What has always struck me as so delicious in this scene is the smug, arrogant look on the face of the shorter office evaporates in an instant when the phone begins to ring. He's completely in charge (or so he thinks) and in a nanosecond that's all gone. Beautiful.

Take a look at Interstellar for example: The moment they land on the planet and say "every second equals one week", you hear a faint "tick"-noise in the score. That's the time running - every tick of the score is a week passing by. And, if you take your stop watch and time the whole take on the water planet, you come to just the right time the film implies.

I LOVE these Jack Reacher movies. Class and ethics, with determination and getting the job done even if disciplining the bad guys roughly is a must.
There are more Reacher books than movies , and they are all great .

Cruise was an excellent Reacher, unfortunately had his shortcomings though....nine inches of them.
Yet Cruise pulled off mentally and emotionally who Jack reacher is than the young actor on the tv show has. I’m hoping season two he comes into his own as Reacher. Cruise become the people he plays. Not too many actors do. Scary at times when they do.
yet the guy playing him for TV does the mannerisms exactly the same...only 9 inches taller. I admire Cruise for making the part his own so much the other guy will only be known to most with an internet search.
He did a better job in the first film, he couldn't resist running in the 2nd

I read the whole series to date and can honestly say I never thought Tom Cruise could pull of the Reacher character but man was I wrong!
Anne Rice the writer thought the same thing when Cruise was cast as Lestat, one of the main characters in her novel Interview With a Vampire. once the movie had been made, she was thoroughly impressed by his performance. I might not agree with or even like him if I met him, but I'll never deny that he's one of the best actors in the business.
I thought he was good but the guy who plays Reacher in the series is EXACTLY as I imagined him from the books

Wasn't convincing for me. Size matters!!! He was too small to play this role. The whole thing behind Lee Childs vision was compromised by him playing this role. He's supposed to be 6'5" 250 lbs and only about 10-12 people in the world have a shot of beating him 1 on 1.

@@22steve5150 yes because Tom is a massive box office draw and great actor. The Amazon show is alright but if you watch you completely understand why Tom was cast. The guy in the series is good but it as far as filling theaters there's no way he could appeal to a massive audience like Tom does. John Cena is a big name and big dude but the movie would be boring with him. The Rock is another famous big guy but he doesn't fit the reacher role at all and he'd be the best chance to draw big numbers at the box office.

Having read most of Lee Child's wonderful Reacher books, I could not envisage Tom Cruise playing this part. I avoided his Reacher movies for years. Finally watched one. Cruise portrays Reacher perfectly: no-nonsense, tough guy menace (albeit without the height). Great clip, great film.

JR 2 was bad. But Tom in Reacher 1 was outstanding. I read a reacher book after seeing the movie, and thought it mediocre. I didn't mind Tom was not the giant in the book, it made his scenes when he crushed the villains using skill and strategy even better.

A lot of people whine about Tom portraying Jack. My first experience with Jack Reacher was watching these movies. I enjoyed the movies for what they are, and now I can go enjoy the books too.
The show that came out does the movies justice with the comedy and action
The show is ten thousand times better than the movies. Incase you didn't know It's all based on novels by Lee child. Cruise is great and all but casting him as jack Reacher was just wrong. Reacher is like 6'3 240 and built like a brick shit house. Tom's barely 5'5

I don't give a flying f*** how book accurate the movies were or weren't, but I've watched both of them at least 3 times each. Two of the best vigilante movies I've watched without a doubt. I'm a sucker for vigilante movies. Liam Neeson, Tom Cruise, Jason Statham...these guys are so badass that they've become literal status symbols.
Yeah! I love Denzel as The Equalizer too, but sadly those movies' plots are too stupid (no offense to Mr. Washington).

If only a person like him really existed . This world would be so much better. The sad fact of the matter is , that so many in powerful positions are so corrupt . The ones in power that are supposed to serve and protect the people have let this country and it’s people down. They have become worse than the criminals because they abuse the power for their greed. All of them in both political sides have let us down. If only there was a real Jack Reacher in the world . Even one would restore my faith.

With cell phones cameras are everywhere, and with the internet evil is shown to the world in hours. U.S. police are FINALLY going to be forced to reform because of cell phone cameras, and that's just one example.
2nd reason. Robert Heinlein, "dean of dcifi" wrote most of his stories with a similar background. Made writing easier. But he had an uncanny sense of history. His "future history timeline" ends with "The first human civilization".
Just before that? A world wide pandemic.

@@Gamzor For a action movie like that you don't need to be a "better actor". He play the role fine like many other roles in his career, no doubts about. But if you have ever read the books, he is a disappointment in the role and doesn't fit at all.
Anne Rice said the same thing when she heard Cruise would play her vampire Lestat (in Interview with a Vampire); she was pretty mad. But then she saw a few of the dailies and flipped 180 degrees in her opinion and thought Cruise played her vampire as well as any actor could.
The most unbelievable part of this scene....is the existence of a working pay phone in 2016. I needed to find one in 2011 during a snowstorm on the highway, and even then pay phones (ones that worked) were almost non existent during the trip. That's when I finally got my first cell phone.

To this day I am good friends with Judd Lormand who is playing the deputy in this scene. We used to work on offshore drilling rigs together many years ago then went and worked in Mexico together. He also plays Major Blackburn on Seal Team on CBS.
Tell him he does a good job, love Blackburn, better than Lindell, but Lindell still did a good job.

First time I ever heard of reacher was when my MiL got me one of his books. Read it from cover to cover in one day sitting in my deer blind. I've read all of them since. I just couldn't wrap my brain around tiny Tom Cruise being him.

Years ago while working in an auto parts store, there was a Wendy’s across the street, and there was a phone booth in the corner of the parking lot. One of us got the number off the pay phone then when ever anyone was sitting in their car eating, we’d dial the pay phone & let it ring. It was a riot, sometimes people would rush to get out of the car to answer it then we’d hang up as soon as they got inside the booth. We could see them through the front window of the building so it was easy to watch the phone booth for whenever someone was close. Then sometimes the same person would try to answer more than once. Those were good times back then, the early 1980’s!
when i was getting my CDL my trainer did that at some backwoods truck stop in Mississippi... when the person answered the phone he was like " ok i hid the body now what? " dude that answered turned white as a ghost... best use of those early cell phone minutes ever LOL

I have never seen this movie....I have a real aversion to Tom Cruise.....I can't think of anything he did that I have ever watched in its entirety.
Having put that out there, this was pretty cool.
Most of his movies are just over-rated and hyped up. Top Gun, nothing special. Mission Impossible franchise is just silly now. But the very first MI was a good movie.
And the only other of his movie I really enjoyed was the Firm. Rain Man was great, but that's due to Hoffman's acting.
You need to watch Top Gun Maverick!
