- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. How important is your education to you? Have you ever thought about designing your own education? Till H. Groß is a remarkable young man with a passion for psychology. He took his education in his own hands...with mind blowing success.
As soon as Till finished High-School he took his education in his own hands. After reading the whole psychology section of the small town library in his city, he set out to personally meet the authors of the books that thrilled him. In 2011, he started to consciously seek out the best psychologists, therapists and coaches all over Europe in order to learn from them. He visited them at home, attended their workshops and engaged in long email conversation asking numerous questions. His teachers were the founders of whole psychotherapy schools, masters in their field and some of the best paid coaches in Europe. Having the best teachers possible sped up Till’s learning curve immensely and enabled him to give talks throughout Germany at the age of 19, hold a guest lecture at the University of Vienna at age 20, conduct his own seminars, found a startup, and work as a coach at the age of 21.

@Janice Brown Wow. I see it now. Thinking of my friends that are also only children, most are also similar, critical thinkers. I guess it really is true. Thank you so much, you've made me realise that the loneliness was eventually, in reality, the best thing that happened to me. It has been very hard looking after my single mother since young but I feel it gives me much purpose. Genuinely thanks so much.

His talk is not about leaving school or University, it is about you gotta take another chance to get your real life experience, and if you didn't get chance to go to University, that's doesn't mean you will be a failure for the whole life, this is among the best talk I think.

I don't think one's fluency in english in anyway limits one's intellectual capability and intelligence.

I actually love self-learning, and hopefully after my bachelor's degree, sign up for more learner-centered education or educational structures that I can do on my own for my higher education. What worries me though is that our society's economy is very old-school (at least in my developing country) and are more after those who graduated with a "degree" from traditional schools. I'm planning to be self-employed someday but people whom I might work with might not take me seriously based on the credentials that I plan to have. So right now I'm looking for people or a community who took this life path and I'd like to talk through about the cons of living life through this way and smash through them!
Finding one's purpose is not something that's handed to you, and it's the hardest thing to find! I've also always considered studying as a part-time thing... I've been playing lots of music, learning how to be a teacher and a journalist at the same time. Be curious my friends and seek your passion!
It usually starts by following your guts and doing the things you enjoy as well as you can.

Actually his father did what all or most parents do he simply guided his son in the direction he wanted him to go in a non-confrontational manner. note: he was playing pro basketball until his injury his father stepped in and payed him to dictate psychology books for him to listen to on his way to work. the son unconsciously began to develop a passion for psychology after months of performing dad's requests. bread crumbs

This talk was immensely illuminating. When I realized how beneficial this would be to my own intellectual learning, I immediately grabbed my notebook and began writing notes to grasp and remember the content as much as possible. It is crazy to think that I am close to his age right now, 20. I sympathized with many of his points and his disappointment with the formal education system. Thank you for this!
I am totally agree because university only prepare you for academic purpose not for practicable world you need to gain experience and self skill in order to achieve your goals . I am very impressed with this guy he is my brother friend he is really polite and humble guy .

27 year old college grad here. Hopefully we'll change the international education system in the future to work for everyone. With that, shall the generations after us be able to improve upon that education. All of this said, I cannot see our current education system continuing on successfully in the future, so an overhaul of the system is needed.

3. "Learning is more important than making money"
Yea, if you are blessed financially. This is such a privileged statement. So many people do not have this option because basic human needs are not provided by state or family.
Even for these people learning is more important than making money, it's just a matter of what to learn. Some people need to learn more immediately useful skills instead of psychology. But humans need to learn things as a prerequisite to just about anything. And it's not just a human thing, all mammals learn some basics from their ancestors.
I reckon the standard concept of education in western society is disaligned with reality, for learning has been equated with ivory towers. However, learning is just what the word means, the consolidation of information and development of a skill

@@komencanto That was my point. I even talked about animals. When very poor people try to grow food to eat, as was the case for most of the last thousands of years, learning the minimum to grow the food is still a prerequisite. A mammal predator, like a big cat, has to learn to hunt before being able to live independently. A child left alone right after birth will die, because it needs some level of development first, mostly learning, to even try to survive. The whole point of my original post was that education/learning, by the fundamental definition, is the most important thing for any human being in any material situation. It has nothing to do with formal, academic or whatever more sophisticated type of education you're thinking about. Also, that does not imply that people should be learning something every time. I'm just deducing the importance of learning by the premise that the importance of something in the context of a goal is proportional to its necessity for the goal. Knowing is a prerequisite for any goal. Assuming that we aren't born knowing enough, and we aren't, knowing comes through learning.
I say earn. Some spend a lifetime earning. Don't forget to learn.
University has easily become one of the most overrated things ever! In most places, it will teach you that you should destroy your dreams, live a limited life and stick to the degree you took even though you might regret it later. But it will also (if you're willingly) open your mind to new horizons and perspectives you can discover. At least I learned it that way!
Everything we've ever wanted is right on the other side of the fear that we develop since youth. I grew a great deal in the last 6 months by being unemployed after being fired from a 1 year job in a company that has been swarmed with corruption, bad values and nasty, nasty people. I'm using a lot of things I've learned from several people including Till and turned my negativism into positivism, my dreams have REAL hope now and I'm following what I believe in and what I wanna do. I've started 2016 with a bad life but this year will mark the path to success for me. Are you courageous enough to that? Do you have the vision and ability to see past many negative things you've been taught since you were a child? Are your ambitions bigger than your fears? You have a chance to live once, do not waste it by living how others tell you. Find out how to live it and live it, damn it!!

Yep :/ I suck at taking exams so I will fail college if I continue but my mom equates "going to college" to "learning". I told her I don't want to continue and she said "but how are you going to learn or get a job?" :/ I can't do it..

Trophonix Go for an apprentice, where you can learn things practically. Colledge is not the best way for everyone to make a proper education. It can actually ruin your life. The System is very fucked. Speaking from own experience. Sorry i cant go in detail for now, but if you dont have a vision of what you want to do with your degre then learn practical things. you will mostly develop better skills step by step then just going through the martyr of examing yourself to death, leaving colledge more depressed then anything. Practical skills getting more and more important again in economy, and you can make a decent living out of it, investing your money in property. If you get out off colledge you most likely will be around 25-30 first time starting earn some money. If you are a woman no one wants start a family with you, couse you re getting to old. For men, they just getting into a profession and need maybe another 5-10 years till they are independent. Where by a worker is easily independent around 30, beginning their first house to build, paying off a car, starting a family, maybe having extra time and money to really educate themselfes based on their practical knowledge... Just dont study because everyones studying. Dont go with the flow!

I’ve been working on construing my own career without education and I’ve ran into many obstacles but this video has granted me a lot of clarity. After hearing “no” and “school is the only way” I’ve began to get discouraged. This talk really got me back on track‼️

This was the talk I needed to be certain that I dictate my own education. Recently, I have been indulging myself into different academic disciplines, such as the biological mind, computer science (learning how to code), mechanical engineering concepts, and etc despite never learning it in high school. This being said, however, I will be attending an architecture university in 2020. Since my program heavily focuses on design rather than the practicality of structures, I worry that my "education" will be too narrowed down. Don't get me wrong, I know (so far) being an architect is what I dreamed of becoming since young, and yet I question the possibility of intertwining totally different disciplines. It can promote fascinating perspectives of what an architecture can be such as the integration of technology and design, psychological impact on one's brain when entering a building, and etc... An inspirational person comes to mind from this talk, Neri Oxman. She is known for art and architecture that combines design, biology, computing, and materials engineering. She was told that biology is not going to take her to become world class architect, yet here we are, she initiated a course of "bio-architecture" of some kind. Through her and this talk, I realized there is no such thing as "bad knowledge". You just learn for the sake of being eager to learn. Don't let what your university degree dictate the scope of your education.
I feel as though many university has lost touch with the intimate understanding that students are there to learn to better themselves. There is so much beauty in seeking for knowledge regardless if it aligns with my pursuing degree.
The actual Latin meaning of "amateur" is someone who does so purely for the love of it. And so, I want to be an amateur. I want to dictate my own education and not be limited to what my university course offers me.
I don't mind if this comment will not be seen. I am merely here for myself, to tell myself, that this is what my reason is for seeking education. Perhaps in the future, I will reread this comment and reflect on my progress...
I love this so much, this is exactly what I needed to hear. I've been thinking about dropping out of University to pursue a UX Design career and now I know that I've just gotta hustle through the degree while developing necessary skills on my own. Thanks so much!
I just finished my formal education. I finished Law, Banking and am now majoring in General management from a super expensive private faculty which has a million dollar view from the library.
It had a total cost of a luxury SUV to my parents.
University is a mix between a bad kindergarden and a terrible psychiatry. I totally agree with this ted talk. It hasn't brought me a single cent, hasn't taught me any skill. It has only brought me insecurity, financial problems, psychological problems, destroyed relationships. I pay for sports just to stay sane. But at least i know how to cite and write academically about useless stuff after 20 years of torture. Thank you formal education, I can't wait to defend my useless thesis.

Let's face it his dad being a therapist took the opportunity to change his son's life forever by paying him a very handsome amount to read and record psychology book for him to listen as audio while driving his car.
I'm pretty sure his dad knew that this trick would change his son's life without his son noticing it for longtime.

I have the opposite situation--- not only no one supporting me to get ahead, paying me, but a long chain of severe life blows, snags, setbacks, beyond my control, severely derailing & disrupting all my efforts... blow by blow... in real life. However, I also see God with me, with hope, "He can make a way where there is no way."

He does have good points, but mileage may highly vary depending on your level of privilege. For example, you can only work for free, if you somehow have some other type of support that allows you to live rent or bill-free. If you have to live on your own and pay for an apartment, food, etc., some of his tips may not work as well.
Who says he didn't also have a night job to pay for all the things that cost money? He sounds the sort who would have done anything to get where he wanted.

I relate to this guy SO MUCH. I am so passionate about Psychology and this is just.... He is speaking my heart
these are terrific suggestions, and i find educational institutions to be less and less respectable all the time, but many of these options are not viable for students that have to work, among other things. there is a lot of privilege that allowed these people to accomplish what they did and develop these methodologies. a year of four unpaid internships? not in most people's wildest dreams.

I live a life surrounded by negative people, critics, and traditional wrap-ups. They keep on motivating the young people to pursue technology degree through their statistic and marketing, but in reality there is such thing that some students might ended up working with their own hands on the construction fields, jobless, and more. In school, they taught different subjects in general concepts that I find it hardly to focus. Not only learning in university brings negative impacts to me, but the older seem to believe that because the learner earn less than they do simple business or income, they tend to judge that learning is useless and it is not so valuable to learn to much. Now, I throw away my engineer degree, my business mentor, and critics in order to study online to build a career I love and the true education I seek to understand in real life.

Nothing so wrong with "working with their own hands on the construction fields". My husband did that for 40 years and now we have a very comfortable retirement income. Today all the kids want to work on a computer......lots of good jobs are going unfilled out there "working with their own hands".
studies are destroying creative minds if the study not 100% fits which it won`t in most cases. I just finished studying and working for 8 years and now starting just learning the stuff i need. Study made me depressive in the end. Now i feel lucky and free and quit everything and travelling the world soon. Go for someone in your field and work with him or just watch youtube.

im 16 and i came from serbia a year ago, when i came i was going to a school where you have school subjects for "Hauptschulabschluss" and learn German, but then I got bored and 6months later i transferd to another school and did the "Hautpschulabschluss" and "Quali".Today I'm going in M10 after that I will go to FOS and go Studie if I dont succeed in football. SO basicaly you motivated me to learn more for my future job(programming, i hope if not football). because here in school you get such easy stuff in math and informatik(wirtschaft) and im bored as f----. thank you so much.

Truth is anyone can become just as educated as someone who spent years of college to become a doctor, lawyer, engineer. Etc.. Without spending a penny. Its smaller than a T calculator and 99% of us have one 😉 Peer reviewed articles are free
Edit: Btw I just handled myself in a Pre-trial case earlier today. My attorney didn’t show and the Honorable wanted to proceed. Well thanks to studying law (for free) the previous couple weeks I simply spoke calmly “Your honor I request adjournment due to not having my attorney present”. Case instantly froze, council met in the judges chamber and I was awarded adjournment

I keep hearing "Do it for free." "Offer to do __ and do it for free." With what money? With what time? Are you suggesting a full time job on top of full time college and everything you just said? Say Joe Schmo is willing to mentor you if you do __ for him and get a plane ticket to the city where he lives for __ weeks? How are you supposed to pay for the plane ticket or the gas, the food, the hotel? Not to mention the time off school? How are you supposed to juggle all that?
Do what you can with what you have right now. God gave you a brain. Pray, meditate and THINK to find the solution. for example, to get a plane ticket....YOU COULD use a cashback card for travel THEN use it to pay EVERYTHING...JUST by signing up to use it, they'll give you enough points to get at least a one way ticket free..BANG..plane ticket solved. Hotel: Find family or a friend or acquitance who lives in the city, ask to live on their couch for a month and pay rent of 25 bucks.
These are solutions I came up with off the top of my head. My point is that YOU have to figure out a way to do it and then have the courage to try it. The interesting places in life have no predetermined route. You have to walk it yourself
Really think this kinda of doubt stops us. Never know if there are people out there willing to help you for nothing.

but yea, decide what you want to do and do it. Dont listen to universities / formal education path unless you need a professional credential. Even when you are in educational system still question it
When I went to school about a million years ago at a urban polytechnic, many of the professors in my major were there because of the union, waiting tenure, as it was well paying jobs. Many didnt even know to teach properly.
One lectured by looking down at the floor the whole session, telling us we wouldn't amount to nothing. Thank god he left to take care of his ailing mother

University helped me seek out the answers I was looking for by forcing me to be curious. Be curious on your own, save time and money without university. Learn how to learn, then you can learn about anything.
I love Germans. The way the brain works is amazing. :)
But what if you don't know what you want to do? Because this sounds amazing but if you have no idea what to do or who to follow or learn from you just dont have any idea.
