i love how the lyrics are sung really intensely and aggressively when he insists that "[he's] not lonely! not lonely at all!" to reinforce the character's denial and desperation, but when he starts to sing the word for "love" at 0:51 & 2:46, his voice becomes so delicate and soft, as if love is precious and fragile, which is kinda in-line with the story behind the song. knowing miy_yuu, i wouldn't be surprised if this was intentional.

I want to point out that Tamo is heavily covered, almost hiding/disgusing himself from Yota until right at the very end. He uncovers himself and is fully vulnerable in that moment, allowing him to truly be seen by Yota without fear of rejection. Showing his honest self.
Edit: at 1:55 he's showing his face with a truly happy look on his face, only to get crushed. I think this shows what he's truly afraid of, being vulnerable again only to get crushed. Even though their friendship was superficial, he actually did grow attached to Yota. So when he was taken away, he did in fact feel the pang of loneliness again. No wanting to go through the same thing again, he made a decision. The only way he could feel that happiness was to take matters into his own hands, only truly show himself in the moment before his death. There's no rejection after the fact then. No crushing of his emotions, no nothing. Even though Yota managed to escape his loneliness, Tamo couldn't.

Run down of two popular theories of the Eastern and Western audiences and an additional:
(Edit: Originally Tamo's behavior is referred as 'grooming' in the JP theory but the word had strong connotations to CSA so some words are changed for a more neutral outlook)
JP fandom theory: Tamo (the man) killed Yota's (the boy) parents and kidnapped him.
The images at the start: A pile of bodies, a man who may be Tamo standing over the them, and Tamo crying. The image in the last bits: a woman (presumably Yota's mother) hugging Yota frantically. Combine this with the knife imagery; Tamo stabbed Yota's parents and kidnapped Yota. During the RIP section, there are two coffins, which may be Yota's parents.
After Tamo kidnaps him, he manipulates Yota into becoming dependent, like a religious believer would depend on their god. Manipulators typically trap their target where only they can reach, be it emotionally or physically; Yota is usually alone with Tamo. We also see threatening images, such as Tamo imagining stabbing Yota while comforting him or a giant hand crushing a praying Yota, showing his true nature. Tamo is also crushed by hands, showing he's equally overdependent on Yota. (It's worth noting the hand crushing Yota hovers over him like a god, while the hands crushing Tamo are clasped in a prayer, like's Yota's.)
Eventually Tamo kills himself (motives unknown, maybe out of guilt or Tamo wanted to leave a lasting impression on Yota or he was getting cornered by the police) but succeeded in his goals. A grown up Yota visits Tamo's grave, wearing the coat he gave him. Not to mention images of Tamo overlapping, suggesting the cycle of abuse will continue.
ENG fandom theory: Tamo and Yota used to be friends, but ultimately Tamo succumbed to his loneliness.
In the lyrics, it's easy to see that the two are very lonely. Yota is shown alone in a room constantly, which implies his parents neglect him. One day, Tamo suddenly shows up in his life like a magic-man.
They bond over their mutual loneliness, but they're scared of getting comfortable, they're afraid of getting hurt. They're too used to being alone. But although they deny it, they have something more than simple acquaintanceship.
Tamo is different from the 'average' or he wants to be. He tells himself he's crazy but doesn't know what to do with himself. He doesn't have healthy coping methods, indicated by suicidal imagery. In the end, he decides he can't bear living... and wants to take Yota with him. The two coffins represents his wish to die with Yota.
But when he sees Yota with his mother, he realizes how selfish and contradictory he has been, so he jumps off a building alone. Yota witnesses it all. It explains why Yota is seen under Tamo when he jumps. This experience scars Yota and he can't get over it for his whole life, donning Tamo's coat and often visiting his funeral.
(This is one is popular among the English audience.)
Additional theory: the boy from "Bitter Choco Decoration" is Tamo. There's the similar hairstyle and lyrics about 'not being average.' The theme of "Bitter Choco Decoration" is being forced to conform, making a match. Also in a flicker shot 2:38, Tamo's hair color switches to orange.

For any people wondering the story, I'll give the theory/story possibly linked to this... credits to "Kendrillion" for the original theory on syudou's video, I simply re-worded it here.
The man in the video is Tamo and, the boy's name is Yota(, like Shota).
So, in order of the video... before Tamo met Yota, he lost someone who was presumably close to him in what is a fight or, an ambush... then, the video cuts to Yota in a praying stance or, begging. His room hints at him being there for awhile and, it's possible he ran away from home(, whether his parents are neglecting him or, were simply too busy to be there for him isn't clarified), Yota is okay with his lifestyle but, thoughts of his lonesomeness do pop up every now and, then... until he meets Tamo.
Tamo is intelligent and, claims that he, himself is crazy( possibly due to wandering into Yota's life) and, befriends Yota.
This sparks turmoil, as Yota wants company but, refuses to allow this connection resulting in them remaining as close acquaintances.
Then, we get cut to Tamo's perspective as he leaves Yota to think about this kid's situation(, though it is just a speculation, it's possible he's depressed). He then returns and, comforts Yota through the night.
I'm not too sure about what happened at 1:38 but, it could be Tamo trying to kill Yota or,( the more reasonable explanation) Tamo's first attempt to kill himself which failed as someone or, Tamo stopping himself from ending his own life.
The story is the same for Tamo, who equally seeks a bond but, also doesn't want to get close to Yota, as they already lost someone prior.
The point is, the meaning of this song... they both have created their own religions, a religion of solitude. They know that if they got close, they'd only get hurt from each other. So, they interact when Tamo visits Yota, often enjoying their time together.
As time passes Yota becomes comfortable with his new life, however... a strange figure appears. Notice Yota's expression, it’s not fear but familiarity. It’s his mother coming to take him home, as Tamo watches and, slowly closes the door. At 2:31 the scene is blurry but, it appears as if Tamo had finished making two graves, one for him and, one for Yota... but, he doesn’t want to kill Yota, but he’s put the pieces together for himself.
(Note: When I say Tamo wants to kill Yota. I mean a double suicide, not just a normal kill. However as Tamo's sitting there reflecting, he probably realized that he was being selfish and, wanted Yota to live a healthy life without him after all... they were just acquaintances and, nothing more.)
Throughout the video we gradually find out that the structure Tamo sits under is a high tower. Tamo, finally ready to end it all, falls from the building.
(Another Note: between 2:38 and 2:39, it flickers between three shots: one of Tamo, one of Yota, and a man with cream colored hair. I believe that the cream haired man was Tamo who had put up a facade( his blue appearance) even before he met Yota in order to “keep cool“ after the death of his previous friend which allowed him to think of Yota in his last moments.)
However, one small problem arises... he see’s Yota. Originally, I thought this was his imagination in his final moments, but I’m more committed to it being the real Yota. Yota knew that Tamo would come to this place, as during their time, Yota would have been introduced to Tamo’s hideout. Yota had rushed away from his mother to find Tamo only for the both of them to lock eye’s as Tamo falls. In that moment Tamo realize that he truly loved his time with Yota and, vise versa but it was to late as Tamo( still keeping his facade) hits the ground.
What happens after is really up for speculation as Yota’s mother could have found Tamo’s body and the graves and reported that he should be buried there, but one thing is for certain... in the end, Tamo died. The video ends with Yota visiting Tamo’s grave.

Yeah now that watch video again, Tamo was in a gang and his members all died, including his closest buddy, at the very beginning of the vid, with the flashback.
I will post my observation from the og video to here that's in the same thread as Kennedy Clay comment but didn't make it into the main comment.
Some more points are added and expanded.
First thing, we see both Yota and Toma crushed by giant hands in two different scene. The giant hands could be interpreted as God or life itself (even make more sense as we see Yota praying to it before getting crushed).
These scenes illustrate that Yota and Toma are similar people. As in both of them was dealt with a "bad hand" in life.
Second thing, the scene at 1:38 .
The actual sequence starts at 1:23 . We see Toma was comforting Yota. His right hand wass on Yota, patting him. His left hand was obscured.
Then we cut to 1:38 . It turned into a different perspective from behind Toma. It revealed that Toma was holding a knife on his left hand while comforting Yota with his right hand.
Then we got the eyes looking down. This is Toma's eyes as Toma looked down on the cryin Yota.
Combined with the two graves that Toma dug later on and Toma eventual suicide, I think the scene was Toma contemplating to murder-suicide both himself and Yota. To end their shared sad and lonely life. But in the end, Toma can't take away Yota life as he looked down at the boy, an innocent and pure boy as the lyric said. So he can't do it.
Third, when Yota reunited with his mother, we see Toma watching from behind a door then he closed it. It's very possible that Toma is the one who find and lead Yota's mother to reunite with his son. As a life of a homeless shouldn't be a life for a young boy. And so Toma brings Yota mom to Yota hideout.
Fourth, Yota name means idiot and useless I think. Maybe that is the reason why he run away from home. Maybe Yota's family think of Yota as idiotic and useless. Yota feeling lonely from the mocking and social isolation, this prompt Yota to run away as he can't take it anymore.
When his mother reunites with him, she was clearly very affectionate and hug him tight. Maybe she realized what she did was wrong during the time Yota was running away and she feels guilty about it. So when she met Yota again, she's holding Yota probably saying sorry to the boy.
That's why Yota was wide eyes, maybe he was baffled at the change.
Five, we got a shot of Toma's feet . He was standing over a ledge implied to be his forest hideout, probably the same forest at the very beginning of the video. It's heavily implied that his friends and family was ambushed, probably be because of involvement with bad people. And Toma is the only survivor and is on the run. Making both Toma and Yota have a similarity of bring two runaway.
And that with the scene of blood on Toma's body. It means he got blood on his body. Doesn't necessarily have him be a killer, but rather because of him that his people died aka got involved with bad people and endanger his friends.
Back to the scene, on one shot, Toma is standing over the ledge, the next he's gone. It can be assumed that's where he jumped and fell.
Six, the scene of upside down Toma falling upside down and Yota looking up. There's a shadow flash showing two of them with different emotion and hands.
It's a flash of memory the moment Toma fell midair.
In the memory, it was two of them having fun. Toma looks neutral or worried. While Yota clash his hand praying smiling crying.
The scene is a fun memory of Toma tossing Yota up in the air. Probably them having fun. It might have been too high, so Toma was trying to catch Yota. Yota was crying but with a big smile, his hand clasp because he was praying for a safe landing.
Last, the same scene, we can see Yota's necklace broke around them. This symbolized this "religion of loneliness" (the song name) they two share are now broken. It had ended with the death of Toma. "The religion of loneliness" performed by Yuu Miyashita is the best for me! From that day until today I still love it, and I always get excited like the first time :'). This song is incredible because it manages to convey a lot in the lyrics and the MV, in the choruses Yuu knew how to express the despair and fatigue of the character, there are also parts where he manages his voice a little softer and sweeter, the balance in the melody and the Notes in his voice make my heart pound! Yuu, he's a perfectionist with what he does, so I'm sure he sang like that because he wanted it! I really admire Miyashita Yuu's hard work and dedication! Wanted to post my personal theory here, love Yuu's covers!
I'm gonna refer to the boy as Yota and the man Tamo (just based off of what someone else said they're called). I think this video is about two people with mental issues confiding each other to the point it becomes toxic, egging each other on in a way until one of them finally dies (presumably suicide).
From the images in the beginning (bodies, Yamo, someone else crying), it's possible it could represent the things the two went through and how they're similar yet different. Two people with different causes for their mental illness, but mentally ill all the same.
_"I'm not even a little bit unhappy-I'm not so much of an idiot that I wouldn't even notice that-No, no, if you bottle up your feelings, you won't come to understand those plain pains or bitterness,"_
Here, Yota is saying that he's not so dumb as to realise he's feeling better. He knows that keeping these things inside instead of sorting them out won't get you anywhere. Could be him justifying telling Yamo how he feels, too.
_"No matter what I do, no matter how it turns out, I'll still be satisfied either way-All alone, the thoughts going around in my head all night seem like they're about to explode,"_
Again, Yato saying how anything he does will bring these thoughts to an end, justifying it by saying that it all ends out the same way. It also leads into the next lyrics:
_"These super-duper normal, average thoughts make me a self-styled crazy person (lool)-But I'm able to live a healthy life with this abnormal mind-All thanks to you,"_
The first part could pretty much be sarcasm on Yota's part, saying how these apparently "perfectly normal" thoughts really make him a crazy person. It could be what he's been told before (perhaps he has anxiety? Some kind of mental disorder that takes normal reaction/thoughts and putting them into overdrive-I've had personal experience with being told that everyone feels the same way as me, so maybe I'm just projecting). The last parts could be him saying that he can actually function with his issues after talking to Yamo, and just live normally.
_"I'm not lonely! Not lonely at all!-Even though I get that, this hunger for love won't disappear-I want to be fooled by you! I really want to be fooled by you!-Even knowing that this belief and love I have for you is a lie,-let's live clean and properly,"_
This could mean a few different things. I've seen a theory that this could refer to grooming (which is very plausible). I kind of think that way too, but mainly for the last half of the lyrics. The first half could be part of Yota venting about their strange relationship, saying that he isn't lonely yet he still yearns for more attention and love from others (I've also seen people saying he could be neglected, which is what I think as well. Perhaps him and his issues are being ignored so that's why he ran away?). The last part is also very interesting; Yota could be fully aware that he's being pretty much groomed, but he doesn't care as long as he has someone else that cares for him and acknowledges his problems, someone to relate to and rely on. A substitute for the help he needs but his parents won't give him.
_"I don't want to blame anyone else, but if I take on that much it'll ruin my health,"_
Now we're seeing Yamo's point of view. These few lines are simple: He doesn't want to blame someone else for what he's caused, but it'll cause him too much anguish to actually take on the responsibility. This could also be him venting to Yota, and is clearly over something he's caused himself (he might've killed/mortally wounded someone judging by the beginning pictures).
_"Both morning and night, twice a day-I'm hoping to be saved by that, like an idiot,"_
I'm going to do my best to put my interpretation of this into words so I'm sorry if it's hard to follow.
Essentially, he's hoping that blaming someone else will actually keep less blame on him and keep him from falling deeper into a hole. He knows he's done wrong, that it's his fault, yet he can't help but blame someone else and treat himself as the victim. Putting the blame on someone else won't stop him from becoming more depressed, because he knows that it's his fault in the end.
_"Saying that I hate this, that I don't want to do it anymore-But even still, I'm clinging to it before I realize-The seal of death is on my face, reading,-'It's still better than being dead',"_
Yamo realizes that he shouldn't be hanging onto Yota in the end. He shouldn't have to dump his issues onto a little boy, making his worse, just because he doesn't wanna be blamed for the terrible things he's done. He's grooming this boy, making him his own emotional dumping ground, using him. Yet he continues to do it. The seal of death part could refer to him being suicidal, already wanting to die but not wanting to. He justifies doing what he does because he and Yota have become co-dependent on each other. "It's better than being dead".
This is when their relationship is really becoming toxic (note that it's much worse from Yamo's eyes-He's an adult, and his desires and needs shouldn't be intertwined with someone still developing. But they are, and it's infecting them both).

I clearly have a lot to say on Yamo's lines lmao.
Anyways, this one shows a lot. The sudden swearing puts a lot of emphasis on this line, making it seem somewhat guilty. It stands out. Yamo still wants to die, Yota won't be a little boy forever, this relationship is going to end. Yota hasn't seen the horrors of the world just yet, his issues not faced with something like murder or absolute pain. He's still learning and has a chance at life. Yamo, though his own eyes, does not. The knife in the next scene could show how he wanted to just end it already, take away the relationship (after all, he's probably killed a man already), yet he still has an attachment to the boy. Perhaps he decides to not ruin another chance at life and instead take away one already past repair.
_"The views of an old man, an arbitrary opinion-they're both insane,"_
This could show how Yamo's views on things are extreme. He's killed a person, created a toxic relationship with a child, and believes that his life isn't worth anything. His views to any other person are absolutely insane, but not to him. Not to them. Not to someone with enough issues that these look like their only options in life.
_"I'm not honest! Not honest at all!-Even still, I can't join in with these normal days-I honestly just want to be swept away! I really want to be swept away!-But since I can't just ride the last train to a happy end-I'll start running with nothing more than the clothes I'm wearing,"_
The first line could be saying how Yamo isn't honest, especially not in his relationship with Yota. Yet, despite being a so-called liar, he can't put on a good enough mask to live a normal life. Then he talks about being swept away, which could refer to his suicidal thoughts or to him just wanting to stop existing (y'know, when you dont wanna die but don't wanna live either. You just want life to ignore you and stop kicking your ass). Then he says that it since he can't just take the easy way out, he'll just run away. That might mean him running away with Yota; How he doesn't want to leave him now so he'll take him with him.
_"I'm still, still chasing that simple, clear blue picture-I simply want to live without being scorned by that pure heartedness, but, but..."_
Thankfully something easier to interpret, Yamo saying that he just wants to be happy without morally good people saying he's a bad person.
Could also relate to him blaming others? Him saying that its everyone else's fault for his horrible mental state when in reality it's HIS fault for why he's like this.
_"Sleeping through the night and waking up in the morning, simply repeating that I must have had hopes and dreams, but I suddenly realized this was all that was left-But how long can I go on while dedicating everything I have to that one thing?"_
This is when Yamo seems to snap, spilling out a torrent of negativity onto Yota. Saying how he doesn't have any goals anymore, how he now sees that he has only one thing left, but how long can he depend on that one thing? The thing could be Yota, or perhaps his desire to hurt others. How long could he keep doing this until he has nothing more to give? Eventually you get tired of it and want to move on, but what then? What will keep him here once the thing's gone?
_"Ah, the world may as well laugh at this coward from the bottom of its heart-I'm not lonely! Not lonely at all, but...-R.I.P.-I'm not lonely! Not lonely at all! Even though I get that, this hunger for love won't disappear-I want to be fooled by you! I really want to be fooled by you! Even if the chain binding me to this life is getting weak-let's cheerfully fall together,"_
Yamo is slowly beginning to pull away from Yota, fully knowing that he will kill himself. He believes that Yota will die with him, like a suicide pact. Clearly, though, he didn't. Oddly sweet, Yamo believing he died with at least someone caring for him. Perhaps he gave him a choice as well: Keep living and grow up with a chance I threw away, or believe that you're in enough mental turmoil to die.
In summary, a mentally ill child meets a tormented man with a few deaths to his name. Their relationship is toxic, but the man still let's them both go in the end. The man has nothing to cling to now, so he commits suicide. The boy grows up, remembering the man that showed him it could be much, much worse. Not the most ideal way of figuring these things out, but that's how life plays out.
