- Nippy Betz refers to student loan debt as "the enemy," and proceeds to explain to the audience how they (or their children) can "fish" for the scholarships they need to go to college debt-free. As he makes clear, before he goes fishing, he does some research -- about what the fish are biting, etc. Kids need to do the same. Betz then moves on to identify the 3 common types of scholarship: functional (having to do with their major), institutional, and general. Critical, he says, is the number of scholarships applied to! 20 is NOT enough! Try for 100-200!

Hi Jasmine! I'm actually from San Antonio Tx and accepted the invitation to speak because I thought it was N.C...LOL! But I'm so glad it was Delaware because that TEDx operation was simply amazing! The guy (Ajit) running Wilmington TEDx is retiring, but their process and Worldwide exposure have allowed me to help 1,000's of more families all over America. In my opinion + experience, this advice is largely for HS kids. Once you’re a college sophomore, the amount of scholarships drop dramatically, whether private, gvt or institutional. There are a lot of scholarships for college juniors, or ones that don’t factor the academic level. But there are many, many college scholarships aimed toward HS seniors bc selectivity stats largely are made for college freshmen.
I’ve researched 100s of scholarships - used most major websites from FastWeb to Unigo to different fed gvt programs.
As far as the other criteria, like club association, being left-handed, interest in photography, many can still have an academic level desired, which is often a HS student. Again, there are some (such as essay-based or lotto) that don’t take the academic level into consideration, or are open to a variety of levels. But the HS senior is often the most preferred, at least that's been my experience.
I am a teacher in Puerto Rico, currently working on bettering student's SAT scores and implementing other courses in school like entrepreneurship, farming,etc. Any possibility this can apply over here? We are currently trying to start them up for college and get scholarships.

All he talked about was that students can get through college without being in debt. At no point did he say how to do that. He gave empty words of wisdom.

He basically said just shoot your shot and apply for a hundreds of scholarships not just settling for 20
