very good insights here. I was curious as to aftermarket valve bodies on ebay. Might try this on my 04 X3 also with GM 5l40e. There is a theory that solenoid O rings dry out with age causing cold slippage (lost pressure).
Very helpful video. I have a 2003 BMW 325i that gives me a "solenoid 4" error code when I scan the OBD port with a BMW scanner tool. The BMW has the GM 5L40E transmission. Looking to tackle myself once I get up the nerve.
This is exactly the same as the one on the 3.0D 2006 Range Rover And I’m just about to replace it with a refurbished one,, Great video as I was unaware of the torque settings,👍👍👍👍
I have this transmission in my wife's 2007 X3, and intend to overhaul the valve body. I believe that those plastic tubes should be replaced. The rubber gets hard over time and fails to completely seal against the valve body, allowing some fluid to bypass the tube. This would result in less fluid pressure acting on the various clutch packs, possibly causing delayed gear engagement. I overhauled a ZF6HP in my BMW 535xi and it had similar tubes. The old ones had actually shrunk in length.
I noticed another viewer asked where you got those seals. I have the same question. I'm not sure that I should trust aftermarket Ebay parts@@theworkshop6588
What codes were you getting? Does the remanufactured include all of the solenoids or separate? Vehicle doesn't slip and drives fine but gets the P0734 after a few minutes of driving.
Initially it made a lot of chatter noise. Later it gave A code was for transmission overheating. I ended up replacing the trans with a low mileage unit from the junk yard.
@@dodoitdave1346 I did not reuse the valve body. It did fix the shifting issue but something was still slipping which caused overheating. So I replaced the whole transmission.
Hı when i go to hill, upgrade. Car gives error code "transmission fail safe program" and use only 4th shift and im stopping car and then 5 minutes later working normally whats the problem for you thanks
Hello sir, Thank you for the video, I have a similar problem with my 07 cadillac cts. I'd like to know how your vehicle is riding after the fix? And if the valve body you purchased is good quality? If it is, please let me know where I can purchase it from the same seller. Thanks.
It improved the shifting but the transmission had other slipping issues and started overheating. I bought a low mileage trans from a junk yard and replaced it. That’s the problem with these transmissions when one thing goes out it causes other problems.
@@theworkshop6588 Mine jerking in 4-5gear when going up the hill (doesn't stay in 4 or 5, goes back and forth i can say) I thought may be changing valve body kit will help, before I can spend money for transmission. No codes, drives good on straight road after acceleration. What would you recommend? Thanks.

Good luck, I hate working on transmissions. Though the solenoid shouldn't be too hard.

Awesome video, good work!

Good luck. I also had a problem with the torque converter. If I had opportunity to replace it I would. Thanks for your advice.

Where did you buy the 6 plastic tubes?
thanks very helpful
was it making a boom sound when putting it into gears like if the trans mount was bad ?
Did you have to do any reprogramming?

What did you end up with the valve body? Did you use it with the new transmission.
