Gloss black plastic interior trim, loss of horizontal character line, fake hood intake and blanked off exhaust. 1st Gen B9 far superior.
Agreed. Also, the infotainment system with touchscreen only is a failure. You should have an option, with the MMI selection ring still present. It's much safer IMHO, as it doesn't require you to lean forward to operate the system. I had a choice to wait for the lift version or order from the last cars in the pre-lift version and I chose the latter, mainly because of the infotainment (selection ring) and also because I like the front end better in the older version.
@@1979paranoidandroid... Plus the little cubby that was gained in place of the MMI wheel looks pretty useless.

Audi has lost their minds with these fake exhaust tips. I just don't understand it. Anyone who knows or cares about cars will not like such fake items. If they only have one exhaust, then use one tip. Four tips for one actual exhaust is deceptive and dishonest.

Fake exhaust and plastic every where... that's the "premium" brand. My Giulia Veloce Ti has real 2 exhaust, aluminium, carbon fiber and leather in the interior.
I owned the Giulia too! Loved that car! One of the best sport sedans in the world today. I agree with you, these Germans are losing their edge.
Audi has to return the Avant to the U.S, no question. Thank you for your work!

Audi has always made a great drivers car. The displays are always world class. The Avants are awesome. They would sell in smaller numbers here in the US. They are more sensible and make the car more 50-50 front to back. I agree the back reminds me of an A6. Still tasteful and classy.

Very nice looking Avant being a 3.0Tdi driver, I love the torque and how that can be deployed in everyday driving afterall where can you rev out the petrol engine and keep it on power. Powerful diesels are just effortless. Thomas is right, I am now thinking do I need the A6 as I think about replacing my current A6 3.0 Tdi Avant Black Edition as the S4 Avant and S6 Avant have the same power and torque. Another great review Thomas, lots to think about.

Another great vehicle from Audi. If it was available here in the States, I would buy it in a heartbeat. However if I had to choose between the Audi and the BMW 5 series wagon, I would take the BMW. Nice job again Thomas as usual.

Yes. Audi Avant's did sell here in the US in the past. They simply sold more sedans than wagons. So, they stopped selling them after the 2012 model year.
But, many people have asked Audi to bring them back, so it may happen some day in the near future...
What did Audi think about when adding the fake exhaust?

Thomas, how do you compare the handling of S4 with BMW M340i and general fun from drive, as these will be pretty close competitors?
Audi used to be my favorite German car manufacturer. They used to have subdued yet appealing designs. Their interiors used to have a nice balance of materials - leather, wood, and metal. This particular model still has that balance on the inside, but the front end of the car is just crazy. Lines for the sake of lines. Their other models are just too blend on the outside and inundated by a sea of screens and glossy black plastic inside.
So frustrating that we don’t even get the regular A4 wagon let alone S4 wagon!

I wanted to buy an S4 Avant but since it’s not available in the US, I settled for an S3 sedan until Audi came to their senses.
I live in Mexico Merida Yucatan. And here the A4 is only in sedan version. I love the Audi avant models. Maybe because I am Romanian.

I think they really improved the exterior with this facelift, especially the front and taillights. Agressive design overall, looks more "Audi" than the previous one, IMO.
Does this iteration of A4 series got the same lane keeping capability like the Q3/A6 series?

I like the sedan shape, I'm from Turkey. It is possible to make sedan A4 look like a sports car with some options, but Avant version would look like a family car no matter what option you get.

Looks and sounds impressive. I am looking to replace my A6 avant (its a little too big) which has the biturbo diesel with the new S4 diesel. I wait with interest to compare the response of this motor compared to my A6. Fake exhausts - sack the accountants - I would almost go for an RS4 just to avoid this sort of nonsense - especially if the petrol version is the only option we get in Oceania.

It would be nice to have the cup holders moved back. They are still right under the dash and that row of buttons. For us here in the states, our large drinks don't really fit well within them. The top of the cup hits the buttons and makes it sit crooked and not fully in the cupholder.

@@JuanGarcia-zq5tp That's exactly what I did. I previously owned three A6 Wagons and was hoping Audi would bring them back. I got tired of waiting and bought an A4 Allroad. The A6 wagons are much nicer IMO.
@@FrankCrow They also have the A6 Allroad now and the A6 Avant only in the RS6 trim. Of course good luck at over $100 grand.

Good review as usual, but Audi is really lost with design now. Side profile, especially on the sedan, looks really wrong now, like they forgot some old doors on a new model. Also the fake "quattro" vent on the front looks so wrong. The new style led drl they use on all new models look messy as well. No proper design direction, just seems they are desperate to change something. Better be boring but with quality (like they used to) than desperately trying to add "emotion" to the design or whatever they call it. They need a change of design direction.

Great facelift by Audi.A very practical car , when you're going somewhere with the family or by yourself.
Love the sound of that engine ,even though it's a 6 cylinder it sounds like a V-8.

Thinks I don't understand. In a Seat you flip without problems the seats from the back, but in an Audi you need long arms! They should have used same solution here!

Great review Thomas and a great car. Only if it would not be in all black interior. It goes to all producers not only for Audi. Why do they think that black interior is obligatory connected to sport version? Could it be at least bright roof as a general option? Or what do you think, let me know in the comments. :)

LEDs are standard but unfortunately they don’t look good at all...
I think this exterior design has no edge. That broken side character line is strange and those black outlined fake front corner vents are outright ugly. Also, the fake vent between the bonnet and front bumper is awful as well. Come to think of it, this car is full of fake design cues isn't it? Very American of you Audi. (That wasn't a complement.)

US owner of a 2011 A4 Avant here. Sadly, there’s still a stupid stigma of wagons and minivans only being for moms. I think that is changing, and if car companies marketed wagons as a sporty alternative to SUV’s they would have a lot more sales. Also, the performance versions of cars have almost never been available in wagon form. Take my Audi A4 Avant for example, there was no S4 wagon for 2011. It’s a failure in marketing and options more than lack of demand imo.
Bring the damn Avant back. The US is starving for something different the bloated crossovers.

Here in Canada, you can add the adaptive suspension on s4 as an option.

not sure, but the difference can only be some 0,5 cm, doesnt really matter. What really matters is that one of those is adaptive =)
Newer audi interiors would be getting better and better were it not for the loss of the control knob.

But Thomas :P If you have to fold the seats, you probably want to put something large in the trunk. You don't have to go around and fold the seats - just put the stuff in the trunk and the seats will fold if you unlatched them :P

haha kind of true in China at least，Thomas. In China everyone is shouting how beautiful the estate and the allroad is，however there are tons of sedan running in the city. In US it is not the case since the estate is not available and I barely heard few people prefer estate over sedan.
