Paradise Lost is the latest release from Bristol-based producer Groke and continues his portfolio of conceptual music after his acclaimed Deep-Sea inspired EP The Dark Deep. The boundary-pushing concept album is based on Milton’s epic biblical poem which follows Adam and Eve’s journey through innocence, temptation, a painful rebirth and their expulsion from Eden. The characters are conveyed through instrumentation with Adam being represented by the Cello, and Eve being represented by the flute. These protagonists are placed in a colourful, ever-changing sonic environment created using a combination of forward-thinking electronic elements, historically inspired instrumentation and immersive nature recordings. The result is an album that matches the elaborate otherworldly nature of Milton’s poetry with a modern bassy twist. The literary and sonic narrative is further enriched by 11 stained glass artworks created by Tamsin Abbott in response to the tracks and the poem.
