I was on the crew of this production - one of the best theater experiences ever. I'm so sorry we no longer have Gregory Hines around. It was my second show with him and he was a gentleman and a real star.

After one of the performances on Broadway, my mother got to meet Mr Hines outside of the theater. My mother told Mr Hines that the day of the performance was also her birthday. He got the cast to sing Happy Birthday to her outside of the theater . Mom walked in the door late that night, and she was jumping up and down.

As I walked out of the theater from Jelly's Last Jam I was very perplexed. Everyone knew that Hines was a magnificent dancer and fine actor...but in this show, he sang his heart out and I could not understand why he was never a major recording artist. This show was one of those very rare theater experience...where a great star is allowed to shine and show off their arsenal of talent. And his leading lady!!!!!!! Tonya Pinkens. The superlative has not been created yet to describe what it's like to see her on stage.

I saw this show in December 1992. Will never forget Gregory's amazing performance. Nearly thirty years later, smile when I think about how lucky I was to see this show. At the time, a last minute decision, considering all of my NYC theater options.
Thanks for posting this video, so I can see a bit of the show again!

Half of the Broadway shows this coming season have all black or predominantly black casts and every new play except for one is written by black playwright!

Maybe I dont get theatre...butbits a shame that every Tyler Perry Play was recorded and is available in a value pack at Wal Mart, the Lord of the Dance the same, some others can think of....but But Jellys Last Jam and Bring N Da Funk Bring N Da Noise...if you didn't catch it 8n the 90s on Broadway or the limited tours...well you're just shot out of luck. At least record the final curtain call....make money on it once the run is over. Stories people need to know, history the community can benefit from knowing.....lost to those who aren't into theater.......but every damn Tyler Perry play is preserved in perpetuity? Just dont get it.

'In'-sanity is 'In'-herited. You get it from your father and the joy/luck club. They want you to give it all away to the American pie, son.
