Asteroid Cluster Types Guide! (ONI: Spaced Out!)

- I have about 1600 hours of experience playing Oxygen Not Included and thought it would be a good idea to share some of my thoughts on all of the different starting asteroid cluster options available now that the Spaced Out DLC has been out for a while and I've had experience playing most of them. While some options are more difficult than others, all of them offer you some interesting and different gameplay choices that will really shape how your colonies develop in the early, mid, and late game. And there are some very silly things you can do by combining the World Traits with these asteroid types! I'm planning on making a video about World Traits next as a follow-up to this. Quick comment! The Frozen Forest asteroid has large amounts of Rust but not a lot of Salt due to the unique cold Rust biome variant! You'll either want to grab this from a Salt Water or Cool Salt Slush Geyser, or find Salt on the Radioactive Ocean asteroid if you plan on using Rust Deoxidisers.
in my opinion cold rust biomes are the most obscure thing in the entire game. a lot of people i asked don't even know ethanol spawns naturally in it! nosh beans and dasha vines are also really forgettable, so no wonder.

For now, I only had: "Worked easily" or "Struggle + fail", now seeing my start selections on the video, I understand why.
Like not getting thimble reed and having a hard time getting into rockets.

Thanks for this. I’m pretty new to the game and finding it very challenging. Up to 700 cycles. I started Classic with Smellazon as my secondary teleport base. Love Pug Slugs, but I discovered the danger Sponge Slugs can do to your pipes and the mess they make if you kill them. I’m also unclear how to manage the Beeta Hives. To date I just leave them be and let them do all the uranium enriching. I have an infinite storage room of CO2 nearby if I need it.
I’m still to do anything with the rust. The polluted dirt and mud plus deodorisers create so much oxygen, I’m pumping that out into infinite storage too. So not sure it’s worth doing anything with the rust for now. Ship it elsewhere?
I’m wondering whether on some starts it might be best to switch the main base to the teleported one if temp etc makes living easier.
This game Is a real FIFO… or in my case a TIFO? For now.
I also discovered CO2 rockets can completely refuel on the gas trapped if you launch from the bottom of a long rocket tunnel with a steel pump a few tiles below. It overheats but 5kg steel can fix it.
Yeah this game is very challenging to get into but very rewarding. I haven't actually done a huge amount of stuff with Beetas yet. And yeah ditching the main asteroid for the secondary can sometimes be the right play, say for example you're playing the Flipped Asteroid and you have no water source but there's something available at the Desolands.
I'm confused. Because I have played this game. But the start menu has always confused me completely. I am trying to choose whichever most fits the SO expansion that I paid for. When I choose survival -> spaced out. This is where all the confusion is. Because there's different starting choices with four possible clusters among them. But I have on clue what cluster even means. And that's how I even ended up finding this video. But I didn't notice if it explained it.
So, the Spaced Out DLC adds the ability to set up colonies on multiple planets, among other things. You can activate and deactivate the DLC in the main menu as you wish. If you have Spaced Out activated, when you start a new game, you'll have three options. Classic, Spaced Out, and The Lab. Classic has one very big asteroid and some smaller asteroids and is the most like the base game. Spaced Out has between 3-5 medium sized planets instead of one big one, with the smaller outer asteroids still being there. The Lab is just custom non-random maps. So if you have Spaced Out activated, you'll get all of the expansion features regardless of which map style you pick. Hope that answers your question.
@@erisia_gaming Thank you. It explains some, but doesn't really answer the question which was in regards to the Spaced Out option. And the meaning of "clusters". So I am guessing what you're choosing is basically a cluster. But with the moonlet, it gives options of where to start in that cluster.

For asteroid starts that LACK Hatches as a common critter, aren't you ALWAYS guaranteed ONE buried very near your Print pod at start? So if you either get a Rancher dupe from the pod, or set one of the starters to be a rancher, aren't you at VERY LEAST guaranteed the ability to ranch Hatches no matter the start?
Yes, most starts will have a buried hatch to the left. Swamp starts are the exception.
For someone who played Oni before the Space Out was released in EA and who was waiting at least the v1.0+, What Cluster would you recommend to him to start a new colonies and enjoy the new Space out features and addition to the game, like critters, plants, materials, etc ?
Important info, he did play a lot but never reach the end game or high end game, maybe around cycle 100 or 150 or so.
He played on Terra of course but also verdante and arboria, but just some early game colonies on Rime and Oceania and never tried the others
He have a lot of knowledge about the game, reading wikis and reddit discussion about some setups etc, a very nerdy approach if I can say, rather than experiment it first (like me fact XD).
I don't really know what would be the best, before he didn't have enough time but he have it now and want to go deeper in what Oni have to offer.
Ho and important, he never reach any rocketry features, building, etc
I know that to jump in space out features right from the start, Quagmiris is a solid choice, or even Moonlet maybe ?
On an other side I was thinking about Folia cluster because he didn't play so much after the forest biome update

I would suggest either Squelchy, Volcanea, or Badlands. These asteroids all have the new Wastelands biome so your friend can have a look at Sweetles and Grubgrubs. Squelchy has the fun Polluted Dirt management that is somewhat new, Volcanea is relatively standard but has the add thrill of the occasional Magma leak, and Badlands has loads of refined Iron to make industrializing faster provided you get some good diggers. That way he can also approach the new rocket content at his leisure on the Classic style starts rather than being rushed into it without experience. Quagmiris would also be a good option for slightly more emphasis on early rocket travel.

Just a little feedback to say that your help was really appreciated by my friend, he wasn't really confident about Volcanea but he gave it a shot and he really was pleasantly surprised, that became that second Main colony when he want to play chill, or when he need something less serious and experiment things.
