    Look & Listen: Cambodian Art and Dance of the Divine Serpent, Sophiline Cheam Shapiro, dancer/choreographer, with curator Emma Natalya Stein
    Explore the symbolism of the legendary serpent deity, the naga, as it has long been expressed in art across South and Southeast Asia and in Cambodian classical dance. See how the naga is depicted in sculptures, royal adornment, and ritual objects representing the serpent’s many positive roles as a bridge connecting the human and divine worlds. Watch classical Khmer (Cambodian) dance that embodies the aesthetic of the serpent and tells stories of the naga’s actions in the world, accompanied by Khmer court music.
    Our guides will be dancer and choreographer Sophiline Cheam Shapiro and curator Emma Natalya Stein.
    Sophiline Cheam Shapiro is founding director of the Khmer Arts Academy and was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts (the United States’ highest honor in the traditional arts). She has both studied and taught at Cambodia’s Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh. Cheam Shapiro is also a graduate of UCLA’s World Arts and Cultures Program and has expanded the possibilities of her dance form to address modern themes. Her many original choreographies have been performed at Muziektheater in Amsterdam, China Conservatory of Music in Beijing, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, The Joyce Theater in New York, Dans Festival in Singapore, and Schönbrunn Palace Theater in Vienna. She last appeared at the Freer and Sackler in 2019.
    Emma Natalya Stein is assistant curator of South and Southeast Asian art at the Freer and Sackler. Her recent exhibitions include Power in Southeast Asia and Prehistoric Spirals: Earthenware from Thailand.

    Unfortunately, so many Thai people keep complaining about how Khmer stole Thai culture, in my opinion, both Thai, Lao, Khmer used to be in one Empire, which is the Khmer Empire during the 11th to 14th century when the Thai (Siam) invaded the citizen of Khmer people. Yes, Khmer culture was influenced by the Thai, but the dress, headpiece, and dances are entirely the opposite. Also, from my research, the Khmer dance originated in Cambodia during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Thais had transported a part of the Khmer court and dancers to Ayutthaya and adopted the Khmer dance tradition. However, they developed it in their own manner during the succeeding centuries. The result is present-day Thai dance. So, overall, the dance and music are from Cambodia.

      With a little research, there is so much information that we do have.
      Funan = indigenous tribes of mon-khmer 5th-2nd BC (no prasat were built yet)
      Khmer = India Brahma/ mon-khmer tribes 1st century
      Burma = India / Nepal / Tibetan / China / Mongolia / mon-khmer 8th century
      Thai = Tai ( southern china / old Taiwanese island ) / Burma/ mon-khmer 10th century
      Laos = Thai / Mongolia northern China / mon-khmer 13th century
      This is why we are so much alike. Maybe we all did built it together but got lost throughout the centuries due to the multiple kingdoms and leaderships. But they all link back to khmer and old Khmer. How can Khmer copy thai when Burma is older than thai. Burma is not going around spreading false information. The ancient siam were diffidently khmer blood. Somewhere down the line the Tai/Dai, which is a minority of China came in to settle where is Thailand is today. Little by little the Khmer bloodline vanish, therefore they no longer consider the bloodline of the Khmer blood. This is where the confusion and conflict started since the 15th century.

    I also need to mention that there is a Thai user who kept replying to every Khmer-related video, saying, "Thai is original, Khmer is copying." over and over again, which I found very funny how they have a lot of time commenting on people's replies. I even like how they don't respond back to me as well- :o

      The culture vultures are extremely restless, and they cannot tolerate seeing Khmer surpassing them in any ways. They are relentless and have resorted to all pathetic means, in trying to make the assertion that they are the originator of "Khmer culture". They're fixated on the period in history, when Cambodia was in the state of decline to pushed forth the narrative that Siam had influenced us. But in reality, they had borrowed, assimilated, and later modified it to their "Siam style". Truth of the matter is that, they are threatened by the potential of others because they know the truth. Since it's in their nature to be very vindictive, just can't ceased with the arrogance and st¢pidity... PERIOD!
