7 Things I NEED Backstage! | My Top Performance Must-Haves 2017
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 13. 09. 2024
- Hi FRIENDS!!! It's me, Kat, and TODAY I'm going to share my top 7 backstage essentials. Basically, the things I love bringing with me when I'm going to do a performance.
COMMENT YOUR BACKSTAGE ESSENTIALS DOWN BELOW!
Like I mention in the vid, I'm not going to mention stage makeup or character shoes anything like that because things I actually use onstage differ depending on the show. Additionally, I like to do my stage makeup at home because it can get kinda crazy backstage.

I'm fairly certain that shows run on bobby pin power.
Same
I swear yes
Iâve literally lost HUNDREDS of Bobby pins and I donât even know how...
I literally have a pencil pouch with me at every show, and I set it out at my station for everyone to use. It always include fruit snacks, ibuprofen, hand sanitizer, cough drops and Bobbi pins(honestly same with these they disappear so quickly) and then I switch out what ever I'm feeling like! I love you Katherine thanks for this video!
Izzie D everyone needs someone like you in their theatre
MY MUST HAVES ARE:
Touch up makeup
water
sour patch kids
goldfish
cough drops
my steamer
cell phone
script
headphones
listerine strips
hair brush
bobby pins
wig caps
motovational quotes on a piece of paper
a picture of my family and
MORE WATTER
And Deodorant/spray
okay but goldfish is just
itâs an essential
i donât know why but it just is
i agree the only other thing for me is chapstick
In addition to all the things you mentioned, I also have a little journal/diary that I keep backstage during performances and so when Iâm off stage I can write. I like to write down how Iâm feeling and how the shows going and stuff so that when Iâm stressed out and sad I can look back through my performance journal and remember how happy performing makes međđ
Tori Wood this is a great idea!
I always bring straws because of mics and stuff like that.
Good idea
Thatâs such a great idea!
Tori Wood oh my gosh, thatâs so clever!
I love how positive our fandom is, especially the comment section. This youtube channel is the reASON IM HAPPY.
+katrina wirtz RIGHT OMG :') đđ¶
Three essentials for me:
Hairspray! I have extremely curly hair and I do a lot of period shows because my voice is more classical, so to get the sleek look that was popular a lot in the 19-early 20th century, I have to have extra strength hairspray.
Gum! My director for Les Miserables this summer introduced me to the magic of chewing gum constantly if your voice is having a bit of trouble. That plus orange juice and a lemon juice/honey mixture every night kept me from missing shows/rehearsals during a very intense week of shows for Mary Poppins and all-day music rehearsals for Les Mis.
Water! I drink an incredible amount of water on a daily basis but when I'm performing I drink even more. Water is magic.
Hufflepuffs Are Cool Too who were you in les mis?
Amelia Simmons I was a turning woman!
Hufflepuffs Are Cool Too lucky I've always wanted to do les mis I want to play Enjorlas even though I'm a girl
Hufflepuffs Are Cool Too I heard hairspray and corny Collins just started singing in my head "IS IT CHARM IS IT POISE NO ITS HAIRSPRAY!"
Hufflepuffs Are Cool Too Who were you in Mary Poppins?? I'm performing this year as Mrs. Corry (owner of mrs. Corrys talking shop) đ

Hey Katherine, I got the lead in the school show and this is my first LEAD EVER ! A bunch of people are going to see the show. (Plus a bunch of other directors I will work with in the future) is there any other advice you have? My rehearsal bag is pencils, pencils, pencils, did I say pencils?
Sophie Powers omg congrats!! Iâm still trying to get a lead... đ what show is it??
congratulations!
Congrats!! I wish you luck with rehearsals!
Thanks guys I am doing Tammy : the coming age story about a girl who is part trex. As you can tell this is an abstract show. I am Tammy!
Sophie Powers OMG SAME OMGOMGOMG
Love your videos, as always! â€ïž I'm so happy there is such a wonderful theatre-related CZcamsr out there!
+Eve Sperling ah THANK YOU! đ
Katherine Steele I just watched your Wednesday Addams tutorial video and you're 21?! I never would have guessed, you hold yourself very maturely! I'm 20 myself đ
I like bringing my script with me even when Iâm off book, just so I can check when I next need to come on and from way side of the stage. It is also helpful for me to go through the script if I get nervous so I know that I can remember the lines and ques and I donât panic on stage
Love you so much đđđ
I always make sure to bring my script so I can study up to make sure I donât forget any lines. It actually really helps even though Iâm normally off book within like a week. It just helps to make sure that you donât forget
I always have to have an emergency sewing kit, a hand mirror, and candy.
+Alexa Carlson ooh that's a great one!
I gotta bring headphones! A lot of the time I have a playlist for the character I'm playing on my phone that gets me in the mindset before the show!
WHOS READY FOR MEAN GIRLS THE MUSICAL COMING OUT ON OCTOBER 3RD?
Last time I was this early Roger's girlfriend April was still alive...
last time I was this early Maureen was straight.
Christiane Needs A Life LMAO
Noice.
At first I thought you were talking about Roger from A New Brain and I was so confused lmao
What to Bring
- Robe or zip up hoodie for cold backstage!
- Fan or towel to keep cool after a scene!
- Hair brush and beauty (like my makeup)
- Water
- phone
- food
I just came back from a rehearsal and I saw this. Made my day much better.
These videos always make my day feel 110%
I ADORED THAT GODSPELL REFERENCE!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
These videos are hyping me for doing drama next year at school. StoOOoOoOoOOp I'm already waiting for it.
these types of videos are honestly my favorite though!!
The one time I was on my phone backstage I missed my entrance
Omg I was feeling sick this morning and ala Katherine Steele, I drank copious amounts of water and felt better by the end of the day. Water ftw!!
Yes! I thought I was the only one who bring sour patch kids to every show! I also always keep them around during tech week in case I need a pick me up during million hour rehearsals
Hi Katherine â€ïž I always bring some colouring or knitting or something to the theatre. I get a bit stressed so it's nice to get distracted also our stage manager really likes to tell us every five minutes how long it is until the show starts from like an hour before it actually does đđđ love you loads you are amazing !!!
+Emily Ewins â€đđđ
Hey Katherine, I'm not sure if you already filmed one yet, but for your monthly makeup-character look for October you could do a really cool Into the Woods Witch look! I just thought of that character out of nowhere and I thought it might be good for Halloween! đđxxx
I always have a blanket...always...one time we did a play during winter that was set in summer.... having a blanket made it so much better
am I binge watching your videos because im excited for my performance and need someone to geek out with??? maybe....
I always put lemon wedges in my water - it tastes great and it clears my throat, especially if I'm sick
ahh backstage I always a dressing gown or a change of clothes because on a two show day we go out for lunch and I don't wanna be looking sweaty aha, love you Katherine!! â€ïžâ€ïž
I did the school musical and I was in the ensemble. We all brought HUGE jumpers to the shows because, in the opening of the show, us girls had to wear this sleeveless dresses. Backstage, it was freezing so we were all walking around in huge (like giant) sweaters with our stage make up on, our hair done and our dresses under our sweaters and we all looked ridiculous. That is such a good memory i have from that show.
I for some reason get sooooo unbelievably thirsty during shows so I always make sure that I have a water bottle with me that will inevitably get refilled at least twice during the duration of that one show. I also have to make sure I have my inhaler because all those nerves can make my chest a little tight.
I've been doing pantomime for a couple of years now and I also do shows with my dance school and a lot of my necessities are the same tbh! I always make sure I have water, some snacks (not really chocolate for panto though because it can make my throat a little clogged which isn't good for singing), mints/chewing gum but I find mints better because you won't accidentally leave them in, and then just some stuff to do when I'm not on stage e.g. my phone, a book, maybe some homework/revision, just general things like that, plus my glasses. Also, deodorant and maybe perfume so I don't stink, and makeup to top up/finish off when I'm there!
Love your videos Katherine!! xx
I haven't done a show in like a million years, but when I did, this is what I kept in my bag: Costume (if I brought home pieces), dance shoes, a hoodie or jacket (similiar reason as yours, Kath), water bottle, a pen, a pencil, the current book I'm reading, music and maybe a speaker, pixi stix (literal crack!), and a deck of cards (I learned to play blackjack during a show). There might be more, I can't remember, but that'e the gist of it.
I always bring:
- cough drops
- bobby-pins
- stage makeup
- facial cleanser, or makeup wipes
- phone and charger
- safety pins (just in case)
- a robe (mine is thin and lightweight and easier to pack than a big jacket)
- flats (to wear around before Iâm in costume)
makeup, gum, caramel hard candies, hairspray, curling iron/straightener, brush, change of clothes, extra contact solution, hair ties, chargers, water, deodorant, extra shoes, and a bluetooth speaker (if my cast mates dont mineđ) i gave you a complete rundown, sorry!đ
You are so fun!! Iâm in a Broadway Sings show this coming weekend and packing for it now. This helps! Iâm going to bring my Instax - didnât think of that before seeing this. Iâm going to do my stage makeup at home now after being rushed last time!
Hi Katherine
I have a little 'tool kit' in my show bag - scissors, sewing kit and safety pins are always included for last minute wardrobe panics!
Also my own roll of mic tape (it's like gold dust)
So helpful! I have a show in two days and I am definitely using these tips :)
So I'm watching theatre Thursday with my 2 year old sister and after the intro she goes, "and the worrrllldd"đâ€
1. Water or Gatorade, always
2. My phone and earbuds
3. Some touch up makeup and regular makeup
4. Reeseâs cups
5. Body spray and deodorant
6. Blanket or Jacket
7.Breath mints or gum
8. Granola Bar
my theatre bag
-water bottle
-makeup pallete,brushes etc.
-vaseline
-ludens
-brush
-hairspray hairgel
-BANDAIDS (im clumsy)
-script
-phone earbuds and charger
-snacks for my dressing room/pals
-DEODORANT
dude I am obsessed with your videos omg!! I have always loved theater and Broadway but I am just now really starting to get into it because newsies on Broadway is on Netflix (lowkey watched that a minimum of 8 times) but yeah I love you so much you du best
+Natalie Green aw thanks love!! đŠđđđ» #TheatreThursdayFam đđđ
I usually bring makeup wipes, my phone, a charger, fooooood, either a board game or a card game and a book so I can write if I'm feeling bored.
I'll definitely think of being my instax camera though!
The biggest must have: Paperclips, staples or folders for loose pages in script or sheet music. Also I'm playing Seymour right now and I have breakable glasses for when Orin shoves me and they fall off, so I am constantly having to tape them during intermission.
P A D S
I ALWAYS BRING PADS HOLY-
we were doing a production of Annie and i used the bathroom before the show and *S U R P R I S E* i was in dire need of assistance :") bless my wonderful castmates for scouring the dressing room to help me out
Fun fact: i was one of few middle schoolers in this high school production and these high schoolers were so kind lol so it wasnt that big of a deal really but i felt suuuuuuper embarrassed
And I keep repeating the part of you singing â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž so beautiful :O
must backstage things
1. fuzzy blankets/ jackets 2. touch up makeup
3. Bobby pins and hair ties
4. 16 ounce water bottle ( we usually do multiple performances in a day)
5. phone
6. All of my dance shoes (jazz, tap and character shoes)
7. strapless bras (for strapless dresses and what not)
My theatre performance kit: water, makeup, big pringles tube (to keep up the energy) hair bobbles and pins
I've been on a binge watching session of your vids! You are so smart and resourceful! You're also really positive and your personality and enthusiasm is infectious! Keep up the amazing work đ xxx
Yes!! I LIVE for sour patch kids both backstage during a show and just in my everyday life. They're my favorite candy. I always have bobby pins, safety pins, honey lemon lozenges & vitamin C drops, hair elastics, clear nail polish(for ripped tights), band-aids, Advil, lots of hairspray and of course my water bottle. I'm also a big fan of doing my stage makeup at home ahead of time but then I always bring my giant makeup case with me to the show too because you never know when someone has forgotten something when packing their stuff. Same goes for my dance shoes I'll always bring my big duffle bag of shoes ( I have multiples of each kind of dance shoe bc of different styles, colors etc) at least twice I have had people running around backstage bc they're forgot to bring their shoes đ basically I'm terribly over prepared. And in case you're wondering how I carry all of this stuff I usually haul it back & forth to and from my car during shows in a laundry basket, it's a little trick I learned in high school & it works pretty efficiently.
YES RED SWEATER YES HIGH PONY YES CHOKER WOWOW YOU LOOK STRIKINGGGGGG
What I bring backstage
-my script and dance shoes
-touch up makeup
-a pack of jolly ranchers (same idea as the sour patch kids)
-a jacket
-pens and my journal
-a book
-body spray
-my phone and earbuds
-so, so, So, SO MUCH WATER!! (Yay hydration!!)
hairspray is such a must for me. i use it so i don't slip with the bottom of my shoes and of course my hair too. but i was just in a production of hairspray and oh my God i used like 4 or 5 huge cans of it within 4 shows + a few tech rehearsals.
This is pretty much always in my performance bag; an apple ( I eat one before every show), cough drops, water, an assortment of tea bags, all the Bobby pins, hair spray, extra tights (I always seem to rip mine on something), and a book (reading something before a show, other than my script, helps me get out of my head and calm down my nerves)
I generally have some throat coat with me during shows. Especially if they're longer shows or during the winter. I also have homework that I bring to work on when I'm not on stage.
Ive never been in a show but Iâve started on screen acting lessons sooooo wish me luck
Love ya Kath
This background is so aestheticđ
+kaylathevlogger â€
Katherine Steele where on earth did you get those lantern things?
I always have Advil, everyone gets headaches and cramps so itâs just good to have
Last time I was this early Angel was still alive...
Lexi Sloan TOO SOON
TOO SOON
Too soon.....
GO SIT IN THE CORNER
âIlluminĂĄte Confirmedâ-Katherine Steele
I was looking forward to this. YAY backstage
I'm currently in Big Fish right now and we open next Friday!! I will definitely be using these! Thanks Katherineđđ
My top backstage must-have (after water) is apples! :) The pectin in them is great for your voice (learned this from a director who talked to a voice specialist at the Met), and the sweetness helps with nervous dry-mouth.
Iâm a dancer so my must haves can include peppermint oil for my ankles and Achilles. Bandaids seem to be a highly needed item, even if it is not a ballet.
i always have: throat losenges, my huge makeup case, a blanket, mint tea, phone, mints, a water bottle, deodorant, a cozy sweater, snackssssss
My rehearsal/performance bag:
- E-reader
- Phone
- Earbuds
- Script
- Water Bottle (Her name is Lily)
- Hair Ties
- Performance notes
- Backstage journal
Yes Sourpatch kids!!!
If you could I would kill for a video that is a conglomeration of every time you say "AND THEN THE WORLD" it would take a lot of work but it would be so funny XD
THANKS FOR THE TIPS KATH perfect as always :3
iâm in the wiz right now as the scarecrow, and whenever iâm offstage for one of my favorite numbers (like nobody bring me no bad news) iâll always get my phone out and film (WITHOUT THE FLASH) from the wings. and then, when i watch the footage back, i always get all fuzzy because of how much i loved the show.
kath schulz I'm doing a backwards version of rent. We start rehearsals next week. I can't wait omg
My backstage must haves: bobby pins, Lysterine breath strips, water (sound familier?),đ deodorant, makeup, hair brush. I love the idea of taking a big jacket, I will have to add that one!
My must haves are dental floss, toothbrush, charcoal toothpaste, chai tea bags, safety pins. Love you xxx
Deodorant, a ball point pen (gel pens are my fave but ballpoint has less of a chance of smearing or getting on your costume, plus I doodle on myself when I have gel pens and THAT IS NOT GOOD DURING A SHOW), a notebook for talking to people in the wings without really talking, and colored pencils to doodle with so that time passes faster!
+Alex-Ann Velasco đđ omg the doodling part!!
I bring a dry erase marker (for the mirror lol) and pictures of my theatre idols to hang up on the walls for inspiration:)
I love how u said getting changed in front of everyone is so awkward. People in my school production change in front of each other all the time and itâs become so normal hahaha
I always bring my script just in case I need to brush over lines and blocking đ€ and it helps in making sure I know when my scenes are coming up!
SammieGram71 shouldnât you memorize when your scenes are? iâm an actress and i do...
hamilton trash !! Oh yeah donât get me wrong of course I do!! I just have it just in case Iâm not sure!! Itâs always great to be prepared :)
Ahh! I just got the main role of Winnie foster in tuck everlasting! It is one of the first productions off broadway!
My must haves are my make-up in case for any touchups, my water bottle, my jazz or character shoes, Bobby pins, and my phone
I always bring lemon juice. like the one people use in their tea or for cooking food. It really helps if I have a sore throat. I also always bring deodorant and/or perfume, especially if I know I'm gonna be all up on another person. I also bring paracetamol and cough drops just in case.
These are some of my must haves in no specific order
1) Deodorant (extra strength)
2)Band aids
3) chapstick
4)water (once you've been in Brigadoon and Sweeney Todd without water, you learn you need water backstage)
5) hand towel
6) makeup remover
7)hand sanitizer
8) tanktop/ camisole
9) backup bra (the underwire poped during a show)
10) tights/leggings/knee highs/ spandex shorts
Sour patch kids, bananas, my knee brace, and headphones to listen to music while warming up and get into it. Obviously all that in addition to any dance shoes, makeup, hair spray, extra tights, water, etc.
Iâm currently in a show (we open in two days!) and what Iâve brought this time around are
1. Water
2. Book
3. My theatre pencil box that contains 5 spare highlighters, pens, pencils, erasers, paper clips, and a whole stapler. Iâm not joking.
4. Hair ties
5. Too much hand sanitizer because itâs good to stay clean
6. Lotion. Both body and hand.
7. Mirror because stage makeup
8. Chapstick because, chapped lips suck
You're a queen!! đđđ
Here's what I bring to every performance: Makeup Wipes, personal mirror (that way I don't have to crowd around a wall mirror if I'm sharing a dressing room with a ton of people), bandaids, stage makeup, water, a book (depending on the show, like if I am absent for quite a few scenes and have nothing to do), Bobby pins, a giant Winnie the Pooh button down shirt (same reason as your jacket, I just like my Winnie the Pooh shirt), stage makeup, water (Yay for Nathan Jr.!), my glasses, and slippers (the character shoes I have right now are super uncomfortable, so I get out of those whenever possible.)
mint essential oil (I put it in my water and under my nose if I have a cold... saves my life) , oil blotting sheets so I don't look super oily in stage lights, cough drops, water, my script (just in case I need a refresher before I go on), and Bobby pins or hair ties :))
+Delaney Young ooh!! I've been wanting to try essential oils!!
