We went all out on this build & the materials we used are in the description for those that are up for the challenge 💪 But if you’re looking for a way to scale this idea down a bit, consider using a raised bed kit ( low.es/2WuB5ut ) or building your raised beds out of lumber: czcams.com/video/xC_Wa7OvuIg/video.html
Lowe's Home Improvement I like what you did but it doesn’t look English though
(Coming from a Britain/English person)

Actually, if you look into the history of well manicured gardens (1500's-1600's) it was the Italians who initially started this style of garden that today they get no credit for. The French was in to copy the style and make it popular and then the English. The only reason Americans believe this style is English is because of our association up to the civil war. However, historically the Italians are the creators of this style of garden.
FYI: this is a *French Garden* style. English Gardens embrace their natural landscape and environment; French Gardens attempt to control the landscape, usually in a geometric layout.

Thank you! Lol I was so confused why they called this English
Yes so true....some what. I’m not an expert but in all my travels to Europe, I think the average English person’s home totally has the natural English garden. I loved all the wild flowers, natural growth of vegetation. The French and Italian average home gardens were much more structured. But when I went to more formal English homes/castles, they were always structured. I love the Italian and casual English gardens. Like everyone had some form of living thing in their yard/home.
I was going to say the same thing. I have an English-type garden in front of my house and it's a more messy and natural style than the severe lines of this one.
Weird how they did such a nice job on the garden but didn't even realize it was French style rather than English.
@@nalaqueenofthejungle English homes/castles, or basically the rich people usually want the best at the time, thus many English homes/castles imported French and Italian elements, some even hired French or Italian designers. Some Italian/French/English castles are so big, they have their own themed gardens, some have all types of garden in one castle. So it's not entirely restricted to one style, but what style the owner wants to adopt.
i particularly like the addition of foxglove. my nanny used to say a true english garden should have a bit of poison.
English gardens are all about bee friendly plants fox glove, honey suckle and lavender, add Rose's and Voila!
With that in mind, try Nerium Oleander
Not if you have pets
I hear Giant Hogweed is a good addition.
just avoid that Shasta daisy! they smell like cat's pee
This garden looks great, but I think a hedge around the garden would have looked better than the fence, and would have looked more similar to the gardens I've seen in England (as a Brit myself)
That would have been nice too!
I have 400ft of box hedge in my garden in England...lots of maintenance and it's going to be gone soon.
An English garden that needs a lot of sun! We get 2 days of sunshine and call it summer.
This is a nice design, and I would happily use it as a kitchen garden or a rose garden. In my own garden I have retaining walls made from old, very thick broken paving slabs. I laid them dry, so plants can grow through gaps. To prevent soil leakage I used weed suppressant fabric on the inside.
An alternative approach in the first year or two would be to infill perennial plants with annuals until the main plants have grown. This gives the garden a more finished look, and the plants act as living mulch.
This was awesome! Please do other types of gardens! I'm looking for Japanese garden ideas!
Just Wow, the finished product is awsome, low maintenance no mowing. I just loved it.
Thats adorable, the picket fence really made that extra special!
That is awesome, I have never really been into gardens but this gives tons of ideas.
Nice job! I agree with other comments.Hedge should’ve been used instead of fence. Also should’ve included a total price for products used...
Wow ! This is exactly what I wanted , doing it next week 😃
That’s an incredible amount of work, but the payoff would be stunning!!
More an American version of an English garden. :-)
This is not very English....or British......it reminds me, very slightly, of some of the designs in the South of France, with crushed white limestone around raised beds. It's not English. Can't think of anything European that looks like this.
@@TellyWatcher1997 I agree!
You mean better in every way possible
I've never known an english garden to be so bare
@@TellyWatcher1997 GB is european. :)
A more accurate title would have been: " How to Create a Formal Garden". English gardens come in many forms such as cottage gardens with perennials beds and roses or naturalistic gardens with vast lawns, trees in natural copses, ponds and neoclassical arcitecture, urns, arbors, etc.
Beautiful!
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful... 👏👏👏
Love it. So pretty.
I hope there will be other type of garden videos like tropical and southwestern but this was a great idea
I've seen the same kind of idea (basically, setting up a parterre garden plot) using drought tolerant plants, boulders and stone in a southwestern setting.
Cute formal style garden design.
Great information, thank you.
Just wow! Love it!!!🌿🌿🌿🌼🌸🌺🌹🌿🌿🌿
Um classically inspired symmetrical courtyards like this are indicative of traditional French gardens, like those seen at Versailles or any Château along the Loire. Their structured compisitions cry order. English gardens are almost always asymetrical in nature, thier layered and contrasting compisitions cry chaos. The floral arrangement is somewhat English but is totally at odds with the hard landscaping. And yes, the fence is an odd touch, a hedge row would have been a much more suitable choice to give the feeling of seclusion and intimacy of
an English garden.
Love this English garden it turned out beautiful!❤️
It's not an English Garden.
It's beautiful....thank you for sharing.
Might need a better mic in future...
Also when is the Weekender coming back? I need more Monica!
yeah, I had to mute the video because the sound was awful.
That is beautiful! Great job!
Lovely, but the picket fence needs painting the same grey as the house as it looks odd that colour...It will look much better once the plants have grown, but very lovely indeed
It's beautiful !
As an Englishman I can confirm I've never seen a garden like that in the uk
Regardless what kind of garden it’s called, can they come do this at my house?😂
Damn .... You make it look easy and fun to do !
Love it!
Wish they showed the part where they set up the fountain.
Awesome and beautiful, thanks for sharing❤️
What I like about Lowe’s is they have plants that are a little dried out on sale for 50 cent one dollar etc. I got 1 gallon knock out roses for $2.50 this is great for people who don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars
With a little love all the plants I purchased came back to life they are perrinials so I will see them for years to come with little investment
Oh my god,so beautiful garden😭😭👍
I live in Cambridge UK and no one uses box as an ornamental unless it's shaped, and why in a raised bed.
I've been all over England Ireland Scottland Wales France Italy and Croatia and have NEVER SEEN THIS ANYWHERE BUT in the U.S.!
That was awesome!!!
Wow, that’s a heck of a lot of work! Looks great tho
Kathy Skidmore seriously they busted a nut on this one.
Excellent.
wow so beautiful
Beautiful
Very nice, thank you.
Don’t let the 11 minute run time of this video fool you lol. This was a TON of complex work that probably took several days to plan/complete. If only DIY were this fast/easy. 😂😅
This will take 4 to 5 days with intense labor and 2 helpers , add 3 k of cost at least
Thanks Lowes, another wonderful video, very helpful.
Very interesting. I think my English garden video in England would be classed as ‘informal’
That's a lot of information 👍
Thank you.
Looks very nice! :)
Anybody actually priced this out recently?
There's roughly $1000 worth of bagged soil there alone.
A $20,000 garden?
That's cool.
Very hard work...wow
Nice ...but wow the cost of doing this for the average home owner.😮
The simplicity is in a way very Zen. Its so organized. It looked like a lot of work though... So first world! But I wonder if the carpenters in Asia can just copy this with their bare hands... or at least shovels and big knifes. The Landscape Fabric Now that would an essential and cheaper alternative to those blocks? Its be less English, if it was wood? But it may still be as charming. Picket Fences would so exotic in my side of the world. Anything the video is Subscription worthy. Excellent.
Superb.I like it.
I feel so bad for whoever has that waterhose water pressure, that was sad! You have my sympathy lol...beautiful job 💪
Beautiful...please make a video on how then garden.....
What he meant to say at the end was now you have the best garden in the neighborhood that you can flex on with all the other people and the regular grass enjoy
Very nice
That's a French Garden!
Right on
Cool..well now I'm off to take 5 mortgages out on my house, recieve 7 bank loans and sell my children all to build an english garden. While I enjoy these lowes videos, the projects they show are always absurdly expensive for just an average person who wants to do some gardening
Yeah it’s like this retailer wants to make money! Lol just kidding because yes I do know what you mean. Just dealing with 811 would be involved process
Nice
how many pavers were used to build this. i sure would like to make this at my vacation house.
I'm American living in England. This is more an italian or some other formal garden (which can also be found in grander English Manor Houses). This isn't near loose enough for an english garden.
English gardens also focus on pastel/softer flower hues. Reds and oranges and strong pinks aren't common.
This Dude is a babe. If this vid was not corporate Lowes......he should have been narrating in cut offs and a tank top.
Beautiful
Just not cheap to do
I know a lot of people don't like it, but mint actually makes a very good filler, as long as you keep it controlled, though it will die during winter, so be prepared to have a clean bed or have something else ready during that time
Am I the only one who thinks this dude talks like Chandler Bing from Friends??
lol
something about the sound quality makes his voice as irritating as nails on a chalkboard!
Johanna Eldridge I thought I was the only one.
Could I do this for a vegetable garden
It's more like neo-classical inspired garden for me... Or European.... probably the only linking that resembles English are the lavish and flowery types of plants used in the garden. In a glace, I also can see it resembling Italian garden? as it emulates Renaissance yard... with the fountain.
I can't with this guy's intonations 😅
Even though I love the end result, I would never undertake such a huge and expensive project. myself. Can you make some videos for novice diy types, thank you!
How about a parterre garden on a budget - say $200?
I'm thinking how beautiful even 1/4 of this would be. I'm not big on spending all that money either, but this is a great idea for starters and you can always improvise.
You could reduce costs, but still have a similar look, by not using raised beds, and by using cheaper fencing. Picket fences are not common here in England. The raised beds are nice, but many gardens here would just use some type of edging to stop the gravel mixing with the soil, and then define the edges with creeping plants.
I'm curious to know what the cost of doing this garden was?
Yes what's the cost
About 10 weekends I’d guess and ones sanity
How did you add the fountin
From zahid
English Garden are not like this
Give as a link with true English Gardens!
rupertstun this is a *French Garden* style. English Gardens embrace their natural landscape and environment; French Gardens attempt to control the landscape, usually in a geometric layout.
@@MysticDonBlair I totally agree. French gardens look way better.
This guy does a good job. But the cadence of his voice!!!!(start high pitch) dah dah da-da-da...…(lower voice) da dah dum, dum-de-dumHe's so consistent!
how to prevent weed grow up on walkpath for the longterm, any idea?
This looks so good except for the black plastic landscape edging. My landlady has that black edging in her yard and it looks so bad.
Like.
I'm not sure how 811 utility finder works in all places, but be aware that in some areas they only locate utilities to your property line from the street. They may not come onto your property which is where you need the information if you are building a project! I live in Kennewick, WA and the utilities companies would only mark the utilities up to my property line. My project was inside my property quite a ways as my house is at the back of a one acre lot! So 811 was basically useless for me! They told me that I would have to hire a private company to come and locate within my property line!! I was on a tight budget and couldn't afford the private company fees so I ended up just winging it and just digging VERY, VERY carefully!
Funny when your watching from England and when the video isnt true
I say this as an American...we love to pretend things are a particular european style...only for it to be completely wrong lmfao. We do this all the time with Asian culture too. It's like when all these people get tattoos of chinese characters thinking they say powerful or strength, but the character says something instead like onion or potato lol
Greetings! How much a project like this one?
Wow, how much did all this cost?
His mom must be proud of him 😂👏🏼
nice music
I would have used a shorter picket fence instead of a 4-footer, so the garden would look more "friendly." It would be nice to know what the total cost was to create that "English Garden" look - the excavator, renting the tools, all the plants, all the top soil, compost, potting soil, concrete blocks, adhesive, base and gravel, plus the fence. And if one person was doing all the work, how long would it take - realistically. Come on, Lowes. It's beautiful, but how practical is it for most of us, really?
what was the grand total? please and thank you
Ha ha, I'm in England and my garden certainly doesn't look like that
I'm not surprised. I can't think of any English garden I've seen that looks like this.
What type of mulch was used?
Here it is, Deanna! low.es/2wIUwR7
This is exactly what is NOT an English garden design. This design is based on Medieval and 17th century French gardens, which were in turn influenced by Islamic and Roman style gardens. The 'English Garden' developed a bit later, and is more of a reaction against previous design principles. It defies strict symmetry and straight lines and instead embraces a more natural aesthetic. This is possibly the most basic lesson in landscape design history.
can I just hire you to do that for me? the compost tumbler I asked my husband to do for me has been in the basement for months. thats just a bucket lol I will probably be a 100 yrs old before that thing gets done
Lots of english houses have the garden as big as garages in the states lol
how much did this cost?
How much would it all cost to hire a professional with materials included?
doesn't the elevated planting bed need a drainage underneath ?
For a second i thought he was going to work with a nerf gun x)
How much does this all cost?
Great ideas. But, give me a moment while I transfer my kids college funds into the amount of money I would need to spend to fill those beds with Miracle Grow raised beds soil at $9 a bag. I am pretty sure the raised bed soil cost more than the blocks and paver base.
Cost? Guessing a grand or 2
