Rory Sutherland - Behavioural Economics, Humans and Advertising

  • Introduced by the BBC’s Lauren Laverne as a great communicator of counterintuitive thinking, Rory Sutherland, Vice Chairman of Ogilvy & Mather, challenges us to look beyond the obvious for solutions to challenging problems.
Often the reason our solutions are ineffective or highly inefficient is because we assume people will behave like computers or spreadsheets with predictable responses to rational inputs or incentives. Instead, Rory argues we need to understand natural human preferences and build our solutions from this foundation.
Rory’s views are heavily influenced by his appreciation for the Nobel Prize winning behavioural economics research of Daniel Kahneman and Richard Thaler among many others. To our surprise, there are many times that the most efficient and effective path to progress is paved with irrationality.
The Thinking Digital Conference is an annual gathering of creatives, innovators, businesspeople, entrepreneurs and techies. Each May, hundreds of Thinkers gather in Newcastle over 2 days to explore and celebrate the ideas and innovations that are changing our world.

I love listening to Rory. But has anyone noticed that of his many wonderful vids this is one of several where his phone goes off while he’s speaking. It has happened often enough now that I am beginning to wonder if we are unwittingly participating in some behavioral economics experiment.

Analogy with Boris is unfair to Rory. If he would get half the airtime Boris got over the years, our society would be in a better place.

Mclard? I haven’t watched it yet so I’m assuming meaning McDonald’s serving bad fatty foods

@@chrissh0485 Don't know if you got around to watching it, but he used the fictional McLard burger as an example. If you put an item on the menu that is obviously bad, every other option will seem more appealing.

Please correct the title spelling. Or is it a deliberate interface. Your eyes stop at that word because there is something odd.

For me, I see Rory Sutherland on the title paired with words like “Advertising”, I click.
I don’t even look at the views, like to dislike ratio, comments and video duration the way I used to.
My time is important and the last thing I want is to waste 20mins of my time watching rubbish content.
That said, I see Rory, I click...
      And watch till end.

Yes a sign showing your speed will reduce accidents more then a speed camera. The problem is the goal is not to reduce accidents it is to raise revenue from the speeding tickets.
