Another advantage to the torso or leg rotation is that it can squat to pick something up with the knees backward or sideways and out of the way of the item being lifted.
All of this double jointedness is going to be a major time saver once these things get deployed. I am always amazed how much extra efficiency a good work study engineer is able to squeeze out of even the most basic process. Progress is going to be amazing once the Time and Motion guys really get to grips with the new possibilities.

I think Optimus and this Robot have their unique qualities and both will be great for their respective purposes.

We used to talk a lot about uncanny valley with early chatbots. Are we going to have an extended period of "creepy kinematics" as we all get used to contortionist robots and the way that some of these new motions instinctively make us wince?
I would hope Atlas II gets only the most cutting-edge AI for embodying. Embodiment? He already walks with more confidence and vigor than Optimus or Figure 1.
If that thing gets millitary usage, we're doomed

New Atlas is head and shoulders above and beyond Optimus. This bot has super human mobility. Tesla's bot is old generation as of this AM.
Optimus is going for a minimalist approach, and manufactureability. The New Atlas max8mizes mobility, and shows that Boston Dynamics have learned thing during their long history.
I would think that Tesla has the advantage in energy efficiency, price, and above all in brain.
But this will be interesting when we learn about Boston Dynamics AI capability.
I suspect that the New Atlas can't do those movement in real life. It's likely just scripted movements. They have to get that functionality in the real world by more AI learning. I've haven't seen anything about that from them, so I expect they haven't got it.
The only thing atlas has over Optimus is its contortionist abilities.

Why do you need those capabilities? The main issue is affordability and mass production whilst being generalisable and being able to do useful work. Last I checked, you don't need to be a contortionist to work in a factory or do housework.

The vast library of science fiction will be a treasure trove for the current generation of robot designers. Earlier authors imagined so many variations that were simply dismissed at the time because they were not feasible in terms of engineering. Now that "we have the technology" it will be interesting to mine all the pulps and the Golden Age to see what crazy options might possibly exist for our future robot overlords. ;-)

I love days when a significant new bot video drops! BD sure kept this baby under wraps. The new Atlas looks pretty tough, like it could take the other bots in a brawl. Love to see the super flexibility in motion since that will give it some nice advantages over the other bot companies. The real estate in the bot bodies is starting to be optimized, and it will be important to take advantage of every square inch. So if they moved a lot of stuff into the normally unused head space, that makes a lot of sense, and cooling should be enhanced up there. It definitely looks and sounds like a clunky factory bot, so 1X still appears to be the only company going after the home bot market. Main disappointment on the new Atlas is the primitive looking forearms, and the crude, claw like hands.
Definitely curious what is up with the hands.
I wonder if adding some poly bushings or washers would help with the clunky-ness.
Probably a problem they can fix at some point.

Thank you! Good analysis. Great that you are comparing features across multiple humanoid robotic platforms. Double-jointed limbs give Atlas more degrees of freedom and extension than normal humans. Really innovative.
I love the "face" they chose. Reminds me of the robot face from the new Lost in Space mini-series.

It might be able to work like that, but it's probably more of a UI thing than actual lighting. This is likely the platform they will build off of for a production atlas so human interaction will now be a priority factor. An expressive light ring is a good, simple choice

Interesting that the "new Atlas" isn't limited to human movements.
We could call this "a first principles" humanoid. Not just a human copy!
Atlas vs Optimus in the gladiators arena! who would win?
I'd probably go with Atlas. Teslabot looks like a pretty boy that can't take a punch and would fall over. Atlas would pull some quick reverse moves on Optimus and then smash it with those massive claw fists!
@@JMeyer-qj1pv I doubt it. I see Optimus downloading Kung fu (just like Neo) and hitting very hard, very quickly while Atlas is still trying to execute its next programmed command.
The more interesting question is, which robot will be better with precisely controlled manual work, these are the higher paid jobs. I would say at the moment Optimus looks much smoother, but Atlas with NVIDIA as a partner is for sure a robot to have an eye on and with the potential to become a market leader. We will see, the race just started......
I think Optimus would try to exploit Atlas’ double jointedness for sexual purposes. 😂
What can optimus even do?
Longterm it makes a lot of sense to have a much higher degree of motion than humans, ai will advance further and can make propositions, how the task shown by a human can be executed faster or more efficient. Take for example screwing something in (like a light bulb for example) a wrist that can turn indefinitely would have a significant advantage. Everybody doing some handcraft work knows the situation where you get tired, because you have to turn your wrist, let go, turn the wrist back regrip the object and turn again. There is no valid reason why a robot should not exceed our capabilities besides safety, but for sure most companies will neglect the aspect that humans should be able to overpower a humanoid robot.
Maybe this will lead to a greater examination of what human bodies can really achieve. It would be interesting for example to try and replicate the Harvard study on Lamas who can regulate their body temperature at will. If these bots are going to have special unique abilities, then maybe we should explore our own innate abilities some more.

Boston Dynamics was and will continue to be "so far ahead of everybody". To claim it's only R&D and it shouldn't count is comical. To have hydraulic actuators, motors and all of it to perform as it has is unbelievable. This alone is an amazing foundation for the next generation bot. This bot here owes everything to that hydraulic beast.
What Scott was saying about bots needing to do a shuffle step when stopping moving, I noticed when this Atlas walks towards the camera and stops, it looks like it's not doing any shuffle steps there
The antenna looks like a nod to CNC machines, I would guess it's an indication of when the robot is active, like an indication for further instruction, or to stay clear as its working.
Atlas is wearing metallic SHIN GUARDS !!

I for one cannot wait to see them use contorionism to avoid tackles and interceptions. It is going to be incredible to watch. I am really looking forward to seeing all the new 'move 37s' that AI comes up with for these bots.

I wonder how they keep the electrical connection on the joints that spin 360 or more as wires would just snap.
the antenna might be there because of the main electronics being encased in the metal body. just like how metal phones have antenna lines on the outside

As ab electronic design engineer I would prefer a decent antenna in a factory environment. And I was wondering, why not two? We have at least two for our routers. An it would give it a pair of ears. Maybe having the antenna visible was a message saying this is designed for a factory environment.
Is it not better to off load as much as possible in the early stages, and put up extra routers around it?
They could put some Optimus Prime type of antennas and that would look AWESOME!!
This was easy to see, and I made this comment on CNET's video yesterday. That they are sunsetting Atlas for a new, electrically actuated humanoid.

Can you explain how the hip actuators are configured? It seems that both the hip extension and hip abduction actuators are weirdly small. Especially the abductor seems almost non-existent (is it in the joint?) Usually large actuators are used in the knee and the hip.
That's because these morons are pushing a fake video of what they want to build. This is a 100% fake video. Look at the textures and movements and no noise and where's the power, and like you said, where's all the parts??? I can't understand why these so-called experts are thinking this is real. There is no other video of this fake robot. That says it all. But look close, you can' see the horrible textures on everything, even the walls are off.
Their preview video looks like a sci-fi horror movie scene.

To avoid wrapping cables I wonder if they are using slip rings in the joints for electric connections.
Its not always needed if you are not doing free unlimited 360 rotations and there is no good reason to do it on robots like this one
Did they completely get rid of the hydraulic actuators?
To me it looks like 4 fingers.
There is something that looks like a thumb.
Instead, it seems like one joint has become shorter.
What surprised me the most was that it stood still.
They appear to stand still and not move their legs until they begin to walk.
Although it does not provide movement of the spine, it appears to be fully usable in various industrial fields.
It is all about the hand and finger dexterity.
Might be coming soon!
This new version is very good. It's the sort of thing you can say you'll base on to get more life like version. At least among other things they should continue development with the movement.
Centaur style body would be nice also. so a spot with the legs and the human top

If the batteries and much of the intelligence are in the torso and the joints allow 360 degree motion, there need to be a number of slip rings or rotating transformers to power limbs. Comm can easily be done with rotary optics.

1. One big analysis i deduced was that the robot was flat on the surface, but managed to bring it self up effortlessly besides all the anatomical rotatios etc.
In the long term, I thing a Ligament & tendon approach will win out, over actuators.Look at how smooth and light 1X's' EVE bot', movements are.... I think their 'NEO bot', in development, will be impressive.
Extra range of motion requires more structural strength in other directions which means more weight everywhere. I would assume.

I am so glad to see Boston Dynamics joining the humanoid robot race with this amazing robot. Figure 01, Sanctuary AI, 1X technology, Unitree Robotics and many other have shown us their amazing technology. I wonder when we will see anything like it from Optimus. Tesla radio silence on Optimus is strange. Hopefully, they can catch up.
It kinda makes sense that they would join after all they have been developing the original atlas robot for awhile.

Tesla have to keep things under wraps for quite a while because the Chinese are copying Elons technology faster than he can advance it. Haha
@@georgevigil7001 The other robotics companies don't seem to fear the Chinese and they are doing very well. Maybe Elon should start copying the Chinese technology. Unitree Robotics is made in China and it is the fastest humanoid robot in the world.
First thought was that Tank Vacuum cleaner is clever and scary.
Re: battery placement, wouldn’t a relatively heavy battery in the torso adversely affect the center of gravity?
Thus making it less stable. If the batteries were somehow designed fit in the space of say a human femur and have 2 batteries as opposed to one its stability would dramatically improve.

Heavy batteries in legs would be an issue on its own, especially when it does allot of walking. It would need to constantly lift those heavy batteries. While it would help with stability its not a perfect solution for this issue. And in general robots are already quite stable, bigger issue is for them to get up than to not fall down.

Note the continuous motion of the movements that are independent of other motions. All other bots seem to do only one movement at a time.
The rise from the floor is fantastic. Most others have problems getting up (or can't). This is important as bipeds are easy to tip or trip. They are basically unstable, as are humans (in more ways than dynamically).
Walking is much smoother and more confident.
Yeah this robot is tuned really good for those multi-movements. (Not sure the actual term) Lots of promise here for sure.
@BrighterwithHerbert perhaps downloading any potential video you'll need for a show at the highest resolution and frame rate would give you the best experience during a show

I know this sounds off the wall but how would this robot effects manga art work? Just about all of the manga based their robots on body armor. Even Leonardo Di Vinci used armor for his robot. This could prove interesting for future stories.

It reminds me of something from irobot.
It shows the amount of work and understanding they have put into the thought of how to produce a more agile robot. It's much further along in it's movements and speed than most of the other bots. But there are reasons they focused on showing the fancy tricks of getting up and reversing direction and nothing about them sorting or picking things up. Lots of acrobatics but NO work shown. The have a good start but they aren't really good at doing much yet. Great PR but it shows that they are far behind in what their bot can do.
It’s almost like the have the engineering and physics just about locked down but they need the software piece.
Partnership with Tesla would catapult them into the future much faster.
This is already better than tesla bot in terms of hardware.
I wouldn’t say it like that… They differ. As Scott said it doesn’t look like it’s not heavy. BD uses bigger actuators. This could have the effect of more practicability for heavy tasks. Tesla’s Bot may have a totally different approach of use. Which actually is a good thing speaking of monopoly and so on.

5 years is a stretch. I think they’re in a good place but they’ve been at it for 30 years.
Tesla nowhere quite as long and mathematically, Tesla will surpass BD fairly quickly.

Something all of these bots seem to have in common is no butt. I would think that the butt is significant area where batteries can be placed. Along with making bots look more humanoid.
