The song that stopped LittleBigPlanet

- The song is still in the game. They just removed the lyrics.
This is what SONY said:
"During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur'an. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence that this may have caused. We will confirm the new launch date shortly."
The controversial lyrics and translations are:
"كل نفس ذائقة الموت" ("kollo nafsin tha'iqatol mawt", literally: 'Every soul shall have the taste of death').
"كل من عليها فان" ("kollo man alaiha fan", literally: 'All that is on earth will perish').
This is the song.

Talk about a LITTLE BIG controversy
Alphabet Swoop Ayyy!
I like the name alphabet swoop and cant I think it now thank you
Booo
We must be honest with ourselves. This is true, some day we will all perish.
yea we all know that but its a verse from quran and they put it in a song
And so what? Isn't the quran like the perfect book? Then why can't they use some sentences from it?
-stares at book- I don't see why they can't use lines from it. But they should give credit or technically it's plagiarism. -wink wink- Right~
Nora Kalinka True
***** Well why does it matter if it's "disrepspectful"?
the singer is from mali
there are only two arabic sentences
كل نفس ذائقة الموت which means every soul shall die at the end
and كل من عليها فان which means every one on earth is mortal
the lyrics was deleted because the game was wanted to be as inoffensive is it could
those two sentences are in the quran but they can be said also in funerals
so quran isn't sung at this song only two sentences in a way that isnt even offensive to muslims
note: iam Egyptian
انت صح
waleed kobroo , I see ur opinion , but you can’t say that it’s inoffensive to Muslims because I (a Muslim) find it very offensive that our Quran was put into a game, so don’t generalize. Plz.

هل مازلت على قيد الحياة؟
Oh shit, I heard this song in that game before, but never knew two phrases were quote from the holy Quran till now. The reason is that the singer sings strange not in Arabic, but when he says "كل نفس ذائقة الموت" then "كل من عليها فان" I got it, but still he spelled them in strange way that any Arab could maybe not understand what he sings.
Its scary somehow, i mean he surely knew it was quran?!
Sherry Re
It isn't Quran, it is just 2 short phrases.. I guess he knows this phrases are from the Quran no doubt, but it is forbidden in Islam to sing the Quran or even a phrase of it with music. Maybe the Singer doesn't know that it is forbidden to do that.
The two phrases state that everyone dies, and all on it (the earth) is vanished. The weird about the whole thing is : why did the company choose this particular song as a theme for a Kids Video Game LBP in first place? I mean it is talking about death and dying, lol. That's the weird part.
I don't think they understand what it says lol
+TomiTom1234. the thing is, at the time, it seriously mattered what was in songs and/or dialog.
or not
"Every soul shall have the taste of death."
"All that is on earth will perish."
Well, seeing as the following level is on fucking FIRE, I'd say it fits pretty well. :D
The people should have realized that the level was like that and gone with it.

The verse in arabic.
GUYS THE WORDS MEAN THAT EVERYONE IN THE WORLD WILL DIE IN THE END AND NO ONE IS IMMORTAL , AND THAT IS TRUE BECAUSE WE WILL DIE ANYWAY
everyone will taste death, is what it says. immortality is still a possibility, because you will still be living in heaven. which I find very wise.

@KakarottoCL I wondered the same thing myself since there were more lyrics than just the 'controversial' ones. Both of the aforementioned phrases can be used in a non-threatening way, such as when talking about a natural end of one's life and the fact that all things on earth die eventually. If that's the case, which I can only assume it is since game developers typically don't call for the deaths of the people that play their games, then it's very sad that this was so blown out of proportion
This song has one of the most amazing instrumentals Ive ever heard in my life, the part with the trumpets from 1:22 is amazing, its hard to describe why but that little rift is so hypnotic!

Astaghfirullah plz stop this song because this song abused for the islam and our holy quran
What are you even saying?
Z. Zay the song says : every soul will die at the end and that is from the holy quran and nobody put quran at songs
just becuase a passage is in the quran doesnt mean its quran, it's more of a general word of wisdom. the usage of this passage is actually very powerful. beside can any of you tell me whats the different between telawa and singing? they are basically the same thing but with a different name... the passage is in arabic originally in the quran but again the usage here is not quran
Hassan Alquwaisem i think singing has beats and instruments, telawa is using your voice only , so singing without instruments is fine, if he was saying those lyrics without the background music that would be fine

It's just someone singing everyone will die at some point in arabic.
Hattersin \o/ it was a verse from the quran i guest , and muslims have high respect for theyr holy scripts so meddling it with a song was offensive to them since they consider quran as the literal words of god

Guys let me explain this he man who sang this song was African Muslim he thought it would be a good idea to slide in a couple of phrases of the Quran in he says it's because he thought people would get into Islam but I think that he didn't know it was forbidden to play music with Quran so the developers decided to remake the games version taking out that song but the thing is that these two phrases relate to death and our planet vanishing so why did he put them in a game and why would he specifically choose them
+Adham Sanad It's an actual song.
"he didn't know it was forbidden to play music with Quran"
toumani almost certainly knows more about islam than you do. he (like most muslims in west africa) disagrees with you that music is prohibited. apart from anything else, the only hadith prohibiting music a) has a weak chain of narration, and b) is ambiguous as to whether it actually prohibits music alone or music PLUS the drinking of alcohol. quranic recitation and nasheeds are both music.
@@jemimallah2591
1- Quranic recitation is NOT a music
2- Nasheeds are NOT part of Islam
3- There is 4 Fiqh (jurisprudence) school in Sunnit Islam (80+% of Muslims). The one that allows the most about musical instruments still doesn't allow rope and wind instruments.
4- There is definitely not a single Fiqh school that would allow singing the Quran like if it was a song with a musical instrument.
True
This is awesome, I really can't understand why anybody should be offended with this peace of art.

Though that implies what is said in every monotheist religion. That line was unintentional and was only in the japanese version and was removed before any NA release as the rom date posted that, the sound put in with stock music collection and not anything nintendo produced and is in other games.

@marxandkirbyrocks I know...I'm pretty sure they were careful though, but they really had no way of knowing it had words from the Qu'ran until someone told them. Because seriously, the song isn't a sad, depressing song or something that reflects upon those words, so how are the developers supposed to know?

+Adham Sanad
Toumani Diabate is the Man from Mali that sang the song. He says "It's quite normal to play music and be inspired by the words of the Prophet Mohammed. It's my way to attract and inspire people towards Islam."
"Some Muslims believe that only vocal music is permissible (halal) and that instruments are forbidden (haram). Hence there is a strong tradition of a cappella devotional singing. Yet Sufi and Shia and Muslims believe that any instrument is lawful as long as it is used for the permissible kinds of music." [Wikipedia]
This is similar to the Christian Church's stance around the 7th century ACE, where instruments were frowned upon, and later the Gregorian chant was allowed. Even then, the church would not allow pagan or folk lyrics to be sung, but would allow the music to be played with more suitable lyrics.
+shaggytheshaman
I can see that for a Muslim, it would be wrong to have a song with text from the Qur'an in a game. That is not proper decorum so to speak. One might argue that the music praises god, but why should someone 'blessed' with the ability to sing be above those they cannot. In many areas of Muslim worship, the idea to permit all to worship in an equal manner. This would go along with not allowing visual (i.e. idol) depictions of their god.
There is a parallel attitude among some Christians, such as the Puritans.
In sub continent culture ( includes india pakistan and bangladesh) there is a culture of music. There are many instances of music being fused with quranic verses or hadith . There is a whole genre of such songs which are about love of god. Listen to kun faya kun (its from the quran meaning be and it is) its an indian song. Also there is alot of peotry which is about islam which is used in songs. So islamic music isnt uncommon
I am muslim myself and I really like this song.
The artist is muslim himself so he won't sing bad about islam. There are many songs that contain quranverses, I don't think it's totally unislamic to use quranverses in songs as long as the messages is positive or not unislamic.
Umm.. your so wrong.. if your Muslim you should know that putting quran in music is a sin no matter what!!! Quran and music/song or whatever can not be!
@superackbar Everything requires a context, this song is about mourning. That is how these words are used here, to express loss, they may be used for killing people but is not in this piece. I think the motive of this song this song extends beyond how some people may interpret it's meaning in a different context.
I've got a soundtrack to this game but this song doesn't have the lyrics in the soundtrack. I was hoping it would. The song sounds kinda empty without them.

I don't get why people are flipping out even today. This isn't a game exploring the intricacies of Islamic religion or culture. It's fucking LITTLEBIGPLANET, a game Sony wanted to be as inoffensive as humanly possible. Of course they were going to patch this out - it interfered with the mission statement. It's like the whole "spastic" thing with Mario Party 8 in the UK, only difference being that Nintendo had to issue an outright recall.
Sony also had to issue an outright recall, but it would come after the game was released if there was no beta testing by the public (sorta, not everyone got access)
