Rachel Portman was born in West Sussex, England. She began composing at the age of 14 and read music at Oxford University.
Whilst there, she became interested in writing music for student films and theatre productions. She gained experience writing music for drama in BBC and Channel 4 films such as Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Mike Leigh's Four Days In July and Jim Henson's Storyteller series, however the majority of her work has been in film.
Rachel won an Academy award for her score for Emma and Academy nominations for Chocolat and The Cider House Rules.
She has been fortunate to work with directors Roman Polanski (Oliver Twist), Norman Jewison (Only You), Jonathan Demme (Beloved, Truth About Charlie, Manchurian Candidate), Robert Redford (Legend of Bagger Vance), Mike Leigh (Life is Sweet), as well as countless others. Her list of film scores includes Never Let Me Go, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Grey Gardens (HBO), The Duchess, Infamous, Lake House, Hart's War, Human Stain, Marvin's Room, Benny and Joon, Joy Luck Club, Smoke, Nicholas Nickleby and Where Angels Fear to Tread.
She has written a musical of Little House on the Prairie as well as an opera of Saint Exupery's The Little Prince for Houston Grand Opera and The Water Diviner, a dramatic choral symphony commissioned for the BBC Proms concerts. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours. - Hudba
Rachel Portman is clearly an A-list film composer and, in my opinion, one of the finest all-around composers of any generation. She is an inspiration, and her music is an example of how film music can truly be great.
I absolutely adore her work, what an inspiration she is for people all over the world, especially in Syria where I am living. Her music just soothes my heart and soul.
Portuguese: Espero que venham dias melhores para o seu país...Boa sorte.
on march 24th 1997 she made oscar history by becoming the first woman composer to win an academy award for an original score. EMMA.
I absolutely love Portman's works. The soundtrack for Chocolat is one of my favourites of all time.
The splendor. It is interesting that not many women composers of music. But Rachel Portman makes honor. Have a lot of musical success.
I have to watch this every once in a while. It's one of the best videos I've ever seen. Everything about it, the orchestra seeming to so enjoy what they're playing, the violinist who seems slightly amused by the energy of the conductor, and this real, deep, simple music. Yes, I like this video.
I have never seen an orchestra sway to a piece of music like they did. They must have been really in "the zone".

This music make me feel fsntastic! Thank you, Rachel Portman!
Absolutely beautiful and incredible! When I first heard the music in the movie "Cider House Rules" I was spellbound. Then I heard it in a "Pure Michigan" commercial and I knew I had to hear more!
Superb, a recent discovery for me ;Rachel Portman, eloquant and strong and melodic..
I admire Rachel Portman , 《Never let me go 》 and 《One day 》there are my favorite film's soundtracks
am amazing composer, her music is beyond beautiful
One of my favorite contemporary composers. Thanks for sharing.
Love her work. Her music is so recognisable in movies. Like many other great composers that compose soundtracks you know almost instantly which composers made which soundtrack by just listening. I didn't know Rachel composed the suite for "Mona Lisa Smiles" when watching the movie, Yet it sounded similar to the soundtrack of the movie "Cider House Rules". When searching for the answers I was not surprised it to be from Rachel.
Bellísima música, te lleva al interior de un mundo de paisajes ...

So beautiful! 🎼😊🌼 Who is the principal cellist?
I looked at itunes for the soundtrack at 9:55 from The Emperor's new Clothes--they don't have it and the youtube videos I heard of it online dont match up to this track....Are you sure that's the correct soundtrack being played there at 9:55
Does anyone know where I can find the soundtrack for Jim Henson's The Storyteller??
What movie is the opening piece from?
I know the music in the middle comes from The Cider House Rules, Chocolat, and Never Let Me Go. How about the first and the last one??
The first one is from Bel Ami :)
The first one is the main title theme from "The Cider House Rules". The last one is from the opening sequence of "The Emperor's New Clothes"
