On "My Car Story" we're at the Carlisle Events in Carlisle PA on 7-12-19.
We're looking at a 1968 Dodge Mr Norms Dart GSS in Dark Racing Green Metallic Paint. The car comes with the “M Code” 440 CI engine.
The car's Owner is Paul Ernst. Paul’s had this car since 2000. He shares the details of this rare car with the “M Code” engine option.
Norm Kraus’s (Mr. Norm) Grand-Spaulding Dodge of Chicago requested a special run of 50 Dodge Darts with the 440-CI 375-horsepower Magnum engine. Since the Dart was already set up for the big block, installing the 440 was an easy proposition, and a run of 50 cars would also qualify them for NHRA Super Stock.
Chrysler pulled 50 cars from the assembly line and sent them to Hurst-Campbell for conversion and each has an “M” code in the VIN, equipped with the 440 and an A727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission, and then shipped to Grand Spaulding Dodge. Mr. Norm substituted the “T” in the cars’ “GTS” designation with another “S”, signifying the GSS (Grand Spaulding Special) model. The 440 GSS Dart was advertised as such, and while the “383” badges were no longer accurate, there was no version of a “440” marker that would fit in their place, so they were left on all the cars.
Hurst-built 50 1968 GSS 440 Darts sold by Mr. Norm which were the only Darts made. Each one is converted by hand, and are among the lowest-production Mopars ever.
In 1969 M-code versions subsequently were built by the factory.

Mr. Norms Grand Spaulding Dodge in Chicago built alot of awesome muscle car's there in the 1960's-'70's. My neighbor (when I was a kid) had a plum crazy 1971 440+6pak Charger R/T from Mr. Norms. It was awesome !

Growing up in the late '60s early '70s, we lived a few blocks from Grand Spalding Dodge. Me and my buddies would hang out and droll over the cars until we got politely herded away. I think even as ten year old kids, we knew we were experiencing history in the making. I'm still a Mopar kid to this day.

Darts are terrible at handling and stopping but when it comes to straight line acceleration you won't find a better acceleration experience. So fun. Thanks for the great memories in seeing this very well done video.

In 1989 I went to Volo, IL, to Volo Auto Sales (now Volo Auto Museum) to look at an AMX. Back then they were known for extra clean, numbers matching muscle cars, and other classic cars. On the end of a row of cars sat a black 1968 GSS Dart, absolutely beautiful. The sales paper said 440 motor, I wasn't familiar with the 68 GSS, but I think I would have bought it on the spot if it wasn't already sold. When I got home I asked my Mopar buddy about it and he said the 68 440 GSS's were sold by Mr Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge. I currently own a Mr Norm 65 Coronet, 426 street wedge, 4 speed. By the way, couple months later I bought an AMX from an ad in an autotrader mag, I still have it.

The Cowl induction set up is just Awesome...
If you've ever driven one or been a passenger, with under Dash "summer doors" open, the air from the Cowl vents is smooth and constant, also helps keep the Front end stable, in my example, allowing Air to travel over the hood to force it down..
My Dart is lower than stock,, but also Stable at speeds over 110mph.. this Cowl intake modification always seemed like a good idea...

I've always wondered why many of the bare-bones super stock style muscle cars in the late 60's had front drum brakes when discs were available. I thought it was just for cost-cutting but now I know it's to avoid the brake drag encountered with discs.

I believe that Norm Kraus aka Mr.Norm built one of these took it to Dodge who’s engineering team had formerly denied that this car could be built. There were some Chrysler big shots and Dodge employees ( those concerned) were red faced when Norm presented this beast. Grand Spaulding refers to their location the corner of Grand Ave and Spaulding on the n.w. side of Chicago. Should have seen their used car inventory. New or used could have bought a Dart at Grand Spaulding with a slant six too. BTW Nickey Chevrolet was bout ten minutes northwest of there.

    Very Kool factory engineering!
For years back in the 80’s, I wanted to build a big block A body.
    Either a ‘68 Dart or a ‘71 Demon.
I never got the car, and back then the only practical way to put one in was to use “elephant ears” motor mounts.
There really wasn’t enough room for the 440 RB, and that’s why the factory only made automatic versions... no room for the z bar.
Amazing that Hurst was able to shoehorn the big 440 in there.
    Beautiful car!

He said the 440 was equipped with the 383 manifolds and oil pan. I wonder if he was referring to just the exhaust or the intake manifold because the RB is a taller engine and maybe hood clearance was an issue.
