only bass player who ever got credited on a Doors album. He played on The Unknown Soldier.
LISA COLEMAN ❤️!!! I just love her!!
Back then there was only 2 people you watched at the show Prince and Lisa
Lisa, as well as Wendy added so much color and flavor to his work - it’s like that moment when Wizard Of Oz switches into color
Good analogy.
Good stuff. I really like Lisa especially when I saw her on the 1999 videos as a little boy.
FANTASTIC!!! Thanks SO MUCH for interviewing 1 of my favorite musicians on the planet!!! LOVE Lisa and Wendy!!!
Happy Birthday Lisa!
Lisa was havin fun on party up n the basement with the boys 😂😂😂😂😂
Wow.... Thanks for taking me back in the day..... Where did all the time go?
I can relate to back in the day. Memories
Ballad Of Dorothy is one the coldest jams ever.
Thought I 'd listen again tonight. I 'm used to watching on Wendesday
GREAT INTERVIEW!
My third listen!!!!!!!
"lisa, let's go2 the movies...lisa, let's go!!!"
❤️ this woman with every fiber of my being 🥰
Beautiful.
I love Lisa!!
Amazing ❤
Funk Yes!!!!
she's cuter than ever.
@Tony asshole
Dr. GX, I must say, your celebration of black culture is refreshing. Especially in this MAGA era. I personally celebrate white culture often!! It's not politically correct for us to talk like this though. Stay cool!! I'll stay awesome!! lol
I'm waiting for the Jesse Johnson interview with his band the Revue.
Have been after Jesse, got any line on reaching him? One of my all-time fave guitarists.
Absolutely Wonderful Interview, I've been waiting for decades for an interview with Lisa Coleman.
I always thought that Lisa was extremely attractive, I totally loved the fit and finish of her work and Prince seemed to have Jill sing backup on songs in lieu of Lisa and it was always very difficult for me to tell their voices apart.
For me, the big question that absolutely no one ever asks any long time associates of Prince is, "Do you think that Prince was mentally ill?"
I was married to a Japanese woman for 23 years and for 12 of those 23 years I dealt with her extremely taxing Multiple Personality Disorder / Disassociative Identity Disorder and many of the stories that people who worked with Prince, even when they were junior high school student band members, remind me so much of her being very different personalities literally every time that I saw her.
Check out Toure''s interview with Susannah Melvoin on his podcast, 'Toure Show - Ep. 14". Susannah says that she was engaged to Prince and felt that he was definitely on the Autism spectrum. Prior to that, I never heard anyone even hint at that!
@@kaybee7696 🤔A Mad Genius!🤔
It was interesting to see wendy and Lisa’s what’s in the bag vid.
Lisa's (and Wendy's) influence on Prince's music cannot be understated. There's a reason why he never quite matched the sound they created together during that mid-80s period after they left. And let me just say that Lisa's piano interlude on Dream Factory is still one of my all time favorite pieces of music. She's a real treasure.
Absolutely no slight to Prince, but as I wasn't expecting it I found the stories about Joni Mitchell more interesting. Love to know these little :asides' happen in life. "I played Scrabble with Joni Mitchell"!
Love Joni! Wish I was that lucky!
Let's open the Vault and listen 2 Lisa & Prince
Wonderful interview!
The Revolution is the best band of sll time
I’m a huge fan! I wrote about Wendy and Lisa for a project! These ladies rock! I would love to connect with them. I’ve been a fan for over 30 years! #nicowardmusic
Wow her tone was so compationate
Lisa must have piles and piles and piles of keyboard instruments at home. :)
❤️
i wouldn't mind listening to a Lisa Coleman Piano album.
A very interesting interview! I would never categorize or ever heard anyone categorize fusion as cheesy and I respectfully disagree with her assessment. Every musician who played with Prince had to be at the top of their game and Lisa obviously was on that level!!! Here is a quote from Prince in an interview in Bass Player Magazine regarding Andre Cymone. “My first bass player was Andre Cymone,” he remembers, “and Andre’s ego always got in the way of his playing. He always played on top of the beat, and I’m convinced that was just because he wanted to be heard.
“Andre and I would fight every night, because I was always trying to get him to sound like Larry Graham. Larry’s happy just going [mimics thumping open-string quarter-notes] - he’s not interested in showing off. When you’re showing off it means you aren’t listening.”
Very special child of God as i
Great interview but you forgot Emmy Award as well for Nurse Jackie!!!!!!!!!!!!
i love lisa!
Scott Goldfine, I would love to know about your story as a fan of Prince (and the Revolution). You seem to have been an early fan. When did you first hear about Prince? How did you hear about him? When was your first show? (I have never been an early fan of any of my favorite groups, since we the fans only get to hear about them when they are already big and famous. ) Thanks!
Thanks for writing, this link will tell you a lot. Let me know what you think. funknstuff.net/fearless-and-peerless-how-prince-kissed-my-soul-2/
Lisa still hurt talking about Andre cymone n prince beef damm
Wish the picture was more clearer. Why for the cloudiness .
Her camera/connection. It is much better in Parts 2 & 3 due to her being in a different location with different equipment.
Wow still pretty
Why can't I watch this
It is promoting its May premiere. Not yet aired.
We ALMOST were gonna get some insight on the Prince & Andre issue and He F#c* up the damn flow 😡
what a shame that her camera was of such bad quality.
Lisa was living with Kim uspher wat was going on in that crib with Andre cymone
Wendy and LISA'S was a season diamond and pearls. They could have been in that video .But more mature. The question did he want girls or women.
Lisa is still cute..
Amen my favorite Prince female protege EVER mmmm Jungle Fever love her in Purple Rain
Yea. Everytime I see her, I picture her on the keyboard during the Revolution days.
Even though she loves music, we know she had to work her tail off because Prince was a perfectionist and a workaholic. She played a very important part of the band. She is a great talent and I'll always respect her as a musician and human being.
I miss the 80's❗What a wonderful time ❗
☁️☁️✝️☁️☁️
He probably gave her those minimal parts in the beginning because she didn't want to do her job because he got onto her during a Purple Rain Tour rehearsal while working through the song "God" for reading a magazine....lol....
She’s never gotten her due!! Lisa was Prince! Always in his shadow. Even more than Wendy or Sheila!
Such a humble woman! She's Alfred to his Batman! So much respect!!
Facts
How can fans like me? Drop a message for Lisa or the others in the Revolution. Lisa is my kindred spirit and would love to ask her about music, synths and inspiration!;) if anyone knows and can facilitate for me the opportunity to chat with Lisa I would be so grateful 🙏🏻
Have you tried through Facebook?
@@FunknstuffNet with just her name?

Kim upsher or Andre cymone told prince to hire lisa
Well closet to y'all wat I been saying Andre cymone was helping prince out lol but anyway
Andre cymone mad prince madder
she said "that's a worthy cause".... gone Cynth... keep saying
I remember wanting a girl like Lisa. One who wanted me, to be specific, instead of Wendy!! Then I felt the same way about Vanity and Apollonia, then Sheila E and even Sheena Easton. I liked all the women around this guy!! What's this about not being able to look him in the eyes?! Major red flag. That's a Tom Cruise rule. Despicable dudes. Very much worth paying attention to though. At least Prince.
Damn you think it be prince n andre takin lisa shoppin to get lingerie
Lisa was hurt Andre cymone left
4th
Is it THAT good or are distracted? 😁
It's all to the good!!! on to part two!!!!@@FunknstuffNet
You know the 5th time is free! 😎
Lol@@FunknstuffNet
LOL!!! y'all
nice person. hard to understand. disjunct sentences.
Prince was hurt Andre cymone left because he steal his music anymore
Just passing thur I hate to say it Prince was very controlling that’s why Andre left Everybody knows that But nobody wants to say it ✍️
Dude, clean up your set 😂
She was not a great singer, but I always loved her backup vocals. When she left The Revolution, she was missed. I don't think Prince ever recovered because all his stuff after was lame.
