  • Happy Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary! But wait... what is the Immaculate Conception? How does that even work? And why does it matter?
Fr. Mike is glad you asked.

I like how Christ was called to redeem the world by the Cross, so when Peter tried to keep him from the Cross, Christ said to him, "Get behind me, Satan." He was equipped to deliver the world by the Cross, even though that is such a strange thought on the surface. So, God equips us for the task, our vocation, in ways that may be misunderstood or not readily apparent. Amen. Thank you, Fr. Mike, for your homily today too. God bless.

Okay so I have questions about this if someone could please explain:
-So if Mary was born without sin then why wasn’t she the one to die for our sins?
-Aren’t there examples in the Bible in which Jesus teaches Mary about faith? Like the time when she and Joseph were anxious about where Jesus was and they found him in the temple. If she was born without sin, wouldn’t she be free from that anxiety?
-And also doesn’t Mary refer to God as her savior? If Mary was born without sin, she wouldn’t need a savior, right?

    • @wynamaarp7024
      @wynamaarp7024 Před 2 měsíci

Exactly. It's man teaching not Christ Jesus centered at all. Jesus died for Mary's sin too. They also teach that Mary didn't have children after Jesus,
It's odd that they claim they wrote the bible yet ignore the clear texts that Jesus had brothers and sisters, Mary had children other than Jesus.
Just know that the scriptures teach Jesus is the only way to the father. Any other teaching is wrong.

    • @Connor-fr5cn
      @Connor-fr5cn Před měsícem

Okay, so this isn't a perfect explanation but maybe it'll help.
      1) Mary didn't die for us because that's not her role. She may be "free of sin" but she is NOT God, and only God could bridge the gap between humanity and divinity. This question could be applied to anything, you know? Why didn't Jesus come earlier? Why even bother living as a human? Why didn't God redeem the world another way, he's God. But everyone had a role, and she wasn't a savior, but she did carry it.
      2) yes, he did teach her about faith, but that's not how original sin works. Anxiety is not a sin. She was still human. Being free of sin doesn't mean you're Godly in the sense that we think it does. Adam and Eve were free of sin, but they still made a mistake, how could they be deceived if they were perfect?
      3) yes, she does call God her savior. She needs a savior in order to be saved from original sin. She's "free" of original sin, but not removed from humanity. She's human, and as the new "mother of humanity" it shows that she needs it too. If we lived in a world where everyone had a disease, and someone gave you a vaccine during pregnancy so that you were never sick, would you call that person your savior?
Not a perfect explanation, I'm no theologian, but that's a rough idea. I encourage you to look into it further so you can better understand it than my explanations! God bless my friend

This is an example of a doctrine that uses words that are convoluted, confusing and, to put it mildly, speculative. Before her conception, Mary was 'preseved' from the 'stain' of original sin. How can we know that? Well, we can't. Even in the narrative stories of Jesus coming into the world, it doesn't make sense. We are told in so many ways that Mary's choice to be Jesus' mother was heroic. She made a choice! As an adult! Yet we are expected to believe that before she was even conceived she received a gift of 'preservation' apparently not available to any other human? Are we then expected to believe that if Mary made another choice, that the whole incarnation would not have happened?
And what of Mary's mother? Was she also given some sort of 'preservation'?
I'm a Catholic. I believe that the way we revere Mary is important not least of all for her heroic choice coming out of her strong faith. But this doctrine seeks to place her on a pedestal where that heroic, FREE, choice is made, at the very least, ambiguous. It would not be unreasonable to read this doctrine as a suggestion that Mary's fate was pre-determined.

Wrong. Mary as sinless and assumed into heaven was already believed by the early church (fathers). That is part of Tradition, this is just formally declared 150 years ago and it is defined as The Immaculate Conception. Mary was immaculately conceived by God because she had imperfect parents. The Holy Spirit cannot conceive The Lord God Jesus in a corrupted womb that is why Mary had to be saved in advanced or pre-redeemed by God and that is the Immaculate Conception. This is evident when Angel Gabriel saluted Mary "Hail Full of Grace..." and "you have found favor with God" in LUKE 1:28-31, Kaire KeCHARITOmene. Jesus cannot be born with a stain of sin / original sin, The Lord God Jesus is The Spotless Lamb and Perfect, he was always divine from the moment of his conception (COL 2:9) and the Holy Spirit cannot conceive Christ in a sinner's womb that is why Mary was Immaculately Conceived in her mother's (Ann) womb, meaning Mary was saved in advanced by God so she can conceive Jesus in the bubble of space and time (earth). This is why Angel Gabriel saluted Mary "Hail Full of Grace" or Kaire KeCHARITOmene in the original Greek in LUKE 1:28-31 meaning Mary is already full of grace (saved) even before the Savior Jesus was born in the bubble of space and time (earth) / have found grace with God and will always be endowed with grace by God.
When the archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary, he addressed her as “full of grace”. That is biblical. She is and was the only woman who was ever addressed this way. God would never allow himself to be born from sin. God saved her from original sin from her conception. God can (and does) operate outside of time and space. Nothing is impossible for Him. He saved her from original sin. It is by faith that we believe. Blessed are those who have not seen but have still believed.
2ND Mary cannot also fall into personal sin because an enmity was given by God between the woman (Mary) and the devil (serpent) in GEN 3:15 because Mary will raise the Son of God Jesus and no error and sin can enter the Holy Family.
THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION (CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH):
490 To become the mother of the Savior, Mary "was enriched by God with gifts appropriate to such a role." 132 The angel Gabriel at the moment of the annunciation salutes her as "full of grace". 133 In fact, in order for Mary to be able to give the free assent of her faith to the announcement of her vocation, it was necessary that she be wholly borne by God's grace.
491 Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, "full of grace" through God, 134 was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1854:
The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin. 135
492 The "splendor of an entirely unique holiness" by which Mary is "enriched from the first instant of her conception" comes wholly from Christ: she is "redeemed, in a more exalted fashion, by reason of the merits of her Son". 136 The Father blessed Mary more than any other created person "in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places" and chose her "in Christ before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless before him in love". 137
493 The Fathers of the Eastern tradition call the Mother of God "the All-Holy" (Panagia), and celebrate her as "free from any stain of sin, as though fashioned by the Holy Spirit and formed as a new creature". 138 By the grace of God Mary remained free of every personal sin her whole life long.
      132 LG 56.
      133 Lk 1:28.
      134 Lk 1:28.
135 Pius IX, Ineffabilis Deus (1854): DS 2803.
      136 LG 53, 56.
      137 Cf. Eph 1:3-4.

We honour our Mother & Father, so too did Jesus when He came to wild sheep and Shepherd them to safety.
He even honoured her by giving Her to all of us who call her Mother & request her intercession for us.
The early church fathers honoured and sought Her intercession...even the reformers!

This dogma was only defined (relatively) recently, in 1854, and prior to that was controversial (Thomas Aquinas didn't believe it).
And since then it's also controversial when dealing with the Eastern Orthodox.
For deeper history you could read the Wikipedia article.
It reports that the celebration of Mary's conception actually started in the East.

Your friend makes a great point because the immaculate conception is not Biblical it is made up by the Catholic church. The Bible says the only person without sin was Jesus Christ. Mary was a sinner in need of a Savior like the rest of us. Saying Mary was sinless puts her equal to God and is blasphemy and heresy.

I have been to Lourdes France and know that the Lady at the grotto said to 'I am the immaculate conception" how it took till 1854 for the church to identify the immaculate conception as a doctrine? If not necessary why declare it and what does the church base it on?. I know that God promised a new Adam and a new Eve in Genesis. As much as I believe it was Mary appearing at Lourdes, this is an area I struggle with as it's not in scripture. Any light shed on this would be nice just to help me in my faith thanks

I think the question of “why doesn’t God preserve everyone from original sin” is a deeper question than the nice but rather pat answer offered here. I also suspect that if we really understood the metaphysical trinitarian dynamics at play here Mary’s sinlessness and her immaculate conception are perhaps truly metaphysically necessary. The object of God’s subjectivity, which is who God is to himself (the irreducible subject
/object relation) cannot be sinful. Max Kolbe talks about Mary as the created form of the uncreated immaculate conception, the eternal receptacle and vessel of the Holy Spirit itself.
