I think it applies to both of them. The love the boy feels is more like Stockholm syndrome, learned helplessness, or pity. and the man just needs something to dote on and something to lean on.
Both versions hit differently. I love both of these versions because they subject the audience to different interpretations of the situation. I first heard Miy_yuu's version and my interpretation of the story was a little more horrific at first, as I could feel the craziness emitting from the characters which were terrifying but intriguing at the same time. Then, from the comments of miy_yuu's version, I found this one. It really flipped the story on its head and changed my perspective. The first one now feels like an outsider's perspective of how one might interpret the story, while this version definitely...feels like we're seeing the humane side. I can understand why the song is called "religion of loneliness" with this version compared to miy_yuu's. But, for the same reason, I still love how both of them add their own interpretation of the song.
