    Dumble amplifiers are some of the most expensive and rare, custom-made amplifiers to exist - costing upwards of $200,000 (or more). Despite each Dumble being essentially a custom-made suit for the player it was made for, with no two sounding the same, there are certain "X Factors" of these amps the differentiate them from everything else. The Ultraphonix MKII is our attempt at capturing the essence of our experience with over a dozen Dumble Overdrive Special amplifier distilled into a guitar pedal. But, does it ACTUALLY sound like the real thing? Today, we're doing a direct comparison between our Ultraphonix Overdrive and two real-deal Dumble Overdrive Special amplifiers.
    Does the Ultraphonix hold up? Let us know what you hear in the comments below!

    Tons of clarity with the ultraphonix. Yeah, tough to compete with or beat a high-end tube amp, but ultimately, the point is to capture the essence, as we cannot always bring a large rig with us.

    Hi Mason, I’ve listen to several of these videos. And they must first say I appreciate your channel and I have enjoyed watching your interviews wiith Dann Huff, Michael Thompson, Dean Parks and several of the other session guitar players. Years ago I worked at Andy Brauer‘s and we did Cartrige for several of the musicians you’ve interviewed so I would run into them and sometimes be able to watch them on sessions. Having said all this, my boss, Andy, as well as Greg Bayles had more than a few Dumble amplifiers on hand. One of which I went all the way down to Newport Beach with a handful of cash from my boss to pick up and buy for him. Spent quite a bit of time playing through the amplifier. I have to just respectfully and honestly say that those Dumbels were magic. I honestly thought at that time if I owned one of these amplifiers, I would probably change my style more in the direction of the players you have mentioned. But again respectfully, I’m not hearing the same tone out of the amplifier is that you have there. I’d be willing to bet that they are great but I’m just wondering if it’s the way it’s dialed in. I think you were doing great work over there and I’m not meaning to sound offensive but that is just my honest assessment.

    I use the Ultraphonix a lot. To me, the sound is there, meaning I get exactly try what I want for me. BUT, you must say something about how your pedal(s) feel. That's where the real magic lies. Yes this pedal is sonically amazing and very broad spectrum-wise but again, it has a feel that is inspiring to me.

  • @jjdubois6101
    @jjdubois6101 Před měsícem +3

    The pedal sounds great, but it sounds like a drive with the guitar tone pot rolled down. Dumble amps do that weird thing where they are dark but still have bite.

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  Před měsícem +1

      Interesting. I feel like the pedal sounds a bit more clear than the amps, especially 195 comparatively is much darker and rounder on the low-end.

  • @lurkerlid
    @lurkerlid Před měsícem +2

    So...the Ultraphonix sounds nothing like an Overdrive Special. That is what this is supposed to be showing, I presume. The ODS examples do show why Hermida modified a Tubescreamer to make the Zendrive though.

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  Před měsícem +3

      I disagree, as someone that's been around these amps a lot and got to understand their sonic qualities, gain structure, and feel - as I said in the video - the relationship that a good Marshall In-A-Box has to a Marshall, the Ultraphonix has to a Dumble. We fully acknowledge, and do so in the video, that no pedal can replace an amp. I think you could hear that the differences between the two Dumble's weren't understated. Again, Dumbles are like a custom made suit, there are common elements in all of them based on the designer, but the identiy of each amp is unique. In our pedal, we're trying to normalize a baseline across this type of overdrive sound. As it relates to the Zendrive, it's a cool pedal, iconic even, but was never designed with a real Dumble as a reference - just the idea of a Dumble. At the time it was made, my recollection was that Alf voiced it based on what he heard on a Robben Ford record. Ironically, the Dumble that Robben used on his biggest records was rented, not the Dumble amps he would eventually own. So even if Alf had access to Robben's personal Dumble's at the time of inception of the Zendrive (for a reference point), they'd still be dissimilar to what's his most famous songs and records that use Dumble amps. Even Robben doesn't see a Zendrive as an alternative to a Dumble, just as a great sounding overdrive that works well into a Dumble and a variety of clean amp pedal platforms.

  • @Davimre
    @Davimre Před měsícem +3

    Definitely some differences in the gain structure, but most of the differences I’m hearing are coming from the differences in the speakers.

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  Před měsícem +1

      Speakers, yes, we've been trying to record them all the same way, albeit, one was recorded with an SM7B and AEA Ribbon, where the others were with an Ohma Ribbon and SM57 - but the "stickiness" of the notes are there, again I think it shows how different, even within the same model, any two ODS' might sound from each other, no even considering the pedal.

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  Před měsícem +1

      I didn't think that was the case here, I feel like the amps felt more squishy to my ear. I think it's hard to demonstrate a "feel" of something through video, but I would say even the two Dumble amps have a pretty different sound even though they are the same model (ODS). I think in the sustained note, you can hear that same second (even) harmonics coming through a lot even with it's not real dirty.

      I think the gain structure on one of the amps was different. More aggressive. I think the pedal was closer to ODS #022. Also speakers have a lot to do with it. One Dumble had an EV, the other had Jensens, and the Deluxe Reverb had a V30. We did use the same mics on two of the examples, but one had an AEA Ribbon and SM7B instead of the Omha Ribbon and SM57. Those also have some differences. However, the idea here is 'essence of' so to speak.

      It has similarities, just as a Zendrive has origins in the Tube Screamer, so does this pedal. If you're reductive enough you can point to origins in just about every currently made pedal to something else that was done before. There are no original analog overdrive circuits at this point in the world of pedals as there are only so many ways to create distortion.

      It was the most "immediate" it was really designed around a Telecaster so in this example, we're not exactly using the ideal guitar for its voicing. It's still a great amp, but maybe not as tuned for humbuckers as some of the others.
