On "My Car Story" we're in Canada on 8-9-24.
We're looking at a Prototype 1949 Cadillac Coupe DeVille in Dark Gray Paint. The car comes with the 331 CI V8 engine and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Steve Plunkett. Steve’s had this car since 2012. Steve shares in January 1949 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel General Motors featured a car show called the “Transportation Unlimited” exhibition featuring production and custom vehicles. This car has a factory shortwave two-way telephone with a direct connection to General Motors Headquarters.
ENJOY!

Perhaps everyone wrote an article about this car 10 years ago, but only on 'My Car Story' do we get to experience what it's like to actually hear and ride along in this stunning automobile. This car has moved into my 'Lou's top 10 videos' category! I'm in awe of this Cadillac. Can't get enough of this video Lou!!
Hi Tom (and JudyAnn), Top 10. NICE! Lou
What a fascinating video. Loved all the details, including the motorama photo and the nos matching incorrect engine. Yes Lou, this one I am sure I will be viewing over and over. Just a stunning car.
This is the ultimate unicorn 49/57 Cadillac Coupe DeVille w/ pb+ ps and a direct line to head office. That is "Clout".
Steve is so humble and knowledgeable he is the perfect custodian of this incredible collection.
Thanks for letting us see this.
Hi Scuff, Happy to read "This is the ultimate unicorn" :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you. You're welcome, Lou
The car and its story are both incredible. Wonderful that this car still exists. 😍
Happy to be able to share this one with you.
Lou, how do you do it? You continually raise the bar of what you feature with more and more automobile beauty every video. You are a true automotive visual historian as you go from car to car preserving each for future generations to see. I cannot overstate how important your work is - if someone loves cars, your channel would be a great place to spend days reviewing the best and most beautiful vehicles ever made as you go from automotive generation to another. And, you capture the vehicle's stories through their owners which is just as important as the visual footage. Thanks for what you do, Lou! You are first rate!
Hi ultraviolet tp, "You continually raise the bar of what you feature with more and more automobile beauty every video. You are a true automotive visual historian as you go from car to car preserving each for future generations to see." High praise. Thank you for the many kind words. You're welcome, Lou
Lou has great production and photography. Much of the time the owners are more expert in their cars than an auto historian. This 1949 concept car is more stylish than the 1950 production car in my opinion. That rear is really space age , a great piece of automotive history. A beautiful restoration by the perfect owner for this classic.
Beautiful Cadillac - and great to see such a rare classic!
Thanks Lou and Steve!
Hi Jeff, Happy to share this "rare classic!" with you. My pleasure sharing this one of one with you. You're welcome, Lou
NOW THAT IS CLASS. what an exquisite automobile and i love the color combination. THANKS LOU.
Hi sly 23, High praise. You're welcome, Lou
@@loucostabile THANKS LOU. keep these great videos coming my friend.
@@loucostabile and by the way lou. my name is curtis. take care my friend.
I agree, Lou. The motor sounds great! As with most concept cars, the actual production vehicle seldom looks as good. Its wonderful that Steve took you for a drive 👍
Hi Mike, Happy to be able to share this "concept car" with you :-) I agree, nice Steve takes me for a ride, Lou
Damn, what a gorgeous automobile!
High praise.
Lou, you have out done yourself! This is a classy and stylish rendition of the ultimate car! Classy and stylish like you. Mr. Plunkett is very fortunate to hold ownership of this classic "Dream" car..thanks for featuring it Lou!

Hi Spencer, "Craftsmanship that claimed “The Standard of the World”" I agree. My pleasure sharing this car with you, Lou
Thanks again lou for finding us such a rare gem. Beautiful Cadillac
You're welcome Thomas.
Amazing! Coupe or Convertible, and a car phone, too. This Cadillac has it all. It's another fantastic and rare car from Mr. Plunkett's collection. Thanks for showing us one many of us have never seen, Lou!

Rich, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
Fantastic video, thanks; we kept an early Fifties Sedan de Ville in our driveway and my seat was atop the rear armrest. Great memories
Hi Steve, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
Always thought even to this day that the 1948 and 1949 Cadillacs were outstanding looking cars.
That also includes the 4dr models.
Happy to read the 1948 & 1949 Cadillacs are good looking cars for you :-)
Yet another amazing automobile. Steve has some remarkable collection of historic and rare cars. Quite frankly Lou, if it wasn't for your channel, the viewing public would never see these fine automobiles. Thank you.
Hi Kevin, Happy to read you enjoy this "Amazing automobile" :-) My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome, Lou

Beautiful video presentation once again! Man those Harley Earl years at GM were created some amazing automobiles! This coupe Deville is a real sweetheart. Thanks again for all you do Lou!

Lou This 1949 Cadillac was your all time best episode. I thought yesterday’s 1954 Buick Special couldn’t be beat but words can’t describe how beautiful this car is. Since this man has the other 1949 Cadillac would love to see a video on that car if possible. Thanks for sharing all of these beautiful classics cars.

What an amazing car! Amazing collection as well. 🎉

Amazing car and incredible story...(his secretary drove the car in CA until the engine wore out). My mind was already blown hearing all the history, but when you got to the "Handie-Talkie"..well my mind practically exploded. Thank you Steve for restoring and sharing this car with the world. Thank you Lou for spotlighting Steve's amazing cars. BTW my wife wants a ride so she can use that lip-stick and powder!
Hi Charles, Happy to read this mind blowing car with you :-) My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome, Lou
You always present the best 👌
Thanks Lou 👍
High praise. You're welcome Gary.
I'm glad this car has been preserved for posterity. The 1957 Eldorado engine was bored out to 365 CID (in 1956) and produced 325 hp. - twice that of the original 331 V8 of 1949.
Hi Michael, Happy to read you are glad this car is still around. Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
Well thank you for reading all these books to me when the car is sitting right there. Amazing!
You're welcome Eric.
You won't see this on any other channel Lou. A stunning unicorn vehicle. A true classic that aged very well 75 years later.

I think this prototype looks better then the actual car. I think the design on the back window looks much cleaner. I'm glad that it survived and in good hands. Thanks for sharing this car Lou! Great video!
Hi Zach, "I think this prototype looks better then the actual car." NICE! My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome, Lou
At least he is willing to drive his cars on the road instead of it only moving when it is pushed into and out of a trailer to its spot at some fancy car show
Nice when you cand go for a ride in them

I saw a feature on this car some years ago but it is SO WORTH IT to see it again. Thankyou, thank you, thank you, Lou!!!🤩
Hi Ed B, Happy to read you enjoy seeing this car again :-) You're welcome, Lou
Wow, what a find! I'm a fan of the Motorama shows and have been seeing pictures of it for years! Good job. Along with a Buick and Olds, these cars started the two-door hardtop craze!
Interesting tidbit - as mentioned, these cars were first referred to as "Hardtop Convertibles" because they were made to look like a convertible with the top up. When pillarless four-doors and station wagons started to appear a few years later, the "convertible" part of the name was dropped for obvious reasons. Thereafter, pillarless models were simply called "hardtops" vs. "sedans" which had a floor to roof B pillar.
Hi Pauley, Happy to share the details of this car with you :-) Lou
Thanks Lou and Steve.
You're welcome Mike.
Another unbelievable car with a great story! Every part of this Coupe DeVille prototype is beautiful. The detail that really caught my eye is the view of the interior chrome window trim as seen in the driving part - 20:54 - gangster badass cool. A+
Hi soyounoat, High praise. Lou

It was a different period of time when General Motors company put on the annual General Motors Motorama show from 1949 to 1961. It is interesting to see one of only few 1949 Cadillac Coupe DeVille concept cars that was on display at the very first Motorama show.
Hi David, Thank you for viewing, sharing, and happy to be able to share this car with you, Lou
Amazing car, designed by Harley Earl. I first heard about this car back in the 1970s, in Hemmings Motor News, and it was also featured in SIA (Special Interest Autos) magazine. This was the prototype for the 1950 Cadillac Coupe de Villw production cars.

Hi Dan, Happy to share this one with you. The other one is being worked on. Hopefully in the future, Lou
Thanks for sharing! This is easily the best-looking post-war Cadillac 2 door, ever. GM should have more closely followed the styling lines including the longer wheelbase in their production models.

Love the car! Love the story! You can tell it was different than the production car. I didn't like the step sill molding, and apparently Cadillac didn't either as they didn't keep it on the production. It kind of looks as if pieces are missing. Maybe if they had put it all the way across. But it's a prototype. There were other features, like the roof that looked fantastic as well as the front and the rear of the car. Loved the script on the car too! The interior was flawless and elegeant. Really Beautiful! Really elegant. Love The History!!

Did you notice that the Limo is still pretty much 1947 Caddy styling? Remember, Chevrolet always had OHV engines, which included an OHV V8 decades before. Wow! A 1957 Caddy Eldo engine. It also had a few more cubes than the original 331. lol
Hi Automated Electronics, Thanks for viewing and sharing what you notice, Lou

The body of this vehicle is actually based off of the ‘49 Fleetwood Sixty Special. 1949 was the first year Cadillac had used the 133” wheelbase that was ONLY meant for the Sixty Specials from 1949 to 1976. With the exceptions of 1950-53 and 1959-64.(1950-53 60S had a shorter 130” wheelbase, but still longer than the 62 series lineup, which was 126” until 1954. The entire lineup for 1959-60 went back to the 130” from 133 on the 60S and 129.5 on the rest, and all 1961-64 lineups had 129.5” wheelbases. The 133” returned for the 1965 Sixty Special and new Fleetwood Brougham, and left permanently upon the downsized 1977 lineup.) aside from the details in parentheses, this is why the motorama car was actually longer than the production vehicle. Which was based entirely off of the 62 convertible, with the exception of the roof.

Steve answers honestly with a flat "no" when asked if the Dream Car drives like a dream, lol. I could see there was some play in the center of the steering and he had to keep that big steering wheel in constant back & forth motion to keep the car straight at moderate speed. That big steering wheel was intended for a car without power steering. With that car having power steering added, that would make its parking lot manners better but it would make it more difficult to feel where the center is when the car is at highway speed. You wouldn't be answering text messages on your smart phone on the highway that car, even handling that old car phone in the dash would have been a task. All the same if I had a chance to get behind the wheel I'd do my best to drive it like a dream come true, with both hands on the wheel!
Hi onemoremisfit, Thank you for viewing and sharing how you'd drive this one :-) Lou
Production 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitans also had one piece curved windshields. All 1949 GM cars had curved windshields but split in two halves.
