Yeah, I am not a fan of touch screens on laptops and I am less a fan of those who touch my screen!
I agree. On convertibles and 2 in 1 laptops a touchscreen is great. On a normal laptop...well I don´t see the need for a touchscreen. Makes no sense. Mouse, keyboard, trackpad...
@@858Markus Same. My laptop is connected to a USB-C dock most of the time, so it would be out of reach and awkward to use a touchscreen
@@858MarkusNaah, for me, it's not convertibles and non convertibles.
I differentiate by screen size.
13 Inch: Sits relatively close to me and using the touch screen feels intuitive and useful in certain situations.
15+ Inch: Too far away, don't need it.
That being said: I almost always prefer a laptop with a touch screen anyways. The whole screen assembly tends to be more durable and easier to clean due to the glass and I can do stuff like sign documents or hand annotate stuff when I need to.
@@malexander6367 fuuuuuuck that. If I need a touch input, I'm using a tablet or a phone. That's what they're made for. Some screens are meant to be seen, not touched.
I’m glad this laptop exists, even if I never intend on buying one. Also, “butt cheeks” should be the base rating for _all_ measures.
Just finished installing everything yesterday on mine (batch 5)! Coming from a Lenovo x240 and 2011 MacBook Pro 13 inch this device is an absolute godsend for me and I’m so happy a company finally made a laptop like this!
if this laptop were cheaper, I would easily buy it, but unfortunately, I'M BROKE.
typing from framework 13 11th gen: I've had some issues early on that I probably wouldn't have had with another laptop, but I'm really excited by the ability to BYO parts to reduce upfront cost (no extra $200 for a 1 TB hard drive or extra extra $200 to get 16 GB soldered on RAM instead of 8 GB) and the ability to upgrade the mainboard instead of tossing the laptop
Sick bayside shirt
The speakers are actually side-firing, not top firing. What you're showing is actually the top intakes for the fans. As for the magic Apple uses to get crazy battery life, the magic comes from using ARM as the architecture rather than x86-64.
The ISA is less important than the microarchitecture. Also Apple can do a lot of vertical integration and OS optimization. Having all on one SoC, and a wide array of dedicated function blocks helps a lot with power efficiency.
@@LordApophis100 You can only do so much though. Can confirm as a previous owner a an x86-based MacBook Pro. Battery life is very good considering the hardware, but once Apple switched over to their own silicon, it was a dramatic uplift in battery life across the board. However, I'm more of a PC and Android gal myself, so the AMD 7040 series is the best we've got in terms of efficiency (FW13 and FW16).
@@TechieZeddie The CISC vs RISC debate concluded 2 decades ago. All modern CPUs internally are RISC and decode their ISA to micro ops. The ISA does not have that much impact on the CPU as people think. AMD uses one microarchitecture across all products. Zen is designed around high end desktop and servers, then scaled down for mobile. If they did a dedicated design just for mobile, they could get around Apple Silicon efficiency. But they would also have to have the same control of the OS to really match it.
Similarly, Apple just can’t scale their mobile first CPU up. M3 in a Mac Pro performs about the same as in a MacBook Pro.
No, Apple makes every component in their laptops and can therefore design every aspect of the hardware to maximize battery life. Also, they tailor even the operating system to the hardware, which further helps this.
This ARM vs. X86 power efficiency thing is an oversimplification of people who don't understand computer hardware. x86 chips can be power efficient just as ARM chips can have lots of performance.
@@LawlessNategoogle tried, what happened?
Lots of companies have launched "upgradeable" laptops only to stop producing the module after 2 generations... Maybe Framework will be different but unless you can get a module for e.g. the RTX 6070M or whatever in a few years time this is just a waste of money. You're buying an idea, a great idea - but if you just need a great laptop instead...
Agreed.
Apparently the 16 from batch 1-3 has some serious issues with maintaining battery life. Maybe worth looking into in the future?
Just got my wife the current AMD 13 and it's simply lovely, I personally haven't used a laptop since 2013 and was amazed by it compared to my big chungus some years ago.
Beautiful laptop, love the idea. Wanted to buy one....but they don´t ship to my country, and I am not a fan of third party shipping. And buying it thru my business is momentarily impossible. It is true that for the money you can buy a different beast. So I did buy a ASUS Rog Strix G16 with the intel i9 13980HX and the RTX 4080. It is a monster of a laptop performance vise. I use it as a workstation and for gaming. This one will last me for five years, and the Legion 5 2020 is going to my son, as it is in excellent condition (always care for my stuff, take it apart and clean, repaste it etc.) But after that I hope that Framework will be an established brand, and maybe my next laptop will be a Framework. Always built my desktops for the past 25 years. And the idea to build a laptop like desktop is genius. To be able to change or upgrade only the parts I need. I wish Framework all the luck to pull thru.
Just got the framework 13 and its been great so far. I have a desktop and a steamdeck so no need for a discreet gpu in a laptop for me.
I got mine in just under a week ago and agree, the battery life could be better. (Also its weird, but the speakers are actuality side firing one's) Other then the mid battery, its an amazing laptop and was a worthwile investment
The framework laptop is nice for the customizable i/o but the price is still high for the overall premise on hardware specs and performance as you stated. I am a fan of the matte screens as well but there is just something about the clarity on the Apple glossy screens lol.
But when you upgrade 3 years from now, you're spending a fraction of what you would on another laptop.
You only left out the discussion about how much more or less it costs, when you upgrade the product. I was the most curious about the upgrade path and possible costs. Because yeah, as a one time investment it's not cheap. But how about with the upgrade costs? 1 upgrade will cost less then investing into a new laptop? Why you left it out? Did you forgot about it? :)
How is the performance on battery? Is there much difference between being connected to the network and the battery? With battery can you play at the level of an asus rog ally?
Thanks so much! A very enjoyable review. I'm thinking about buying one of these bad boys and slapping Linux on it... 🤔
Absolutely recommend it
wait... instead of buying a type-c module, can't you just plug a charger or dongle directly into the gap?
Just checked. Yep
The usb-c module costs $9…

Lol "installed windows 11 because I don't hate myself" I would argue windows users are the masochists 😅
True. I do like my MacBook
I’ve got a iPad that you would have to pry out of my dead hands, but my MacBook sat on the shelf and never got touched. My gaming laptop on the other hand is used all the time. Never got the hate about window 11, it’s been rock solid and super stable for me.
Every OS has it´s pros and cons. Windows is user friendly even for a monkey. Plug and play with broad software and hardware support. Linux distros are great if you grew up with DOS, and don´t have a problem with the terminal. And it can run on a toaster. Never used MacOS, but I think that it is also a really good OS. Never understood the hate towards any system. It is always great to have the possibility of choosing what fits best to ones needs.
I don't think the terminal is a requirement when using most Linux distributions.
@@Supermath101 It definitely is. If you're a typical Windows superuser who is used to having a GUI for most every configuration and troubleshooting task, Linux in all its flavors will leave you sorely disappointed.
I wonder if they will update the framework with arc gpus and stuff
You heard it here first, if you ordered a Framework laptop 16, your speakers won't sound like butt cheeks. Thank you, for testing the laptop from a user standpoint. I pre-ordered one and it'll likely ship next week. How's the touchpad spacers? Are they flat? Do they dig into your wrist? Early batches had that issue.
Thanks for this review, I was supposed to see one is my favorite CZcamsrs bought one. I follow server and network videos from your channel. Keri up the good work and I love your videos.
I was nervous about the spacers and that you’d be able to feel them but it’s impressively well made. You wouldn’t even notice while typing unless you looked down.
@@RaidOwl That's good to know. I'll find out when I get my laptop. I'll setup my SSH keys and connect it to my VMs. I'm excited to try out netboot xyz and see if it works with the Framework Laptop 16.
I so want one.. but currently they don't ship to Europe. I do hope the expansion module can be used with additional battery. and with my aging eyes.. 16+ is the miminum screen size.. really happy to hear about its screen accuracy. (do hope for more options like mini-led which should save batter a bit more).
overall want one, but can't get one till they expand to Europe. Also another point if you upgrade the motherboard they have .stl files for cases to reuse the motherboard in other projects which shows how reuse orientied they are.
They already ship to several European countries. Have a look on their site
Linus is NOT a co-owner. He is only an investor...
Thanks for the correction
Raytracing is legit the most beautiful damn thing ever... I cannot play games without it when the option is there lol.
Love that youtuber acknowlaged that only he cares about video editing performance and not the audience, hate that most reviews compare video editing performance as thing that should be cared about.
Does anyone know if the ugreen NAS’ BIOS is locked to prevent installation of a different NAS os e.g Truenas or unraid?
Nope it’s not locked
@@RaidOwl Imo that's one of the most important things when it comes to the longevity of an off-the-shelf NAS
Well NASCompares had a rep on for like 1 hr 7-10 days ago and he said it would VOID your warranty. Unless there was such an uproar in the last 5 days because of that. Most people comments I saw after that and others who knew after that just stopped watching vids on their NAS. Otherwise sounds like an EXCELLENT product. However, maybe a warranty doesn’t matter to you. Chances I assume would be under 5%, hopefully under 1%. I also heard from a post that they have been selling MAS’s in China for 1-2 years. If true then they do know what they are doing hardware wise. But then, why the Kickstarter?
Needs coreboot support and then im sold
Also, Fuck windows
My windows are too big for that
@@RaidOwl nothing is too big if. You're brave enough 🥵🥵🥵🥵
Anyone find a ddr5 5600mhz 64gb sodimm kit yet? I “need” 120gb of ram for my 500 google chrome tabs 😅
Too bad you didn't put lmde on it instead of w11. (Since you obviously DO "hate yourself "😊)
Neat
So did you justify how much money you spent?
For content, sure. For personal use? Nah
"I installed Windows 11 on it, because I don't hate myself"
>But you do, if you install Windows 11..
That's backwards..
Nice machine though.
The UGreen Kickstarter ended weeks ago….
And their website is broken :/ but hey at least you’re getting paid they are losing out
$2600!?! I'm more in the $600 price point myself. Broke boys stay home... 😂😂😂
Lol luckily $600 laptops are pretty solid these days
There are cheaper Framework models, including their pre-owned option
Build quality and design is light years behind Apple.
Not worth it IMO
Yeah it’s walking a fine line
Try Linux for a better battery life and performance.
It just doesn’t seem like a good laptop for the price. They’re selling customers a promise they can’t guarantee.
HOW DARE YOU CALL MY 60hz IM GOOD AT 20hz THANK YOU VERY MUCH
I used to be sad that Framework wasn't shipping to my country. Then I found out about the LTT connection, now they couldn't pay me to use one.
what's the deal with the LTT connection
Why
ˇ Bad take counter
Linus as an individual is just an investor and LTT is not affiliated. He's no more co-owner than anyone else that owns stock of a business.
