@@TheNixon333 it takes skill to get such an otherworldly sound from the same instruments that made 80s pop, especially live. Most songs are prerecorded and layered to get that full of a song
@@TheNixon333 The devil is in the detail though. Math rock drumming uses really weird time signatures and has to be very precise. For instance, I imagine he has his symbol really high, to ensure it's always slightly late, because that's what the time signature requires. It's hard to play, and even harder for a band to play along to.
Then look at what the other guys are doing:
Singer is singing, playing guitar, playing synth, and also playing bass synth with his feet, via the pedals
Second guitarist is playing guitar and synth
Bass player is playing guitar and synth
Then there's programming going on in the background, that they have to keep in synch with.
I agree with the original post. In fact I think it's one of the most difficult songs ever written. It's not just how many instruments they're playing, but the weird time signature. If you've ever played in a band, this kind of groove just goes against all your natural instincts. They're kind of playing a beat behind where they should be playing. Like, late on purpose?
And if you watch them play this live, both the guitarists are usually playing synth at the same time - ie. left hand guitar, right hand keys. The music video isn't completely accurate

Uh, yeah, you were living under a rock. This was on tv so often and was a pretty big hit as far as I recall. They were amazing live back then too. Saw a very memorable show after this album came out. Shame the lineup has changed since then but hey, at least you've found them now. There's a lot of other great bands out there doing similar things. Dig around.

As an American in 2007, watching my satellite tv late night, just happened to turn on to a British late night talk show. was bored so I thought I would watch. Low and behold, this band was playing this song as the end act. I thought the song was weird AF, but something about it, I couldn't get out my head. I just kept hearing the beat over and over...
Fast forward to NOW 2021, Ford releases a commercial with this same music playing. It click for me right then, and I HAD to find the band who made this song...

Stanier has his cymbal so high because he never wanted to have much crash in the songs, so having it that high makes it less tempting to hit it. + if he took it down people would complain, its become one of the bands trademarks. Stanier rules!

I love how one of the cores of this band is "how can we make music, with the random noises and sounds you hear from your instruments?" and then they just went with it and became a unique specimen of their own.
When this came out, I was a teen and would listen to this album while reading “speaker for the dead” by orson Scott card. The music will always evoke images of spaceships and alien planets and people for me.
This song gets my adrenaline going just from the vibe it sends and because of the experimentation on this track. I love this damn song and this band. The drums are so fucking heavy!

Actually having a nostalgia trip right now. I remember coming home from Kindergarten every day to play LittleBigPlanet and watch The Super Mario Brothers Super Show. I remember the specific time I heard this song (which took me so long to find.) my first thought was that I loved this games soundtrack more than any other game’s and I’m not planning on changing that opinion anytime soon.
It wasn't until after I got lbp3 (and my PS4 broke so I had to get another one) that I logged into my PS3 account and found this song.

@@voicehead The Super Mario Bros Super Show ended in 1991. LittleBigPlanet came out in 2008. I have vague memories of the mario show when I was a kid, but I never saw it on TV after that. I was wondering how this kid had both at the same time, in kindergarten.

he updated the video file. The quality used to be utter shit; Warp Records didn't like the fact that the music video to one of their most popular songs was like 144p quality, so they took it upon themselves to upload the higher quality version over the old video uploaded in 2007.
