  • A flight of American B-25 Mitchell bombers are intercepted on a raid over Europe by Messerschmidt Me-262 fighters. This video takes you through what it was like to be the German fighter tasked with meeting the American bombers! This German Pilot is forced to bail out after taking heavy damage. This video was made using the IL-2 Sturmovik Combat Flight Simulator Great Battles series. (Kuban, Stalingrad, Moscow, Bodenplatte).

    Terrible tactics here… The Me262's advantage is speed and thus repeated high to low slashing attacks make far more sense than just moseying along behind a bomber as a target for his rear gunner!

    Lol , some more historical stuff for u... The Me 262, also known as the 'Schwalbe' or 'Sturmvogel', was a feared enemy. The reason for this lay in addition to their considerable speed in their heavy armament. Equipped with four MK 108 'Kurzgerät' machine cannons, two of which were placed one above the other in the slim bow of the Me 262, it was extremely effective armament for aerial combat. These very compact cannons with a caliber of 3 cm were developed by the Rheinmetall weapons company specifically for fighting bombers. The 'short device' fired 660 3cm grenades per minute and, due to its low muzzle velocity, was adjusted to the relatively short range of 450 m. A direct hit with a projectile from the MK 108 tore a 1.75 square meter hole in the paneling of an aircraft. One hit should crash an enemy fighter, three hits a bomber. In addition to this heavy armament, from March 1945 the fighters were equipped with 12 R4 / M missiles each with 5kg warheads under the wings. The 9th squadron of JG 7 flew the first live use of this new weapon on March 18, 1945. It fired twelve rounds of rockets into the bomber formations, with eight kills reported. The Relfex Revi 16B was used as the aiming device for both weapons. An FM transceiver system of the type FuG 16 ZY was installed for radio communication. Combined with the same system and switchable with the 'ZF-FT' switch, a ZVG-16 destination flight receiver with a fixed loop antenna positioned transversely to the flight direction was installed. The automatic detection device FuG 25 was used to orient the ground control centers. JG 7, set up on November 19, 1944, was the largest and with around 200 confirmed kills the most successful Me 262 unit of the Luftwaffe.

      @noor mobashir sami The data are from German www.luftarchiv.de/ and I have only translated them into English. It is the historically and technically most exquisite archive of the Luftwaffe in World War II. The archive on the use of man and material by the German Air Force in World War II. Unfortunately it is only written in German, but with a good translation program, those who are really interested in the Luftwaffe in WWII will find a wealth of knowledge that is more detailed and true than any other! Me-262's could not operate from overgrown tall grass fields like this. Ingesting grass or foreign object damage would have destroyed the axial flow turbojet Junkers Jumo 004 turbines - particularly as they were made from stainless steel, rather than chromium alloys that were needed, but not available. The other consideration is both jets and the Walter rockets of the Me-163 would set a grass field on fire in summer, and the scorch marks, once photographed by Allied reconnaissance planes, would result in the bombing of the area to try to stop the jets.

    That's right. However, you should not ignore an approach from behind a bomber formation even at high speed. Dozens of "tail gunners" were able to take you under fire with their Browning M2 twin machine guns .50 BMG caliber (12.7 × 99 mm). The large Allied bomber formations, which were protected on the one hand by strong defensive armament and on the other by long-range escorts, became a challenge that could no longer be overcome for conventional day hunting with propeller fighters approaching frontally. Due to the high speed of the Me 262 (speed difference to the bombers about 400 km / h, to the escort fighters more than 100 km / h) and the very strong armament (only a few well-placed hits from the four MK-108-30-mm- On-board cannons from Rheinmetall were enough to destroy a heavy bomber), many pilots saw an opportunity to do their job again. Since the defense of the Reich had increasing difficulties in training enough pilots for aerial battles against bombers and their escort fighters, the RLM developed the plan to fight the bomber fleets on their own bases. Colonel Steinhoff tried to change Hitler's mind. Hitler did not want to hear about it and issued an order from the Fuehrer: "With immediate effect, I hereby forbid talking about the Me 262 jet aircraft, except about the fastest or lightning bomber". So he allowed the construction exclusively as a high speed bomber. However, this did not lead to any practical use, since the 262 was planned as a fighter: The acceptance of a bomb load of 1000 kg in front of the front center of gravity meant that two of the four automatic cannons in the nose of the fuselage and the refueling of the front fuel tanks were not required. In addition, the pilot first had to “fly off” fuel for at least 40 minutes in order to produce a trim position suitable for throwing. Nevertheless, the bombing remained critical: Immediately after the bomb locks were triggered, the machine became so tail-heavy that a sudden pitching moment around the transverse axis set in, which not infrequently led to structural damage to the wings in the area of the engine nacelles. Furthermore, due to the high speed of the launch, combined with a lack of aiming equipment, the probability of being hit was low; Messerschmitt's test pilot Fritz Wendel, who accompanied the jet fighters during these troop tests, noted this very clearly in his reports. Because of these problems, the maximum bomb load of 2 × 500 kg was not usually carried when bombing, but the far less problematic equipment of 2 × 250 kg, so that the machine was less tail-heavy. The amateurish “Führer's order” was all the more incomprehensible because the Arado Ar 234 was already a powerful tactical bomber that was able to perform these tasks much better. However, recent research shows that Willy Messerschmitt himself was the cause of this decision, which was apostrophized as the “tragedy of German air armament”, because he introduced Hitler to this idea in June and September 1943 for reasons of power politics. The approximately 10 squadrons that were equipped with Me 262s were used too late and too seldom against the incoming bomber formations of the Allies. The blatant shortage of aviation fuel marked the end of the German Air Force. Although in 1945 the Luftwafffe had put over 800 Me 262s into service, most of them remained on the ground. And the few aircraft from the squadrons with Me 262 that were put into service could not achieve much. JG 7, which was set up on November 19, 1944, was the largest and, with around 500 confirmed kills, the most successful Me 262 unit of the Luftwaffe. It did not have a ejection seat why'd do you think everyone who survived bailing it had injuries from getting slapped by the tail

    • @colinkelly5420
      @colinkelly5420 Před 3 lety +1

      No, which resulted in the ME262 being something of a difficult aircraft to get out of in an emergency. Beyond the KIA numbers, a fairly large number of pilots who did bail out of their ME262s struck the tail on the way out, often badly wounding them.

    Why do you all CONSISTENTLY have planes and even jets now taking off in knee high cornfields? I'm not an aviation expert, but I DO know that you are going to need a runway to take off.
