I don't do light rays much, but found that I needed to do them again for an image. I stumbled around CZcams again w/o success, forgetting about this tutorial. Great demo - I gave up on Adobe's own version of almost exactly this technique. There is just such a gap between knowing something and knowing how to explain as well as you do.

Also, is there any advantage or disadvantage to painting black on a mask to hide the gradient from certain places-- say, over subject's face-- instead of using white to paint it in? Thanks again
Joe, Blend If will give you similar results. But I would use it in conjunction with the Screen Blending Mode to make sure it only affects certain areas. As far as painting with black, that would work just as well. Up to you how you decide to work. I hope this helps!

Would grouping the gradient, hue/saturation and levels layers then adding a layer mask to the entire group cause the gradient to move about or does this overcome that issue doing it this way instead? Thanks Jesus 👍

Restarize layer before converting to smart objec. Or dont convert it to smart object at all

What if you convert the gradient to a smart object and then apply the mask.
