I've made this video to show people that every soul deserves a second chance.
The pet store saw no chance in him and basically just gave him to me so they wouldn't have to kill him themselves.
I'm sorry for the bad video quality but everything was filmed on my iPhone.
Due to my low budget his first quarantine tank wasn't meant for fish which is why I decided to move him into the 54L tank, which ended up taking up all the space in my dormitory room, so I had to move him again as mentioned in the video.
Willy suffered from:
Swim bladder disorder (SBD)
Worms - which kind I'm not sure
Fin/tail rot
Fungus
Severe starvation
Now he's a happy healthy betta loving every food that I offer and he frequently builds a nest to care for.
He was basically "cured" in less than a month if you don't count the fin that needs to grow back out.
Bought my betta after finding out a male attacked her after he try to mate with her. Found her looking horrible, ...so I took her home. I treated her carefully and with love. She became the most beautiful little fish who became excited every time she saw me come home. I kid you not she would swim in such a way that she looked like she was dancing with glee. If I moved around the room she would follow me. I admit I talked to her as I fed her, changed her water, etc. I loved that little fish...my little Star
it takes people like you to make a difference and this is such a beautiful transformation. Willy is beutiful and i bet hes extremely thankful yu gave him a second chance and a home.

Awe! I've been saving up for this exact reason, so I can rescue poor bettas. It's terrible how some stores treat them :(

Miranda Random It makes me so sad! I’m still just a child right now so I can’t do anything, but when I get older I plan to work at Petsmart another called Petland not just because I love animals but especially to take care of betta fish really well!
Alaska If their sick though most stores will give you a discount or just give it to you for free if you ask. So you take away money from the store, and can still save the betta
Ikr, my betta (his name is lunar and he's a delta tail male betta) was so depressed in his tiny half a gallon divided tank. He only had a moss ball and was hiding behind it the entire time. Note: when he was at the pet shop he was a musky grey with a red tail. When I got him home and acclimated him in his 6 gallon planted,cycled, heated, aquarium with a filter and lots for him to do he perked up soo much. He's now a vibrant navy-silver with dark copper red at the end of his fins. :) He's happy and healthy now, a curious little thing. I'm so glad he got to go to me. He's such a little wander and he's got a proper home.
My betta lived half of his life in a 'tank' smaller than my head. (About the size of my brain) I do not believe he ever had the chance to be a young baby betta. But now he's a very happy, loyal, and loving fish. He has the complete opposite personality of a betta. He is the biggest love bug ever! His 2nd Birthday is soon. And he's getting the best gift ever! A brand new tank! I'm proud of he and how he trusts everyone he meets, despite being looked at only to never be chosen. He's an amazing fish. I love him.

My daughter-in-law got me into the walmart fish rescue a cpl years ago. We pick out the ones in the worst condition & bring them back to health or at least have a nice clean place for their final days. Our local walmart finally stopped carrying fish, thank goodness. Now on to the next Walmart a2 towns over. The little guy I have now is doing great, although he injured his tail but that's under repair

My Betta fish is sick and is barely swimming. I wanna make sure he’s doing alright so I put him in a small tank and clean water with a small heater (Update) He sadly passed away after I’ve had him for almost 4 years. When I found him he was still at the bottom of his tank motionless as he always did. RIP. I know it’s childish as I’m 17 but he was my first pet ever and I never knew what it would’ve like losing a pet.
Just know you did an outstanding job then! Four years shows how well you cared for your betta, sadly he or she most likely died from old age. Keep doing what you're doing and keep your chin up(even if this was 3 months ago)

I'm a grown man. I was 24 when I lost my betta and man it broke my heart. There ain't nothing wrong with grieving because an animal is still an animal.
Four amazing years for that betta, it was his time to go, but you gave him a wonderful life I'm sure.
It isn’t childish. Even those of us much older feel so sad when we care for little creatures, watch them everyday day, and they make us smile. It isn’t easy to lose them. It helps make you a good person that you care.
You are so kind for rescuing this betta. But.....buying a betta from a pet store makes the pet store buy more bettas cause they think, “oh people are buying these bettas, lets continue to get more of them since people like them so much.” Anyways, no hate I still think it’s lovely you take bettas and give them the treatment they diserve.
Actually no matter what you do they will still restock. They truly will only ever stop if it comes to legal issues. So save a life if you can. I know first hand that some pet stores will even throw away healthy bettas if they have been there too long. It’s just how chain pet stores work
I rescued a betta from Wal-Mart and now he is in a 5 gallon and so much more active and so beautiful.

I've been trying desperately to save my daughter's first betta and this really inspired me. As a veterinarian in training I'm kind of ashamed that this is so difficult for me! If it were a cat or dog, I'd know what to do. I could use some help if someone's willing..

I’m glad that someone out there acres for fish. Almost everyone assumes that fish are not important, because they are small and there are a lot of them. But I’m glad to know that there is someone out there that cares. Thank you for rescuing him, he needed that. I appreciate your kind heart, for most people will only walk by the dying ones and take home the healthy ones. I don’t think that is right. Anyways, this planet Earth needs more kind people that are kind to all, like you.

I did the same thing with my betta now he is happy and healthy and never stops swimming in his 5 gallon tank. He’s came a long way
I remember I saw a dwarf platy fish being picked apart by other fish in the store because she was struggling to swim and had two tumors growing around her gills. I let the store owner know and they were going to take it out to kill it. I offered to take it despite the owner telling me it wouldn't live. I wasn't sure if it'd survive or have a happy life but it lived and thrived for a year and half. Which for platy fish is a long time to live for them. I think she lived a happy life and I'm so thankful I came in that day. Thank you for sharing that beautiful story, I'm so happy to see that there's still good people in this world and that betta didn't have to die.
This fish... this beautiful fish... makes me wanna cry. I'm always so ticked off when pet stores dont take care of the fish and animals properly.

What I'd really love to know is if you went back to the store with pictures and news. It's terrible what they put that fish through. That's one of the reasons I love to get to know the owners of the stores I frequent. When I'm looking for a quality pet, it makes it easier to figure out where to go for it and when I am able to rescue, it helps me know which place is in need the most.

This reminds me of a betta that I found at Walmart. He was put in a container with another betta and the other one tore his entire back fin off. We bought him right that second and the Walmart said that he would die on the way home. We got him a huge tank even if he wasn’t going to live for another day we wanted to give him his best life while we could. He lived for a month until he tiered himself out trying to swim while we were gone and died of exhaustion. You could tell he was thankful though while he had a good life. We also got a tiny betta from the pet store and named him small fri (bc baby bettas are called fri) he lived a good four or five months until his swim bladder stopped working and he died. I now have 3 bettas left one of them being ghosty. We got him with a huge gash in his back fin and his dorsal fin had been almost completely torn off but now he is still alive and is a year old. We got ghosty and ruby the same day but ruby died in September. Now we have crow he wasn’t in the worst condition when we got him but his water was barely covering him if he laid down. The water was also so dirty you could barely see him. My mom took him home as fast as possible and he is now a HUGE solid red betta with silver eyes. He is the prettiest one we own. Now you are probably thinking “what about the third one?” Well here is where pinky comes into play. He was smaller than fri when we got him and at first thought he was dead but I scratched on the container and got the littlest bit of a response. So we took it home. The cashier gave us this look like “why tf are they buying a dead betta?” we got home gave him some new water and he was in shock but the next day he was as good as gold. Those three have lived ever since.

Thank you so much for this video my fish has been sick for 5 days with server fin rot and started treatment for 3 days and I had him since September 25 and this gave me hope that my betta will be healthy again soon

Sad to see, when i went to my local walmart, there were 2 bettas in a cup. One had all but its steering fins missing, the other was completely faded of color. The were both males in a small cup. The one with almost no fins left was at the mercy of the other faded one. I when and showed the employee. He probably only saw the almost fin-less one and lowered the price from 4.00 to abouy 1.67. So then i hurried yo get the bettas home and the one with almost no fins was not aggresive whatsoever. It was strange for a male, i found that out after trying to give him feeder fish (extra small rosey red minnows)
Apparently being in that cup for so long caused him to not care about agression as much as he most likely did before(idk this is just a theory). This happend a few days ago and surprisingly they are both active.

Betta shouldn't be fed feeder fish! Maybe try bloodworms?

I’m also saving Bettas.... I already have four. One is in a 2.5 gallon filtered tank, one is in a 7 gallon community tank (bubble bowl), the other two are currently in a 1/2 gallon quarantine tank since one suffered fin rot and is now healing, the last one has just recently gotten fin rot and I’m treating it. I don’t really need a heater because my country is tropical and the temperature is just right for tropical fish like bettas. I plan on saving a few more and just putting them on 1 gallon tanks first. I will also of course provide the needed water changes for all the tanks I have them in. I just recently saved a beautiful halfmoon betta from the fate that the other bettas in a pet store just experienced. Most of them look very sick and are about to die, so I got the healthiest one instead.

I have a betta. His name is Azure. I rescued him from a pet store. He had fin rot. He was also in a tiny aquarium. He is now in a 7.6 gallon aquarium, he has a heater and I cured him from fin rot. He is very happy.
