  • Add to the serenity of any setting with the soothing sounds of a fountain you make yourself! Find project details here: low.es/1oXkYQR
    The fountain is basically just a base, a ball, and a pump. The pillar base and the ball are both made from concrete. To pour the pillar, place a bucket upside down on your work surface, and lodge a piece of pvc right into the center- the pvc shouldn't extend more than an inch or two into the bucket, and should be taller than the concrete form.
    Place the form over the bucket, and fill it making sure your pvc stays centered. The bucket will create a void in the bottom of the pillar to house the pump for the fountain, and the pvc will provide a path to feed up the tubing for the fountain and that's the base.
    The form for the ball is just a globe for a light fixture. Spray the inside with cooking spray so you get a clean release, and fill the globe all the way up to the base. This gives the ball a flat surface so it will sit nicely on the pillar. Just like you did with the pillar, create a path through the ball. Use another piece of the pvc, with the end taped off and push it all the way down to the other end of the globe. Use some tape to hold it in place. This is a lot easier than trying to drill through the ball later!
    Once the base and ball are dry, release them from their forms. You can just tear or cut away the casing on the pillar, but you need to be more careful with the globe. Wrap it in some heavy duty plastic, wear gloves and eye protection, and then tap the globe so it shatters into the plastic for a quick safe cleanup.
    Use a dowel to clear away the tape. At the end of the ball, and then trim away the excess pvc. Now you're ready to assemble the fountain. Prep a hole and place a pan like this in it so the lip is flush with the ground - put a layer of river rock in the pan, place the pump on it, and then surround the pump with more rock With the pillar on it's side, feed the tubing up through the pvc, then tip the pillar into place over the pump.
    Now, feed the tubing up through the ball so you can gauge the length before you trim it back. You want the tubing to come 'almost' all the way to the top of the ball.
    Seal around the base of the ball with some silicone and once that's dry -- just fill the pan with water, and turn on your fountain. See, it's that simple!

    You need to ensure the center the pvc pipe in the center of the cardboard tube and glass globe to ensure a perfect aligned fit when the globe is mounted on pillar. Otherwise the globe will sit off centered on the tube.

    They should have mentioned that it is necessary to give the pots a lot of water rinses and/or stay out in the rain for several weeks before planting. The cement is very alkaline and may kill plants if the planter is not given enough time to leach out the harmful (to plants) chemicals before planting. Also, all the rough edges can be smoothed with a rough steel file or coarse sandpaper id done right after de-molding.

    This video was so long ago, I hope Lowe’s answers me. I would like to also create the additional pillars and was wondering if they are solid concrete or do they also have a crevice?

    • @neversaynever7438
      @neversaynever7438 Před 3 lety

      I was thinking the same thing. I plan on making them to go with the water fountain. I think I'm going to insert a bucket or cylinder on the bottom (like the fountain demo, only thinner) so it's not too heavy. It may not make it as durable but will be lighter and use less concrete. I plan on inserting a PVC pipe for drainage as well. It should be fun!! If you made it after all post a picture of your results! I will when I'm done.

    • @neversaynever7438
      @neversaynever7438 Před 3 lety

      And I just found this video on how to make a lighter pot material, which seems doable for this project. It's called Hypertufa. I plan on putting cement color dye in mine as well.

      @keciapeterson9332 Před 3 lety

      @@neversaynever7438 you could probably do a smaller diameter form inside the larger from and tape off the top to create a taller base (if that makes sense)

    • @neversaynever7438
      @neversaynever7438 Před 3 lety

      @@keciapeterson9332 That’s a good idea. I was overzealous with the filler for the pillars and the cement broke away from the buckets I used as inserts. I had to add additional cement to the sides afterwards, which is still drying. Hopefully, the patch-job will work. This project was a little harder than I expected. I made the fountain a little bigger than hers and I used a Walmart basketball instead of the glass globe (I couldn’t find one big enough that wasn’t too pricey.) The first try was too small and ran out of cement to make the round portion , especially since I put the color in and had to match it (I flipped that one over and it became a smaller planter pillar.) It took a lot of cement and went through several bottles of the charcoal color to make it a gray/charcoal color. Also, it was harder than it looks lining up the pvc pipes. Even through I used a level and secured it they weren’t exact. Haha, still working on it and tweaking it...hopefully the enjoyment will come this season. But after a long year of Covid patients, it’s been therapeutic!!
