In this video I head to the edge of the Peak District to practice a couple of setups for future wild camping trips. Using my Bushmen 3x3 tarp I setup a shelter very similar in shape to the very popular Lanshan 2 tent. A tarp has endless possibilities for DIY tent designs giving you options to switch quickly between shelter types. Thanks for watching and I hope you found it useful.

Have you seen this old video of mine where I make Hexpeak tent with a tarp czcams.com/video/tWLdoZvTs1M/video.htmlsi=8PW0G6n7khUPZrs1
Paul, a guy called pupa hiker done a great video of this a few years back check out his video. He also drew it out on paper which made it really clear to see the pegging configuration. Great video as always, and good to "show" us what happens if you open the end facing the wind 😆
Another great idea if using just one pole. Hopefully be able to do this with the Bushmen 3x3 too. Very useful
There are a zillion videos on CZcams showcasing the same three or four tarp tent configurations.
This one, however, is a rarity to my knowledge. Nice one! Thank you for the education! ☺️
Nothing better than a cup of coffee on a lazy Sunday morning in sunny Northern California while watching a new Messner vid.
Quality sir 🏴🤝🏻🇺🇸
That fold at the end was majestic. Almost mum level folding👍🏻
I carry a cheap 2x1.5 tarp. Is small enough to fit in my pocket and is just enough to keep the wind, sun, rain off of me while I have some lunch. I pitch it over my tent to give a bit more shelter from the rain and in better weather use it as a groundsheet. It's been quite good value considering how much use I've got from it over past few years
I think everyone should carry a Tarp, just in case of emergency. Plus it can be used to extend your dry area if the weather is bad and you're using a small 1 man tent
Even on a day hike? My thinking lately is that my new pack-covering poncho would suffice, meaning my tarp would be overkill. Any advice? Opinions?
I was in fact at least partially inspired by Paul himself in one of his recent videos.
@@NeilEvans-xq8ik I carry a Fjällräven poncho and a few ties and pegs. The poncho stops any weight of rain dead and makes a nice little shelter for a brew stop.
@@NeilEvans-xq8ik I guess that'd depend on where your hiking and the conditions.
I was think more for overnights.
@@NeilEvans-xq8ikit's all about the tie outs, they are limited on a poncho. But if all u need is a simple A-frame or semi-pyramid, a poncho will do. But if u love messing about with different configurations, depending on the weather or site constrictions, you'll have fun with a tarp. Some tarps have inner tie outs for hanging a bug bivy etc

When you hear “there are endless ways to set up a tarp” this is what that means. Excellent. Definitely going to try that this week.
Thanks Paul, I've watched a lot of (wild camping) reviewers on YT (a lot of them poor), but you continue to give well constructed, professional videos, and in this one you have opened me up to a whole new world of possibilities with tarps! Fantastic and keep up the good work, it's much appreciated!
Yes, I usually take a 3x3 tarp car camping, and carry one if I can. I love the versatility. I've never seen it set up like this before though. Looking forward to giving it a go!
Paul
Excellent!
I am constantly using my 3x3 to set up a temporary shelter for watercolor painting in wet or damp conditions
I really like the last setup with the open front
My easel will be protected from rain and wind
Thanks!
Love my tarp. It always comes with me. It's the most versatile bit of kit I've got. Great vid Paul
Nice to see another variation on this one. I use this pitch with a 3 x 4 tarp and it makes a huge tent inside.
Paul, that's absolutely brilliant! I love the size of it and the versatility. I'll be closing it inside, easier to get out to relieve myself if I've had a can or two 🤣
Thanks for the upload, I cannot wait to try this!
Great tarp tent video! My son swears by using a tarp. My RECON MARINES son SHOWED ME A TIP that's useful when tarp style camping. Take with you four extra pegs and paracord plus a second ground tarp. In your living area inside peg each corner and lay your sevond ground tarp putting the paracord through the tarp holes. Pull the strings up so that the edges make an inside basement in your living area. It will be as deep as the pegs are exposed halfway. Great when rain comes to keep you much drier from ground runoff. Be sure to peg your pegs away from the sides to reduce top area runoff and moisture from condensation and allowing for airflow. Worth the extra weight when conditions get windy and stormy bad.
Lovely set up, nice and enclosed. Probably my favourite pitch configuration yet!!
honestly this setup looks great even for something like a beach day to keep the sun off. Not much extra kit, and with the door open wide you still get good ventilation. Cheers for the idea Paul, I love the videos.
i use my tarp for my dog if i go to the beach and i think he will get to hot
Very cool tarp shelter configuration! Thanks for the video and for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us.
I really like the 1/2 open version. I have a trip coming up and I can't wait to try it. Having the option to close it up it it rains is pretty cool.
Very interesting. Yes Paul, I do take a Basher camping, I tend to use a tipi Basher. Very stable, only one pole needed, plenty of ventilation and fast to erect.
Can’t wait to watch a new messner episode on the couch tonight! Thanks Paul👌🏻💪🏻
I love tarps! They're so versatile. Perhaps not the best for summit camping in strong winds, but most conditions they won't let you down if you've done your practise of various setups.
For your outside peg to close your flap tighter once inside, use an eye peg, a barbecue skewer and thread it through with a longer length and then peg inside with another one. Job done! 😮😊
yea i was thinking a pulley system, same same
Great idea, it'll keep everything tight too
We did a bivvy out on Dartmoor this Saturday and a 3x3 tarp saved us from getting drowned! Essential for that extra bit of top cover. Great video Paul
Looks like a great setup will have to see if we can make the same. Loving all the content you have been putting out recently. Forever grateful that watching you made me decide to go on my own adventures. Oh and I’m sure you’d be able to sort the condensation out in there with the pink sponj 😁
Very handy little shelter, thank you for that!
Really enjoyed this vid Paul, one of my favourite places too! I like the versatility of this tarp, the fiddling about to make it right for your needs and eating cheap rice on a hill…”can it get any better than this?” 😊 keeping it simple and remembering what this Jonnie is all about, thanks, Sarah
I love my ultralight 3x3. It's so versatile, there's 3 'main' configurations I use: the ol' bivvi bag hideaway, a basic lean-to, and one similar to this when you opened the end out. 2 trekking poles and a tarp with guys and you're set for the night.
I think Paul Messner in the UK and Rirang OnAir in Korea are my two favourite camping youtubers, always variety in whatever they do...
Great video really helpful with tarp set up. Thanks Paul
Great idea with the tarp Paul. And i really liked the idea of testing stuff of an afternoon and bit risking a poor experience overnight.
Fantastic bit of tarpology there Paul! I will certainly be giving it a go 👍
Great content. I always take a tarp camping even if I have a tent. They are just so versatile. I was curious as to when you were going to bring the tarps back out. One of the first video I saw from you was a tarp configuration video and you showed I think three different setups. I have packed a tarp ever since, and I enjoy watching them way better then the bivy or hammock videos. I just don’t enjoy those types and usually skip viewing them from all the people I follow. Love the tiny tent videos and bushcraft/woodland videos. Great job keep doing what your doing. 🤙🏽 🏕️
Fantastic video Paul! It’s always fun to get out for a brew. Can’t say I’ve ever seen someone make that Lanshan setup before. It’s pretty cool looking. Not sure I’d use it because of the getting in and out and the ventilation but I definitely appreciate seeing a bit of new tarp oragami. I’ve always been a big fan of making the Tarp Tipi so that last setup you showed looked really appealing. Gonna have to try that one!! Really enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing 👍
Excellent video and so informative. Thanks Paul for sharing. 😮
Sometimes I take a tarp DD 3x3 but I generally don't take trekking poles so usually when in a forest using a plough point setup. See you have a ground chair which is my favourite as they tend not to sink in. Nice just to potter about with your kit.
That's immense I'm doing that for sure !!! Thanks paul ❤
I like the second setup, more convenient access
Thanks Paul. I really like videos like this 👍🏼 Guna get out in the garden with mine tomorrow now to try it 😊
Another v worthwhile upload. I will be trying this 😎
I like that, thanks Paul. I’m going to try it with my 3x2.9 DD super light - it would work well with my Stratosphere and the S’lite weighs less than the standard weight single DD tarp.
Great tarp configuration. 😮 I'd need to have a few test runs in setting it up.
I absolutely love this idea, I am going to try this out with my partner as soon as the weather allows it
Play time over…you sir play real well 💯 I loved the 2nd tarp setup, Dave from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Hi Paul, you may be able to tie a taught line hitch or add a line lock to the line inside for the door. Great video as usual
genius construction method, i have an alpkit 21 tarp i will try this with.
I really like tarps and since there's plenty of trees where I live I most often go for a plow when I sleep on the ground or a diamond for the hammock. Your setup was really nifty, have to try it out. Cheers!
Paul them tarpaulin clip adjustable pegs come in very handy for connecting sides and flaps together
Interesting. Reminded me of the Trail Tent tarp pitch for thru hikers as demonstrated by Papa Hiker on his channel.
We did something similar with our Scouts about an hour away from your location. They were amazed
Yessir, I love my tarp! Great video. Great tip with the carabiners. Clipping the door back on the outside might pose a problem when you wake up in the middle of the night and really have to take a wee 😂
I use the x-boil. Quality bit of kit!
Brilliant Paul
nice idea, but for apprx 62g more you can just carry the Lansahan 2 fly and gain proper zipped doors and an easier setup.
I have just had a DA moment
I will stop carrying my DD Hammock ultralight 3x3 and start carrying the Lanshan 2 fly
The open door at 15.51 looked so much better. The “wizard’s sleeve” door looked awkward. Great setup.
Hi Paul
a quick thankyou for taking time out with your mate to go along and see my lad,Lewes(scouselad outdoors),his Lanshan 1 is in need of a bit of TLC 😂.Take care fella.
This is a great twist on the trail tent …. Papa hiker has a couple of tricks with his trail tent video that will help the flap issue …. I think your angled poles is a great improvement ….
I just finished a video today doing something similar with a 3x3 tarp. fully enclosed is the way to go, I am into bike packing now I retired and traveling light just with a tarp and two poles is so refreshing and minimal. I use the Swedish army meth's stove, so easy and clean.
Paul, What a fantastically beautiful area I am almost just as interested in your set up😊 - I am thinking for the wind that could be experienced on that peak, tent stakes size would be vital - What a nice set up I am going to watch this again and try to pay more attention to what you're doing rather than staring at the backdrop - Thank you for sharing
Love it up there, I was up there recently trying to locate the Ash cabin Flat stone circle; not the easiest thing to do I can tell thi!
Top class video as always Paul
Nice setup ! Thanks for the demo ! 👍 ...Alan in 🇨🇱 Texas
i use a dd superlight it does take some practice to set up the various ways you can use them but its worthwhile.i use a superlite groundsheet a thin lightweight inflatable thermarest and an alpkit duvet.its a very small and light kit and ive managed to get it into a 20 litre alpkit bourdon bag for a one nighter
Hi Paul, Firstly your choice of different cheaper equipment is really, really, good and refreshing against the normal videos, well done! You didn't describe what happened to the original pegs, I take it they are removed. Great stuff, your videos are really appreciated, carry on the great work!
The tarp doesn’t come with pegs.
You might have just convinced me to go get a tarp!
👍Nice one Paul
Lanshan 2 is a brilliant tent.
What a lovely video. ❤❤❤
Thank you, brilliant tutorial just what I was looking for. I already own DD tarp otherwise I would have purchased this super light weight tarp. Thank you 🙏
Thanks so much for this. The DD is a great tarp. Mine is a bit worse for wear now after a few embers from the fire burning small holes.
coolest tarps are the ones where you can seal both ends.. remarkable that 3 meters folded, still allows you to lay down full length 👍
I appreciate the versatility of a tarp but what a faff! The outer of the Lanshan 2 gives you the same space (it's actually higher), better ventilation, better pitch, faster pitch and doesn't weigh (much) more. It's like people finding contrived ways to build furniture from pallets. Just because you can do it, doesn't make it a great idea/solution.
It's a good option for people who have tarps but don't have a Lanshan 2. I'll never buy a tent, and this setup works well with a tarp for crappy weather. I have used it. It sets up in about 3 minutes, and if you fly the bottom of the tarp a little higher than Paul did, it has a ton of room and pretty good ventilation. Of the fully enclosed configurations I've used, this is my favorite
Very impressive Paul but my head exploded half-way through. I'd never remember all that. Think I'll just buy a tent 😁
I don't know where you're at but it's so beautiful. I've never seen Rolling Hills like that
Will you be doing other tarp setups? I've been enjoying your tarp trigonometry Paul.
I've used those solid fuel blocks before and also reckon they have a ~10 minute burn. Which I find is enough to do one thing, but if you're looking to have a coffee and a hot meal, or a hot meal with two separate components, you'd need more than one block and that starts to get a bit expensive. I've not looked at cutting them in half to get a ~5 minute burn (probably enough for just a coffee), as I'd be wary of having something that flammable just loose. At least the packaging offers some protection. I also got a stove for these blocks which weighs very little and you can fit exactly one block in it quite nicely.
I’ve halved them before for a small boil but you do need as you say to put them in a sealed container of sort.
If I want some peace and quiet I tend to use the fire dragon stove with the fire dragon fuel that you had. It was £2.50 from go outdoors years ago and I love having a coffee made without that loud burning sound from a gas canister. But it is weather dependant.
Mate that’s pretty awesome, just bought my first tent online Tamar 2 weighs about 45kilo lol so I think yours is a much better option. 👍
Very good enjoyed watching this , just wondering how the cost and wieght difference compares to buying a lanshan 2 tent , and maybe just using the fly on its own
Cool tarp tent
I've got 2 tarps, a DD Magic Carpet XL that lives in my day pack as a ground sheet. sit pad, tarp or emergency shelter as required, and a DD Superlight that I just got for bike packing so I can keep both me and my bike covered and hidden.
Like the look of that X-Boil stove too, might get one of the burners for the gel fuel as the Trangia gel burner is a ridiculous price for what it is.
I use a DD 4x4. It works wonders!
I threw a DD tarp over my single skin S15 lightwave in anticipation of a thunderstorm in the evening and by god did it pour down for three solid hours of some of the heaviest rain you can imagine. It did the job of keeping it out but it still wetted out the tarp which then proceeded to wet out the tent skin because it was in direct contact with it. So I still ended up with a soaking wet tent to pack up in the morning.
Nice one Paul ,definitely be giving that a go ,thanks for sharing atb deka
Infamous !?!?! 😡 personally I luvs my Lanshan 2 tents (yes I have two 😂) ..what you’ve built there is what I call a ‘Pup Tent’ … frankly not a patch on a Lanshan but if you want a very lightweight emergency shelter and don’t mind a few bugs getting in it works great …. Nice video thanks for sharing 👍👍
Great Video Paul. I have learnt so much from your videos. Thanks. By the way have you ever used a Thermos food flask for food or are they too heavy?
Wow! I've never seen a 3x3 tarp configured this way before. Great innovation, Paul. Thanks for the tutorial. I'll have to watch it a few times to implant this process in my mind.
I think that's a neat and versatile setup. Those 3x3 tarps offer so much versatility over a straight up tent which, for me, feel a bit claustrophobic.
👌👏👏👏👏 brilliant
I use tarps all the time I would be lost without one Paul
Love your videos. How is it going with bagging those little towers scattered on tops of hills? Watching you from the hills in western North Carolina.
Nice bit of kit, very small and light but does seem a bit complicated to set it up.
Bit faffy for me but nice set up when its done. I have a flying squirrel tarp that i would like to use as a super shelter so hopefully I can use some ideas from this video.
That bushmen tarp does look good.
Thanks Paul.
Agreed. It takes a minute or two more than the tent but a tarp can be pitched in so many ways depending on conditions and environment. Very versatile where as tents are a one trick pony. Don’t get my wrong, I love my tents but a tarp has its place 👍🏻
It will be nice if you compare lanshan 2 only fly with this way of tarp pitching 😀 great video btw and greetings from pl 😀🔥⛺
The camp I did on Friday the Midges would have got in there.
Hi Paul this looks a great idea. Also which size stove did you buy?
Hiya Paul, great vid as usual . Am I right thinking the only difference between the Hexpeak shelter which ive tried before, and the Lanshan 2 cofigurations is :- 1 pole in the Hexpeak and 2 in the Lanshan and all the rest of the pegging is the same . Thanks
Hi Paul, this is very impressive, versatile and neat: :o since my last trip I'm looking for shelters which are fine in strong exposed winds, do you think this is compatible? Also, I'm thinking you could daisy chain two guy lines together with a carabiner either end and respective tensioner. It should be a 0 weight gain as larks head and bowline can be used on the poles etc. Anyway, then you can detach the doors from the inside or outside with the line diverted around that corner peg or another a little aside from it? In theory, anyway lol. I love this, thanks!
What tent woukd you recommend 2 man ideally and my 1st time wild camping thanks
Thanks for the video.
There is one question: in the first version I saw a problem with ventilation. Air comes only from below and it can be very little.
If the part near the stick that you attached on the outside (then the inside), pull it out and make a visor (vent), and/or do the same on the other side?
Sorry for my bad English - I'm writing through a translator.
Could you use a lanshan 2 inner with that setup - will it fit well?
This design is originally by @Papa hiker! Would have been nice to mention that. He called it the Thru Hike Trail Tent pitch.
