The Orange Island reminds me of Victoria Island, the first planned city in Nigeria. In the late 60s, when I used to visit that place, every place was laid out like this with the plots only about 20% occupied. The crystal clear water that flowed in the wide drainage (yet to be covered) had fish fingerlings (Yoyo). You just dip a basket in the drainage and catch yoyo, and I did it a couple of times too. Thanks for your videos. It takes me back the memory lane. I am a son of the soil in both Eti-Osa and Lagos Island, but I have lived outside for over 3 decades.

Wow so that’s how V.I started …and the fish…I know it my mum used to buy it from Lagos Island for us so it was available for free then…thank You so much Sir for sharing your beautiful memory with us it’s priceless 🙏🏽

@@ToluNazzal First, I like your presentation format and your soothing voice. Since I stumbled on you about a month or 2 ago, I have learnt a little bit more about the current state of my hometown and the city I love so much. If I ever think of buying a real estate anytime soon, I will definitely think of you.
Yes, I got Yoyo twice from drains in VI sometimes between 1966-68, but I need to correct the impression that was where all the Yoyo came from. The Yoyo typically come from fishermen (just like other fishes) who catch the fingerlings from within our lagoon or the ocean.
Back when I caught the Yoyo in the drain, the water was too clear to be residential waste-water. I suspect therefore that the drain might have been opened to the lagoon somewhere, and it was just the lagoon water flowing through (just my thought).

Very pricey! @ 5:17 in the video, you stated plots are in 2 phases: phase -1 plots at 195,000/sqM and Phase-2 plots at 185,000/ sqM. Assuming std plot of 60ft by 120ft (669 sq meters), Phase-1 is N130 mil per plot and Phase-2 plots sell for N124 mil per plot. And project was already 92% sold out in Feb 2021. Who says there is no money in Nigeria?😀

I don't agree with this orange lsland reclamation. Since the construction of Eko atlantic Nigerian greedy developers are busy reclaiming lagoon and water bodies for housing.A national disaster waiting to happen.. Eko atlantic is understandable, it was a beach originally and fortified with giant stones, but this reclaimed lands are basically water and swampy area by nature. Houses on these artificial land are basically built on sand, not on solid ground. its only a question of time, the ocean will reclaim them sooner or later. All the artificial Island in dubai, the palm islands, are gradually been reclaimed and eroded by the sea.. Look it up Nigerians!! Lagoon are there as a place where the ocean retain excess water from the sea otherwise it will overflow into land.By turning these places into land, in case of ocean over flow, ocean tides, the water will have no where to go but to sink the estate.Thank you anyways Tolu for sharing.

I can never get the obsession for land reclamation all over Lagos. There are still many dry lands within our tiny Lagos state, but land reclamation has become a disease. The entire Lagos metro is a self-inflicted ecological disaster.
Lagos Island was one big swampy Island up till the early part of last century. To keep the mosquitoes bred in swamps at bay, the colonists build several Canals (small and big) all over the Island to deswamp. At the moment, only Ofin Canal in Lagos Island still exist half-dead sort of.
The last of the Canals, probably the most famous, was the McGreggor Canal (from 5-cowries to Ilubirin) build in 1948, that divided Eko into 2, the 1/3 western Lagos Island, and the 2/3 Eastern Ikoyi Island. Outside of the Obalende working class settlement already in Ikoyi, the rest of deswamped Ikoyi was a GRA for whites and upper class Nigerians.
Just 25 years after opening, Gowon essentially blocked Mcgregor Canal with his monstrous fly-overs. Dolphin estates (low cost and upper) were built on parts of the blocked canal, and the estates have never have respite from flooding since.
All over Lagos, our misguided governments greenlight projects on wetlands or reclaimed lands, and we wonder why we have perennial floods in Lagos.

@@therealist2866 Education is important in everything in life. Do I appear to be a Northerner from the account I gave. Nobody is more Lagos than me in ancestry. There are 5 divisions in the original Lagos State (Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Ikorodu & Epe), and I am connected by ancestry to all except Ikeja.
To get back to the topic, Lagos is a disaster in waiting. It is carrying far too many citizens for a healthy living. Our population density is just obscene. It is a city that is gradually sinking from the weight of human activities. The flooding will keep on getting worse and worse, until such a time that Lagos will be flooded all year round. No space for greens or recreation. We must build on everything to create a very poor quality of life, even for the wealthiest.
