Genuine question: I thought you were in Canada, so if it is a service that is only available in the United States, how have you been able to use it to vouch for it and its quality? It seems like a company I would be interested in, and I trust your integrity, but I am confused.

My dad was an alcoholic when my mom became pregnant with me. Coming from an extremely traditional family, when I was born as the first girl in the family linage for three generations, my mom gave my dad an ultimatum: Get sober or get lost.
He's been sober for 30 years and 6 months today because that is my exact age. He was my primary caretaker and took paternal leave for 52 weeks, then became a homemaker for 3 years, until it was finally time to put me in kindergarden 🥰

Sobriety is wonderful, but can sound really daunting. Drinking less is an option for some folks, and as someone who successfully cut back from drinking almost a bottle of wine a night to a couple drinks a month, these are my tips.
What Abby's tips don't really reflect is the emotional component that comes with drinking. When I realized I didn't want to keep drinking the way I did, I started data collecting, and became curious about myself, almost like a series of experiments. I asked myself this when the desire came up: What do I need right now? Like, really, what does my heart need? What am I hoping drinking will replace? At the time I was in a toxic relationship, and I used alcohol as a way to feel like I had "at least something" for myself. I would journal (mostly video journals so I could talk it out and watch later) about what I needed. I would ask myself if I could have a wizard in front of me that could grant anything in exchange for alcohol, what would that be? It really made me realize how I was taking on too much and not asserting what I needed. I would also journal just as much what I felt the next day, whether I decided to drink or not. If I felt like crap, I would say everything that came up, and it helped me remember those feelings later. If I decided not to drink, I would talk about how VERY proud of myself I was. I mean really, I vividly remember the first day I really challenged myself to ask for what I needed instead of drinking, and the elation I felt the next day was something I continued to crave. I never committed to the whole "from now on to eternity, I vow to never have another drop" because that felt too daunting. I just focused on how I felt that day. Since I really paid attention to and documented all these feelings, I would be able to instantaneously play out what an evening of a bottle of wine and the morning hangover would be like, and it was easier to decide nah I don't want to go through all that. I want to make sure I get what I need, what I truly need. Whether it's help with family stuff, getting some alone time to rest, or connecting with someone I care about.
Another massive aspect to alcohol is that for some people, it is the only way they feel like they can connect with someone, and feel a genuine closeness. Alcohol can be really bonding and that isn't talked about a whole lot. If you're with a group of people you've experienced this with, it can feel like a rejection to them if you deny alcohol, because you're saying no to the bonding aspect of drinking. This is why, for me, I decide to avoid events where this is a big part of it. That's what gets me to drink even more, when I feel like I'm bonding with a person that I have been wanting to have that with. The reason you don't want this is because a lot of the time, it isn't really bonding, especially if someone doesn't remember, but it also comes at too big of an expense to your physical and mental health to make that method of bonding happen. I decided I'm going to work on my true vulnerability to create real bonding without alcohol, and this has helped so much. I do second Abby's suggestion of coming up with activities that do not involve drinking. I'm still working on socializing without alcohol myself since being mostly alcohol-free can be a bit lonely at first, but it's a process.
I didn't drink for about five or six months until I felt ready to slowly reintroduced it back into my life, this time in an intentional way. I do still have alcohol on occasion, but it's in pretty specific circumstances, and it isn't a thing I most look forward to anymore. I don't have it at home as one of my ways of keeping consumption low. Overall I feel much more in control and just so much.... better. Oh and let me tell you about alcohol and anxiety!! I swear, booze gives you this initial impression it will make it go away but in reality it makes it SO much worse. That was one of the first things I noticed after the improved sleep, was diminished anxiety.
For anyone reading this who is struggling, you are worthy, you are deserving, and you are capable. Just start by being curious about gathering data about yourself and I believe you will be inspired by your own findings. Good luck!

I’m happy to hear this has been helpful 😊 I can also relate to the toxic job pushing the want to drink, I’ve been there! You realize you spend all your time just looking forward to the moment you’re off to have that first drink, because it’s the only time you can forget the day and feel content for once. I think changing your job will help! Even though you’re unemployed, it’s a good time to recalibrate what predictable, routine calmness should feel like 😌

To those who don’t experience euphoria after they quit drinking: quitting is hard. For me, quitting sucked. It was like going through a bad breakup with the love of my life. I didn’t feel great and the first year sober sucked. I thought about drinking every day and had drinking dreams. Fortunately, I had a wonderful support system of people who were tough, loving, and could relate. Hang in there. Some days are better than others.

This is my story too. Unfortunately my TTC journey hasn't been easy, so haven't gotten successfully pregnant yet (2 miscarriages within 6 months)- but abstaining from alcohol is harder and not as hard as I thought at the same time. It's a little ridiculous the amount of pressure some people put on you for drinking. It's like people are offended that you don't drink with them for certain events or even if you're just bored hanging around the house with them. But at the same time, I'm having a fairly easy time saying no and not feel like I'm missing out that much.
I also feel pretty good mentally and physically having not drank for awhile. It reminded me that I really don't enjoy drinking or getting drunk. It's never been my favorite bc I don't like not feeling in control of myself, nor do I like the sickly feeling you get after passing the 'buzzed' point. Not even just like nausea from going too far, but even before then you just don't feel great.

I’m so happy whenever anyone achieves sobriety, but when she says “I drank a normal amount” she most likely did not. It’s the norm for addicts or any kind to underestimate and additionally underreport their usage. So I think the reason she had such dramatic results is exactly because she was drinking SO much. I still am glad she is sharing this so that others with a problem can see this and maybe relate.

Weight loss has been shockingly easy, I can eat to satiety, and have so much energy. Additionally, my binge eating tendencies have gone from daily to about once ever 2 weeks because I'm actually in touch with my hunger cues. I knew a guy who was a heavy drinker 20+ years ago. He lost 30 lbs. simply by quitting drinking. He didn't change his diet at all. A housekeeping fee of 20$ an hour is a standard price for my small town but when working at a large cleaning company in a big town I was paid 9$ an hour and everyone would lose lots of weight working bc the long hours and lack of time for meals/money to buy food.

Hey there, I can relate to this - I don’t struggle with alcohol but I do struggle a lot with other things and wonder why can’t I just stop - but ultimately usually your mind is protecting you from something, maybe from facing difficult emotions, the past, anxiety etc? So if you aren’t getting help or seeking out what’s happening underneath, it would be really hard to ‘just stop’ when it’s got a function and a purpose even if it’s not helpful for you. Idk just something to think about. And I realise with alcohol there is the withdrawal aspect too and your body making it harder to stop. You’re not a failure, maybe you just need some extra support with underlying things? Amanda x

But I just love the reasonable and realistic weekly recommendation. This allows for a social drink with the bestie and for me this would be more like once a month but I love knowing that having 2 glasses of wine 🍷 won’t be as harmful. I love stepping away from the black and white mentality. Btw, I’m a dietetics student 😅

As a mental health care worker, I urge anyone who is thinking about getting sober to not be afraid to ask for help. Support systems and sources of encouragement are so essential to the journey. The stigma around alcohol abuse can make those wishing to pursue sobriety feel like they have nobody to turn to. There are other people who have gone through
the sobriety journey and would love to talk about it, it will just take some time to find them.

I'm not fully sober but have cut back to about three drinks max a week and have kept that up for about two years now. It really feels so good, my sleep has improved so much, it's helped me sustainably lose 15 kg and when I do drink something with alcohol it's because I like it and not because I feel I need to to relax. The less you drink the less enticing it becomes. To everyone trying to stop or cut back: you're doing great and you can do it! What really worked for me was telling everyone around me that I was trying to cut back and my loved ones really helped by not offering alcohol anymore and not always bringing alcohol to every gathering. Makes it so much easier.

I thought that I was already okay because I've been into fitness for 40 years. Ironically, I started drinking over 40 years ago. Although I had put my heavy party drinking behind in my early 30s when I got married, my weekly wine drinking habit was disturbing my sleep, making me dehydrated and giving me anxiety. I decided after having my last glass of wine last December 30, 2024 that I would do Dry January. I felt so good after the alcohol break that I just kept it going.

I want to make the medical part of my mental health a priority for 2023 and a big part of that is cutting out alcohol. For health reasons, I had to completely eliminate alcohol for several months. It was a revelation how much harm drinking was doing to my physical and mental well-being. Weight loss is the least of many benefits. Giving up alcohol has had a significant positive impact on my fight against depression and anxiety. It also allowed me to verify several of my relationships that would not have survived without partying together. The social pressure to drink is unfortunately still very much alive. Now I choose more meaningful connections and have built a whole system of better ways to get dopamine than drinking. Definitely no regrets here! Congratulations to everyone who has chosen sobriety and a more conscious approach to alcohol!

Before this I would not drink or just drink very little at specific events once a year. I made a commitment to cut down on alcohol almost two years ago, when I moved from getting anxiety hangovers to actually feeling anxiety while I was still on the night out. Since then I've had four drinks in total (a glass of wine at my friend's wedding, two cocktails when I was in London, and a pint of cider when out with an old friend). I'm getting much better at just saying 'no thanks, I don't drink', although it still amazes me how much it annoys some people!! It says much more about their relationship with alcohol than it does about mine. My top tip in bars is to ask for your soft drink in the same type of glass as they use for spirit and mixer, so if people want to assume you have vodka in your cola or orange juice then that's on them. If you're heading into a sober holiday season, stay strong and remember why you are doing this (and enjoy feeling smug when you're fresh as a daisy and everyone else is 'hanging out their arse' as we say in Scotland 😂

Careful!! I worked in an ICU with pts who stopped drinking and went through the DT’s which is very dangerous and life threatening. These are people who generally treat their mental health issues with alcohol. Also they are primarily men. There is an interesting study that talks about the number of middle aged men with alcoholism who have sexual trauma from their youth. The study came out prepandemic.

@AbbeySharp if your marriage is in trouble, see a marriage counselor, not a house cleaner.

I don’t drink much because usually it trigger my migraines and also I just never get buzzed, and I tell people this over and over and they still look at me like that’s not an excuse. As a society we need to normalize NOT drinking being okay.

Unfortunately I did not experience weight loss when I stopped drinking two years ago. I gained 30 pounds around 3.5 years ago.
But I did come out of a 2 year severe depressive state, was even able to come off my antidepressants (with guidance from a psychiatrist) it’s like you wake up and feel and experience joy. Unreal how toxic alcohol is.

It's not for everyone, but non-alcoholic beer has really been helpful to me in social situations. I don't have to answer questions about why I'm not drinking and, as Abbey said, having something in my hand or in front of me on the table draws less attention. NA beer has come a long way and I love that bars and breweries around where I live will pour it into a glass for me and no one is the wiser!

I have a really hard time believing her quitting alcohol made her lose that much that fast. I’ve watched her for years and it happened in a matter of weeks. I don’t think there is a lot of honesty going on and it sets people up to think if they quit drinking they are going to drop a ton of weight like she has. Absolutely it’s great she quit drinking but I wish people were more transparent about the weight loss piece. It’s really deceptive.

It probably depends on how much she was drinking. Now she doesn’t have all that excess calories. I lost a lot of weight in the beginning of my weight loss journey once I started working on my hormonal issues.

I’m not saying that she’s being truthful because I don’t know. But I’ve recently lost 50lbs in the last year and no one noticed until I got to the 40lb mark so a lot of people thought that I just all of a sudden lost a ton of weight, when in reality it took me 8mos

It depends on what she was drinking and how often. She mentioned margaritas and sangrias, which have higher amounts of sugar and the latter has sometimes double the calories as margaritas. She did state she changed her diet and increased her activity level which also helps. One thing that wasn't very mentioned by her is the calories she was most likely intaking while drinking alcohol. Most people who are drinking margaritas are doing so at restaurants so they are usually eating something during the drinking. Removing the margarita from the diet may also remove the need to eat unnecessary calories. Abby also mentioned inflammation which is very common with heavy alcohol usage. Some people just quit drinking makes them look thinner as the puffiness dissipates. Someone else commented, but bodies are different. Someone who is 6'0, 370lbs, losing 20lbs will not show. A smaller person, losing 20lbs is easier to spot.

i disdain alcohol. i loathe the taste and the feeling. i don’t care if others drink, but i hate being pressured into “oh just a taste.” i’m someone who has grown up in a family of heavy heavy drinkers on both sides, babysat the drunk friends in college, and had to clean up after everyone’s drinking. i never had a desire to drink or be drunk (emetophobes rise up) and it’s so fascinating to see other people deal with their relationships with alcohol.
