I saw Dodie’s tweet where she said that she wanted someone to give her a kitten, and since Dodie has been down recently, I thought this would be fun ^_^ I was really hoping she would be able to keep him in her flat, but the landlord won’t let her :( however the kitten will visit her often hopefully whenever Tom or myself heads up towards London, or whenever Dodie asks for him

Reminder to get the age of cat that suits you. Younger cats can have their personalities shaped. Older cats are more experienced and can often be more sweet. It depends on the family.

are you sure maybe dodie couldn't convince the landlord by explaining her owning a cat as part of therapy? because i can tell having a cat will seriously help dodie's wellbeing, and therapy pets can have special privileges i think!

Hannah Travelbee but surely her flatmate would be lenient in some way? i know plenty of people with cat allergies who, with some control, are just fine in the presence of cats. i'm sure it varies, but if the allergy isn't too bad, i'm sure they'd agree that dodie's mental wellbeing is more important.

If dodie gets him licensed as an emotional support animal wouldn't she be able to keep him??
I'm not sure what the laws are in the UK for that. That would be a great fix, but her flat mate is also allergic to cats.
There's a lot more to it than that, you can't just claim for him to be an emotional support animal and dodie possibly isn't classed as being severe enough to need one. If the landlord didn't like it they could decide not to renew the contract with her when it comes to the end so it wouldn't make it a very stable rental home depending on how often the contract gets renewed

This is a really sweet thought and the kitten looks ADORABLE but I am a bit worried that people will watch this and think a cat is a good present for someone (and won't be able to keep it and give it a good home themselves if it goes wrong like you were able to!) - to anyone who's watched and is considering doing something similar, please know that when you're getting someone a cat it can be a 15-20 year commitment, they have to pay for annual insurance, vets bills, pet sitters every time they go away (and kittens can't be left alone at all really!), other pets need to definitely get on with it, they need to be home at some point every day for enough time to play/feed/clean, they need a landlords permission if they're renting and if you're getting them a kitten it also has to have access to a garden when it's old enough. Once all that is sorted out with the person receiving the cat, that's when it's kitty time! So glad you're able to give this kitten a home.

First of all a kitten is never a present! When someone wants a kitten (yeah, I know about the tweet) they should get it themselves! That's because a kitten or any animal is not an object, it is an living being and therefore comes with a lot of responsibility! You should be really sure and check if you can provide everything it will need!
Second of all you can not just mess with that kitten it needs stability! And that's one place where it life's and shares with certain people. And like when she is living with that kitten it's hers. Simply cuz the kitten will not have that type of relationship with anyone else.
And last she really messed with Dodie's feelings, you can see it on how she reacted when she received the kitten. How do you thing she reacted and felt when she had to let it go again?

kittens help everything .. my amazing cat got ran over and my parents had said i wasn't allowed another one. but this christmas they got me a kitten and i cried for the rest of the day

for example, we have a cat called minxie, she's about 9-10 years old and an outdoor cat. she hasn't gotten run over now has she?
however, another cat we had named pendle was an outdoor cat too. but he got run over at the age of about 1
so dont tell someone that they shouldnt let their cat outside. if they don't want to because of their past experience, that's totally fine. but if they want to let their cat explore outside, then that's their choice
You're so lucky! I had a cat until February, he died when he was only 2. My parents say that it's too soon to get another one because it will make us more sad but for me this does the complete opposite, me knowing that I don't have a cat for comfort anymore makes me really sad...

Insecure control freaks don't like cats, well that's my experience of non cat lovers. They like dogs as they do as they're told. Try telling a cat to fetch; it will look at you like "yeah whatever stupid human".... I Loooove cats! 🤗🤗
sambawomen actually I don't like cats as I have been attacked by cats before. I love dogs as for all my life my family has always had dogs. My best friends cats are the only cats I would feel comfortable around.
Niallers pizzaslice I'm very sorry you were attacked by cats, and I understand why you'd be scared and therefore not like them. My mom was the same until we got a cat ourselves (my dad made the mistake of getting my brother a dog so it was only fair I got the cat I'd been asking for for ever). Once she lived daily with a cat that had been educated properly, she came to love cats as much as she loves dogs :)
I don't like cats honestly, they aren't fun and usually they bite or scratch or they don't cuddle and they don't have energy they never go outside. I don't necessarily dislike cats it's more that I love love love dogs

License him as an emotional support animal! That's what I did with my puppy because I wasn't allowed to have animals in my complex.
I think her complex does allow it, her roommate is just allergic and its not going to be fair on a roommate. Not totally sure but I think that's it
Not to bring up anything triggering, but Dodie does have actual depression (which she is open about) so she could easily register the kitten.

+hellscutie I do know what your getting at. animals usually aren't great gifts to throw at someone if you don't know if they can take care of it, I completely agree with you, but even if dodie couldn't keep it, she could. so the cat would have been fine
I genuinely think that when you factor all of these things, Jamie now is in ownership of this cat for all the wrong reasons, I mean, getting an animal isn't as simple as 'awh its a kitten, so cute!' it has to be a situation that you've thought long and hard about. Are you financially ready to own a pet? Can you give it a space to roam around so its not cooped up? Can you be sure that you have enough time in your schedule to look after the animals needs? Its a commitment, on average a decade of your life has to be thought about. Looking after an animal is one step below having a child, its a weaker being that relies on you for food, comfort and care. Most people spend ages before they get a cat on buying the right things, making sure your home is suitable so the cat isnt any more stressed than it already is. Jamie bought this cat to surprise Dodie, thats so wrong. You CANNOT get a cat for someone else, they have a right to make that commitment for themselves, and its unfair on both the animal and her to just turn up with a cat, not even knowing for sure that she's be able to keep it. And even now, yeah its worked out that Jamie will keep it, but it's rather underestimating what a massive change this will be. That little kitten has been taken from its mother, moved to a house, got comfortable with its surroundings, been moved to Dodies, got comfortable there, then moved again, its a lot of stress for an animal that isnt getting a choice. It's very young, and most adult cats would get stressed. Now the cats in a place where it wasn't planned for, and if the execution of this plan is anything to go by, I'm worried they arent prepared. Jamie has a young audience, its so irresponsible. This is how cats get put down and it really makes me sad.

I think in the UK it's against the law to sell kittens in pet shops - so usually they're either adopted or from families who are yet to neuter their females and they have a litter before they have the money to pay for the op/have to allow their female to get pregnant to get the money, it sucks having to do that but the op can be expensive!
I'm guessing it's not a rescue as no rescue centre would rehome a kitten to someone who was planning to surprise her friend with a 20 year commitment that she would not even be able to keep. I'm really concerned that this cat will be given up when it stops being a cute kitten... Jamie doesn't seem to even know what sex it is...
She probably got it from people who had need some kittens. It doesn't look like any particular breed (a moggy) so it was most likely free and maybe from an accidental litter.
+paradøx were they purebred? People shouldn't really charge if the cats are just moggys, unless they had to have lots of veterinary treatment. I get what you're saying though :)
Why didn't you get one from rescue which would've only cost half that? Rescue shelters are always over run with kittens, because of irresponsible pet owners who don't bother to get the cat spayed.

I could honestly relate to dodie crying over the kitten. There's nothing better then realizing you're going to have that sweet little baby for 15 years (sadly not for everyone) and you're going to love him, and play with him, and be his best friend. Cats are so precious, they deserve everything wonderful in the world.

She isn't skittish (far from it to be honest lol), she has some kind of OCD. She compulsively licks herself until she's bald. The vet said it's because she was taken away too soon.
