BMW Electric Water Pump Bleeding Procedure

  • ►If you have owned or worked on an older BMW with a belt-driven water pump, you might know the pains of bleeding the air out of the cooling system. On newer BMWs with electric water pumps such as those with the N50, N52, N54, N55, S55 engines, they have a self-bleed feature built-in.
BMW's self-bleed feature is exactly what it sounds like, the electric water pump runs to bleed the cooling system all on its own.
Follow along with Gareth as he shows you the few steps to bleed your BMW's cooling system.

Make sure you close the expansion tank before starting the procedure. If the cap is off, it will run for a long time without completing.

You may or may not have to do the bleeding procedure (15 minutes each) multiple times to _really_ make sure all the air is out of the system.
I had an incident where a coolant hose popped off on me while out driving. There was evaporated mist everywhere, and all my coolant came pouring out from underneath and I was left stranded.
Luckily this was in a parking lot, so I immediately parked my car before the engine rose to dangerous temperatures and I shut it off.
My uncle came to pick me up and we shopped for distilled water at a nearby convenience store. We were able to pop the hose back on, fill the cooling system with distilled water, and do a quick bleeding procedure before I carefully drove the car back home.
Now I have oem bmw coolant in it again, mixed 50/50 with distilled water per instructions, but I ALWAYS do 2 or 3 bleeding procedures so I am SURE there's no more bubbles popping.
Haven't had a coolant pipe pop-off on me since.

Certainly good measure to run the procedure more than once!

Just checked the BMW documentation and it says :
    "Bleed cooling system!
    WARNING:
NOTE: Do not open the coolant expansion tank cap during the bleeding procedure. Switch on the lowbeam headlights to perform the bleeding procedure. If the lowbeam headlights are not switched on, the ignition (Terminal 15) will switch off automatically after a certain period of time and interrupt the bleeding procedure.
    1. Connect battery charger.
    2. Switch the ignition on.
    3. Switch on lowbeam headlight.
    4. Set heating to maximum temperature. Take back blower to smallest stage.
    5. Driving experience switch must not be set to ECO PRO!
    6. Press accelerator pedal for 10 seconds to floor. Engine must not be started.
    7. The bleeding procedure was started by pressing the accelerator pedal and takes approx. 12 min. (the electrical coolant pump was activated and switches off automatically after approx. 12 min).
    8. Then adjust fluid level in the coolant expansion tank to maximum.
    9. Check the coolant system for LEAKS.
    10. If the ventilation has to be performed again, deactivate DME completely (remove ignition key for approx.
3 minutes). Then repeat from point 3.
    Close coolant expansion tank."
I'm still not sure if a bleeder valve needs to be opened under the car or if the coolant needs to be filled before the bleed. The instructions say to turn on the low beams so I would connect the battery to a charger just to be sure...

I have a an f30 bmw 320i 2014 and my electric water pump (randomly) turns on after the car is parked and turned off, the problem is that when this happens, the electric water pump never stops and it drains my battery. The only way it temporarily stops is when i open o close a door of thw car. Recently i changed myself the thermostat (using one of your videos) hoping this would fix the problem, but it didnt, and i first realized it would be having this issue because when i started the coolant bleeding process, the electric water pump never stopped, draining again my battery. Do you think i need to replace my water pump? Or is it another problem like an electrical one?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  Před 3 lety +6

Yes. You can do that as well. The N2X and N5X family of engines are not as prone to airlocks and the system is considered self bleeding as the expansion tank is the highest point in the system. It is ultimately easiest to run the electronic self bleeding procedure since the engine is off and it gives you the opportunity to identify possible leaks or connection problems from service work.

      Venting cooling system: Note:
Do not leave the coolant expansion tank sealing cap open during the bleeding procedure.
Ensure that both cooling circuits are filled before starting the automatic bleeding procedure. The bleeding procedure is automatically started simultaneously for both cooling circuits. If the bleeding processes is started while one of the cooling circuit is empty, there is a risk of damage to the coolant pump from running it dry.
Switch on the low-beam headlights to perform the bleeding procedure. If the low-beam headlights are not switched on, the ignition (Terminal 15) will switch off automatically after a certain period of time and interrupt the bleeding procedure.
      1. Top coolant up to the upper edge of the expansion tank. Coolant level may not drop further! No drop in coolant for approx. 1 minute.
      2. Connect battery charger.
      3. Switch the ignition on.
      4. Set heating to maximum temperature. Press Automatic button. Then set the blower to the lowest speed.
      5. FES (driving experience switch) must not be in ECO PRO!
      6. Press accelerator pedal for 15 seconds to floor. Engine must not be started.
      7. The venting procedure is started when the accelerator pedal is pressed and takes approx. 12 minutes.
      8. Refill expansion tank up to top edge immediately after drawing off until empty.
      9. Adjust expansion tank to maximum level at end of bleeding procedure.
      10. Check cooling system for leaks.
      11. Close expansion tank.
      12. If the venting procedure has to be carried out again, allow DME to drop completely (ignition key removed for approx. 3 minutes), then repeat from Point 5

mine wasn't working, my 740li kept turning off although i could hear the pump starting to bleed. soo you have to activate the hidden menu, hold down dash button, then scroll for system test, then hold that down, then it will ask to start and hold that down. car will stay on and the bleeding will commence👌

Yes, but you also risk burning out the electric water pump by running it dry. Alternatively, you could flush the entire system like this, but it would take a long fucking time lol.

    • @diegocajn

If you don’t bleed it, the engine or cooling system could have air trapped, giving you a hot spot that can damage the engine. Sounds absolutely necessary.

Hello, if it sounds like you have air bubbles making their way through your heater core, we would highly recommend bleeding the system again and topping off the reservoir as needed.

  • @l33lvr

Hi, should you top up the coolant before doing this procedure?

    • @dhalsim-1
      @dhalsim-1 Před 9 měsíci

Yes, remove bleed screws and fill expansion tank with coolant until no air bubbles, just coolant comes out of bleed screw holes. Replace bleed screws. Ensure expansion tank is brim full and replace cap. Then you can start this procedure. Air from the system will get trapped in the expansion tank so the coolant level should have dropped when the procedure is finished. You may need a syringe to remove excess coolant from the expansion afterwards.

I tried to activate the procedure but for some reason nothing happens. It's a 2016 320i with B48 engine. Will I be OK to just fill up the system, keep the reservoir cap open and start the engine and let it idle until it's warmed up obviously making sure that the coolant tank has coolant in it all the time?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  Před 2 lety

If you didn't already, you may need to ensure your battery is fully charged, and on a tender, for it to allow the procedure to active. You may be able to bleed it by letting it get up to temp and allowing the thermostat to open, otherwise, that will be causing an air bubble until it opens.

Really weird, I have a 2008 528i and I just installed a new water pump yesterday and tried multiple times to do the bleeding procedure but it just wont do it, the pump works great though because I turn on the engine and i can see coolant shooting a very strong stream but I cant for the life of me get the bleeding process going.... i feel like there is air trapped in my heater core because my heater barely puts out any hot air even after driving 20 miles last night.... never overheated though and level looks proper.
