  • I will show you how to clean and maintain your flute, and make an inexpensive cleaning tool from a piece of brass rod.
spiritworldflutes.com Artisan crafted Native American style flutes and shamanic rattles.
    Materials used:
3/32" diameter 36" long brass or aluminum rod (available online or at craft/hobby stores)
Avocado oil (moisturizing skin oil available online or at grocery/health food stores)
T-shirt material (scrap material, and also sold as painter's cleaning rags)
.24" by 12" Pipe cleaner (spiral chenille stems available online or at craft/hobby stores)
Flute wax (available from my website)
micro fiber towel (available online or in stores)
    Tools used:
    Fine point permanent magic marker
    Ruler
9" needle nose pliers (9"pliers work well for bending the rod--smaller pliers are difficult to bend wire, and not recommended.)
Metal cutting pliers (if your needle nose pliers do not cut metal, or use a rotary cutting tool.)

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings... but Avocado oil can also turn rancid. Always check with the maker of a flute for care instructions.

Avocado oil that is used for cooking can turn rancid, and that is why I recommend using Avocado oil that is used as a skin moisturizer. It is very stable. Tree nut oils that are also used for skin moisturizer is also a good choice, because they are stable also. It is a great idea to check with the flute maker for care instructions. Some flute makers are no longer making flutes, and may not be available for flute care advice.

why do people decide to use the oil instead of a finish? Does the oil make it look nicer?

Hi, the oil I use in the video is to clean our breathe residue out of the flute. Most all of the flutes made by flute makers are finished with some type of wood finish, and depending on the type of finish the avocado oil will help to keep the wood from drying out. I use a natural non toxic finish on my flutes that I seal inside and outside. This type of finish is very moisture resistant. I use the avocado oil on my flutes to just clean them.

Lee Westover ohhhh okay. I just bought my first flute last week and have just been trying to figure out how to take care of it. I know my flute has some sort of water proof seal on the inside and outside but the people who made it told me to not use the oil with it so I was confused.
