Barcelona choke again: Over-reliance on Messi costs Barca big vs. Liverpool | Champions League

  • ESPN FC's Craig Burley, Steve Nicol and Alejandro Moreno break down player by player how Barcelona allowed Liverpool to run through them as Lionel Messi and company let a huge advantage in the UEFA Champions League slip away for the second year in a row. The Reds rolled to a 4-0 win as Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic and Arturo Vidal were all over-matched in the midfield and their back line were left to look foolish by Liverpool’s Divock Origi, Sadio Mane and Gini Wijnaldum.

Liverpool outplayed Barça at the Camp Nou too but Messi's brilliance bailed them out which made Valverde to gloss over the serious flaws in his tactics. Very true. Barca have been that way for years when it comes to Messi. Not only that, but they defer to the old guard every year as well. I'm telling you... they need to get a manager that allows the young players a chance to play like Frank Rijkard did. People forget he put Messi on, as well as Iniesta. We need a manager that sees this. Wague, Tobido, Puig, Alena, Malcolm and many others need to be in this team on a regular in order to being that change of pace. A trial by fire so to speak. Malcolm would have been great in this game, but he's not given the chance at all. Semedo doesn't start, but we go with Sergi Roberto (who we are still under the Pep syndrome), who isn't a real RB, but since he has a few great games there seems great for this game. No. We need speed on speed. I'm sorry. In my opinion for a team that's going all out for a goal we needed protection at the back. Just go for it man and get the Messi-dependence stick out of you rear end EV. Not only that, let's get an actual young striker with some quicks to cause problems. I love and enjoy Suarez, but wish we had a striker like Eto'o. I loved him as a striker for Barca. A no-nonsense goal scorer. I know I'm ranting, but it is what it is.

That's like Liverpool playing better or even the same without Salah, Kieta, or Firmino . The players are motivated and they played better. We did well without Messi vs Real Madrid, and Inter home and away. Juventus got Ronaldo and they won less than normal- that doesn't mean he is bad though! Barça's problems were three:
    1. The 4-4-2 system.
Clearly, Barça operates with a 4-3-3 system, and the 4-4-2 has never suited them. It doesn't allow for proper wing play. It's a counter-attacking formation, and Barça are a team that naturally takes the initiative.
    2. Arthur not starting.
Arthur is a player who helps Barça to take the pressure off. He sets the tempo and dictates play, and everything falls in place. But he was on the bench and Barça struggled to gain control of the game.
    3. Ernesto Valverde.
By far, Ernesto is Barça's biggest problem. He sets the team up to contain - an evidence that he hadn't learned from the Roma debacle. He set his team up to defend and offered no real outlet to bring them out of danger. True, Dembélé was injured, but Malcom offers an attacking outlet too. He also started with Roberto at right back despite knowing that Roberto struggled against Liverpool at Camp Nou. Alba was expertly blocked by Trent Alexander-Arnold, but without Semedo, Barça couldn't replicate that Alba-like attack on the right flank. Barça were flat tonight, and they lacked creativity. They also lacked defensive solidity and concentration. It seems that Barça under Valverde are far more reliant on Messi's otherworldly brilliance (which Klopp expertly limited tonight), and they tend to underestimate their opponents greatly.
Messi was determined to bring the big ears to Camp Nou, and he's been by far the best player in the UEFA Champions League this season, but even he can't do it all by himself.

Very true. Valverde simply does not have the balls to do it in Europe. For some strange reason he tries to control games whilst having no intention of keeping the ball. He tries to counter attack with no pace up front. Mentality was the key here. I'm not going to complain about the tactics used by Valverde (even though it was possibly the worst idea) because no matter what the coach applies on the team, the players are supposed to give their best. Barcelona entirely seemed slow and dreadful. The lack of athleticism and speed cost them miserably. I could see Vidal constantly leaving his position to defend against almost every player in Liverpool's midfield because he was ready to give in everything for his team. That's what we needed, Vidal's desperate need of making it to the finals dispite having a 3-0 lead. Unfortunately, he was the only one from Barcelona's side. There was even a point in the match (precisely in the second half right after the 3rd goal was scored) when, Messi desperately attempted to take on Liverpool's World class defence all by himself and he actually would have made it to the goal if only he wasn't brought down forcefully. Liverpool played well but I feel that it only looked that way because Barcelona played their worst. I've seen Barcelona toying against better pressing than what Liverpool had to offer. Now that it's done, I congratulate Liverpool for making it to the finals.
