What’s the movie Jack Reacher about?
Ex-military investigator Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) leaps off the pages of Lee Child’s bestselling novel and onto the big screen in the explosive thriller the critics are calling “taut, muscular, gruff and cool”*. When an unspeakable crime is committed, all evidence points to the suspect in custody who offers up a single note in defense: “Get Jack Reacher!”. The law has its limits, but Reacher does not when his fight for the truth pits him against an unexpected enemy with a skill for violence and a secret to keep. During his investigation, Jack will discover that the real perpetrators are a gang led by a former Soviet political prisoner : Zec Chelovek (Werner Herzog).

People will complain that Cruise is nothing like book Reacher, physically. But Tom nailed Reacher's presence and force of personality in this movie
true true true
Heck yea!
Fan of the books since Killing Floor... and I have to agree. However, I was always picturing someone like Dolph Lundgren from the physical description in the books. It was hard to get past that but Cruise definitely won me over.
@@mikes5637 a younger Lundgren would have been good, but I don't think Lundgren sells it as well as Cruise did.
Some gene splicing and cloning would produce the perfect human for the role.
Bogart looks nothing like Sam Spade in the books either but he pulled it off as well.
Great opening and character intro. Cruise might not be 6'5 but as an actor...he killed it.
Agreed .. Cruise was great in this movie with some great lines. Loves the series too and Richtson gives a different vibes because of his physicality.
i like him more than the stoner that plays john wick.
He’s the same guy in every action movie. Honestly, how many more roles can this guy take before he’s starts to
Look his age?

I loved him as Jack Reacher. The size don't mean squat to me. He played it with such quiet intensity. Add to the fact that Cruise was a fan of Reacher to begin with and was anxious to do the role means a lot to me. Never been a big Cruise fan... but in this case he was awesome.
He's a good actor but his persona is huge that it's impossible to differentiate the person from the role he's playing in this one. And the one major characteristic of Jack Reacher is his size and height. We all know Tom Cruise isn't 6'5." That's a glaring trait that's hard to overcome. He should have just played this role as a different, independent character. It would have been more enjoyable and believable that way. Or else produced the Jack Reacher series with a different actor. His ego got in the way of his common sense in this one.
@@dianemoonstone4715 Totally agree with his persona being a problem, it does seem to get into a problem in most of his roles. He has stepped out of it like he did in Interview With the Vampire. The height thing bothers me a bit, because I just don't think that should matter as much. I mean, how many times do movies alter things from books? Either elements or characters... so this shouldn't be any different. Look at Morgan Freeman's character in Shawshank. In the book he's a white guy with red hair.. but no one cares, but because Cruise is on the short side we are quit to attack that. As long as he portrays the character correctly I can forgive that. :)

Tom Cruise can portray any character. Such an excellent actor
I'm pretty sure that even Lee Child said something like 'with anyone else you'd get 75% of Jack Reacher with 100% of the size. With Tom Cruise you get 100% of Jack Reacher with 75% of the size".
Sounds like a weird discount offer
That sounds fair. I equate it somewhat like how Hugh Jackman (6'3") can give us a definitive Wolverine (5'3") despite being a foot taller than the character. Tom Cruise has less of a height difference as it is, being ten inches shorter than Reacher.
With Tom Cruise you get 75% of Jack Reacher with 50% of the size".
@@menacelurkingyet8345 With Tom Cruise you get 100% of Jack Reacher with 75% of the size

The thing I love this movie the most : 0 stupid special effects to "sell" the movie. No super cyber soundtrack or pop hit, no CGI. Just plain and simple freaking brilliant acting with fitting background music. This movie is just so perfect because it's so simple by the cover, yet the character of Reacher is brilliant, and Cruise nailed his acting.
It really doesn't matter what character Tom Cruise is playing, he makes all of them look good!
Just 6in lower
I concur. Even in Family Guy!
He’s insane with all that Scientology stuff
Not in this he doesn't.
yeah you are right
I'm old enough to remember people complaining Hugh Jackman was too tall to play Wolverine and 20 years later he's one of the best movie characters ever.
not for me lol
Tom Cruise is to short to play Jack Reacher. Tom Hanks is too short to play Forrest Gump. Hugh Jackman is too tall to play Wolverine. Michael Keaton is to comedic to play Batman. Heath Leger is too rom-com to play Joker. Gal Gadot is not busty enough to play Wonder Woman. The list goes on.
The thing about Cruise as Jack Reacher is, nobody in real life wants to fight a guy 6’5” and 250 . Not even a couple guys will do that. Cruise gives it a more believable character that thugs would try and take advantage of. That’s real life!
that's why I get into it with women who don't think it's totally IRRATIONAL for a woman to hit a man outside of self defense. Even MEN understand the MAJORITY of the time NOT to start a fight with someone that even remotely appears that they can EASILY SKULL DRAG YOUR ASS!
Not true. My nephew is 6'7" 270, and built like a football player. He frequently deals with people trying to start shit, evidently for the sake of trying to prove themselves.
@@CalebTrask , that’s unusual. I’m 6’3” and 225, and I was in law enforcement my whole career and the small guys were in a lot more fights. For three years, my partner was a 6’4” power lifter named Randy and I don’t thing one single arrestee tried to fight us that entire time.
Good point! Cruise has always struck me as an intelligent guy. So many people criticize the hell out of him for the Scientology thing, but since its actually considered a "real church" by the IRS, it allows him to hold real estate and some other assets without having to pay taxes on it:) Other than jumping over the couch on TV:) he hasn't made many mistakes in the entertainment field LOL.
@@CalebTrask trying to start crap with him or is he dealing with protecting others. Attitude has a lot to do with it also!
That's acting. Tom Cruise is light years away from the physical description of Reacher in the books but he plays it so well that I didn't even care.
Actually, I always thankful to Tom because of him world realize how huge is Reacher's fan base are .😅 every time , every one is criticizing him for portraying this character. This is the power of real fans which produce the perfect series almost 8 years after the first film.
Thanks to you Tom 🙏🏼
“Real fans” yet your only gripe is his size. That just goes to show how stupid those books are written. If the character is just size and that’s all you can point to then it’s a shitty written character
I've re-watched both the Reacher movies many times, just because of Cruise and how perfectly he plays Reacher.
Yeah... That's right.... Perfect at no price..... That's fantastic.....
@@HONORTONUMERIC123 WtF kind of reply is that "perfect at no price"
@@terryosinga2155 when you buy your roles with production rights instead of being cast as an real representation of a iconic character people who have been reading for many years Tom could have paid 10-20 million to cgi him up to a proper Jack Reacher size and got massive support for his performance. I love how he keeps control even when others try to leverage him. When he doesn’t agree or like the answer...ok bye
I know what this comment is implying but in the real world, one would be wise to think twice before saying bye bye, especially when you have bills to pay, a family to feed or a close relative under medical care.

I personally think he was better in Collateral. He didn't need to be huge, just cold AF.
I prefer this reacher to the tv show one. Not that the tv show one is bad, just prefer this one.
Such an underrated movie. It is done so well. Probably because no one enjoy's last action hero type of movies anymore. We need more movies like this.

@Pyro Head yeah 😂it's really not some major accomplishment

It takes me nearly half an hour to run 2 1/2 miles lol
@@MrGrenade121 not if you can run a mile in 6 minutes which is more possible than you think. walking a mile in under 9 minutes is NOT impossible either
Special forces requirement is a 2 mile run in maximum 12 min. So what you're saying isn't quite true.
I thought Tom Cruise did an excellent portrayal of Jack Reacher.
He did an excellent job in my opinion, fans of the book as well as Lee Childs himself just didn't like him as a character because Jack Reacher's size is a huge part of who he is. Jack reacher is about 6'5 & 250lbs and Tom Cruise is about 5'6 or 5'7 I'm guessing around 160 to 170 lbs. That's a big difference. But you're right Tom Cruise did do a great job and this would have been great movie if it wasn't about Jack Reacher but some other character.
He nailed the demeanour and confidence, but obviously a big part of Jack Reacher is his physical size and rough appearance
He did. The height thing doesn’t bother me.
All Tom Cruise movies rock.
@@wchandler2010 As far as I'm aware, Lee Child approved of Tom Cruise being Jack Reacher. He knew full well that compromises have to be made sometimes in film, and that there weren't really any actors with both Reacher's height and demeanour. So he opted for somebody with the latter.
I love the way he keeps the conversation under his control. The big city DA tries to get bossy and keeps getting left behind.
When Jack Reacher and Jason Bourne meets to share a drink... CIA, NSA and FBI shit in their pants...
Don't forget Interpol
The Reacher novels, written by Lee Child, are spectacular escapist dramas. Reacher embodies the free spirit that many of us had once aspired to, combined with the " careful what you ask for " integrity that many lack.
" One look at him and I know he'll do anything to get what he needs, one look at me and he knows I'm not bluffing ".
My favorite line out of the JR movies is: “ is she a good kisser”.
Two words, James Barr
The script writing, editing, and testing were beyond superb. Absolute perfect acting and delivery of these lines was critical... Continuity of this film was also masterful. Each character delivered supreme performances in supporting their roles.
the writing, this story, is absurd. an officer busted in rank, then getting it back ? lol, that's for corporals. only in the USA twice? what about all the military schools, where did he deploy from, did he never have to present evidence as an investigator? after being wounded, he was discharged with purple heart in county was he? so many crap details in fifteen seconds of dialogue is ludicrous
the writing is so holy, the Pope ought to take notice
@@sp10sn you can tell that to Lee Child, the writer of the books, if you have actually read them. The books have a lot of character development that you simply cannot fit in a movie. In no way can your comment be justified if you're judging the script based on one montage scene.
@@advaitpetiwale9596 I mean they casted someone who is 5'7 to play a character who in the books is 6'5,

I was replying to the other comment who seems to have absolutely zero background on Jack Reacher, and is asking questions, quite a lot of which have been explored in the books.
Except the villain. There was nothing about that old man that had me concerned in the least. They needed somebody way more convincing to play that part. It made the final shot to his head anti-climatic. A freaking 12-year-old kid could have taken that guy out and I don't know anybody that could possibly be intimidated by him.

If you're going to say Tom cruise sucked as reacher because he wasnt built like a Nephilim, you're also basically saying the same about Mark Wahlberg, who is 5ft9, playing Marcus Luttrell, who is 6'6, in Lone Survivor. Both actors nailed the personality and character traits of their roles, despite their physical differences.

Tom Cruise should take a break from Mission Impossible series and make much more serious toned thiriller with compact action movies like this and Collateral. He definitely has what it takes as an actor.
Once you watch Alan Ritchson playing Reacher Tom doesn't cut it, too short, too skinny, not tough enough

Sooooo many good scenes in this movie......but when he pulls up to the motel in the kids Chevelle and very tightly grips that 4 speed shifter ball after seeing them pack up the dead girl..........determination to the death......all portrayed with one hand.......now I have to go watch it again !
Jack Reacher is the ultimate "Gray Man" ... That's what I love about him. He is in the shadows but still has military intelligence at his service... He is better than James Bond 007 and Jason Bourne.
No fucking way hes better than Bourne bro... Treadstone is hot shot...
James Bond is basically a special forces operator (they say spy, but no spy actually does that stuff), Jason Bourne is an assassin, and Reacher is a military investigator. They are very different in what they do. There's not a real 'better' other than which you prefer watching.

this Jack Reacher guy is almost as bad ass as me
Cruise adds a hint of playfulness to these types of roles which is just his natural charisma really but it makes it fun to watch.
Kudos to both men for their acting.
Granted: Tom Cruise nailed the non-physical aspects of Jack Reacher with great acting. But sheer physicality is essential to the character of Jack Reacher. It is not a knock on Tom's acting to say that he simply does not measure up fully to the character of Jack Reacher. It is a simple statement of fact that does not disrespect Tom's acting.
The first one was good, they dropped the ball on these film's
As someone who's read all the books I felt that they made the wrong choice for the second film. Never Go Back is probably the weakest in the series, and the screenwriters' attempt to rewrite it by adding action scenes just didn't work.

OMFG ... just this bite, and i wanna watch this movie
Best thriller of it's times.
As a fighter pilot, Cruse comes up short; nutas reacher, it changed... I like the character...
I disagree with everyone who says Tom nailed Reacher. Tom played Reacher snarky: as if he was looking to have the best sarcastic answer, as if he was proud even of knowing something that no one else knew. That's the Cruise coming out - who Tom really is. Reacher isn't like that. He knows things, because he knows things, not because he's proud of being smart. No: that's just who he is - one step ahead as a matter of fact. Nothing more.
I'm not a big fan of Tom Cruise, but I must admit that he has a strong aura and amazing physical capabilities as well. In the novel, Detective Bud White was supposedly the largest officer in the LAPD. Still, many of you may remember, the performance of Russel Crow on "L. A. Confidential", which was totally convincing. Seems to be a certain difference between the film and the novel.
This is such great scene
I'm still don't understand why people still hate this movie bc TC are not 6'5.
Reacher in novel is badass becasue not only looks like a tank, but also he thinks like a tank, acts like a tank, speak likes a tank, and punch like a tank - which means, you don't have to be looks like a tank to prove Reacher is a tank. With beatuiful cinematography and genius writing, this movie verify that.
I like how they kept the continuity of Reacher's background the same between the movies and the show.
Jack Reacher is a great character, and the Netflix series and Movies are all good, so I dont care who plays Reacher, just keep making more.
After getting the bedroom eyes from the ladies, it would've been awesome if the dude at 1:46 gave Reacher the wink-wink.
He did. You cannot see thru his glasses. 😉
Bedroom eyes haha!
Anyone that says Cruise is too small to play this role should go have a meeting with Mike Tyson to "discuss" that.
Three miles to the bus station in 24 minutes is High-Speed!
Same reason he shot 5 people. He's crazy. 😂 Always makes me crack
I've watched the first season of Reacher, well acted great action and story and look forward to season two. However, I doubt I will watch season one again for a while, probably again just before the new season starts, just to refresh. The two movies with Tom Cruise are so well done and Cruise's presence as Reacher works so well I have watched both numerous times and find each time enjoyable of just good acting and drama. I doubt Cruise would ever do a TV series like Denzel Washington doing a TV series of the Equaliser which the two movies like Reacher were brilliant and I have watched many times. Cruise and Washington portrayed their roles to perfection. More please!
Denzel isn't doing the Equalizer show.
They gender swapped him, Queen Latifah is playing his character.

Cruise is a great actor, and when Reacher made it to the movies I was glad , one of my favorite literary characters had made it to the movies. When he became 6'6" and 250 pounds I was really happy.
I've tried to dislike Tom Cruise for a long time, but it turns out he is an excellent actor.
Give it another try, it's easier than you think!
It's easy when you know xenu.
there's is no way he can "walk" 3 miles in 24 minutes
I'm not fast but I can walk a mile in 20 minutes. That is 3 MPH. If I really hustle I can walk at 4 1/2 MPH.
A bus stop 3 miles away and he can walk there in 24 minutes? I could barely run there in 24 minutes. Lol
Cruise was the perfect Jack Reacher for the segment of the audience who didn't read the books.

This reminded me of mission impossible with out the team
Loved his performance in both movies. All the comments about how he's too short and ignoring the sublime performance... Wolverine is meant to be a shortarse, but there are very few people who think Hugh Jackman didn't fucking deliver that role time and time and time again. A physical description doesn't matter when you cast the right person for their actual talent.
This was a great movie.
I applaud the editor for digging hard to find that thumbnail.
"For the same reason he shot five people, he's crazy." This was probably the first time I was off-put by a protagonist in a movie. Not in a critical or negative way. But just didn't agree with their opinion. Up to this point, I sympathized with Barr because he didn't seem like the shooter. I wanted him to be helped. Then Reacher comes along and I think "Here's the hero, he'll clean this mess up and save his friend! Why else would Barr ask for him! He's a great guy probably!"
But he shows up on-screen and immediately deduces Barr as the bad guy and wants him dead. And I think, oh, okay. So uh... what now? Great film. Very subversive action.
I can't think of any 6'3"-5", 220-250 actor who could play this role as good as Cruise did.
I saw some suggested Dwayne Johnson should play Reacher but he always plays the same character, and not nearly as good as an actor as Cruise is.
Never would have picked him, but now when I read them, I see him.
IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK!! No seriously, I think you may be underestimating the Rock, he has some serious range to his acting.
