    I know some people don’t like Carolyn as a red herring but I think it’s the best of both worlds. It shows Carolyn as a character while hiding the winner Yam Yam without sandbagging him in the edit, the alternative to this is giving both of them a bad edit.

      For sure, it let's the story play out through the tika lens through the latter half of the season with it giving hints from the beginning that they would make it all to the final episode, I liked Carolyn personally and thought she played a very solid game in my opinion a better one then heidi, Hiedi's fire making skills were unmatched though...

    Iconic underrated moment- Frannie picking the moms for the letter reward, and having others call it out as a game move. Also, I liked pretty much all of Soka, especially Danny and Claire early on, and I as much as I was so annoyed with her and her magic wand, Jaime was good casting and I can't deny it. I agree with the 90 minutes. I think the best example of 90 minutes being good is with RuPauls Drag Race. This last season, they cut it down to 60 minutes for half the season. It made this season struggle, because part of what made the show so great was falling in love with the people on screen. That way when they left, you felt so connected to each of them. When it returned to the 90 minutes, the show flourished again as we got learn more of the people, how they interact, and their lives. I think this will be good for the show. We will have more time with the castaways, and love them more.

After getting back into Survivor earlier this year, I decided to get back into the live shows and I’m glad I did. Ugh. This season has my heart based on the cast. Yam, Carolyn, and Carson were everything. Yam was an excellent social player, a hoot every time he was on screen, and a worthy winner who was hiding in plain sight the whole time, kinda like Maryanne. Carolyn is an actual game changer, as described very well by Frannie multiple times. Carson was a great final boss, and I love how he played off both of the other two as straight man. I love that they were in the drivers seat in addition to being excellent characters. Probably the new most iconic small alliance to make it really far together, surpassing the Foa Foa Four, Aitu 4, and Jalapao 3. Many others in the cast were a delight as well. Frannie & Matt and Danny too. Jamie with her unfailing smile. I liked rooting against Josh as a villain, his boot gave Dom vs Chris vibes. The game twists were forgettable but this cast, man, best of the Inspo era no doubt

    This season was amazing, and I think that’s in large part because of the edit (and also the contestants). The editors did a great job making me feel like each player was actually playing and making moves of their own and not just sitting along for the ride. (Again, that has a lot to do with the players themselves too - really great cast this season.) Basically everyone in the final half of the season I felt like had a solid chance of winning the game. Unlike last season, where I was genuinely surprised that the jury thought Gabler was doing enough in the game to deserve the win. Definitely my favorite season out of the last 4. So many new iconic players!

    I think the cast was actually the reason the random idols/fake idols/advantages felt so out of place. This cast wasn’t waiting for these things to come to them, and they didn’t change their whole strategy based on them. They wanted to play an emotional and social game, and those advantages just didn’t play into that. It was a wonderful season because the way they played was so fresh compared to past seasons, and I don’t think there was any way production could have planned for it

    I truly love your admission that Fandom sometimes creates negative ecochambers. Of course, we can argue the role of fans in relation to their interests and how valuable their opinions are or aren't, that's all debatable, but in recent years I've become very disillusioned with fandoms for that reason. I'm a creative, I've worked on stuff you've probably seen, I've been in the room when decisions were made and contrary to popular belief we don't talk for 5 minutes and go to lunch. It's a process with 50 layers of mandates, considerations, suits to appease, fans to appease, reaching as wide a demo as possible...it's A LOT and it's super easy to be a fan and critique it all without even thinking about all that mess. And all the negativity piles up and people begin to hold themselves as some true authority over it all, even above the people who made it all happen, little regard for any other voices, and it's just gross.
    I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's a fine line between being a fan with opinions and desires and being an insufferable mouthpiece and I'm truly glad you actively avoided becoming the latter. Granted, I don't think you're near that level of rabid Fandom, but it's cool to see you're cognizant of falling into that trap. You rule, man!

    I thought it was definitely the most entertaining of the new era seasons but the gameplay just hasn’t really done it for me in the new era. None of the winners from 41-44 have had a true winners game such as Tony, Parvati or Kim. It’s the 26 days.
    The casts in the new era have been the worst. Yes there are some great finds such as Shan, Cody, Caroline and Yam but Jesse Tanenbaum is really struggling delivering great casts. It’s such a shame they fired Lynn Spillman.
    I think they’re making a big mistake not adding more days for 45 and 46 but getting more airtime. An extra day per episode means much more time for gameplay and for things to change.
    My personal wish is for them to bring back the individual final tribal jury questions. The open forum just takes way too long. I enjoy seeing each player ask one question they have thought about asking. It’s so personal. Anyway 44 had some good moments and delivered some potential returnee players

  • @noodles24601
    @noodles24601 Pƙed rokem +1

    I had so many people I liked throughout the season, favorites on every tribe. I mean towards the end Tika definitely got more than their share, I love every one of that trio and would've been happy to see any of them win (and legitimately think any of them could've won in different circumstances), but I also was really rooting for Frannie and Matthew at different points. And the suspense towards the end was immense, I don't know if I just couldn't dissect the edit or what but I could see a path to victory for most players like halfway through the merge on and going into that final tribal felt like any one of them could have gotten it (though after I definitely would've voted for Yam Yam too). And when it comes to Yam Yam and Carolyn, while some of it was of course genuine, playing up the strife and bickering between them to make people think their alliance wasn't as strong as it was was honestly genius social play. It added such confusion and made it so much harder for anyone to organize opposition to their steady march towards the end, it was chaos done very right. I've gotta think that's a big part of why they weren't voted against enough in the final 7 or 6, people just did not expect that alliance to hold in the endgame, heck I didn't expect it to hold in the endgame. One of the basic rules of survivor is if you've played a good, close game with someone else, you generally don't take them to the end with you so you can take all the credit for your group (unless you're certain you can beat them a la JT with Stephen, but obviously that's not true for everyone and you only need 1 to flip sometimes). Honestly it was kinda nice to see such a solid group make it so far in the game together, and it fit so well with the incredibly positive vibes of the season. There really weren't any "villains" and everyone seemed to get along really well on a personal level. It definitely gave the season a unique flavor to me that made it stand out in a really positive way. I think some production/structural critiques are fair, but overall I think this was an incredible season with a top tier cast and the advantages and stuff didn't really ruin or sour it for me in any significant way (though I do wish Heidi had used the steal a vote to go after a Ratu instead of Yam Yam. I get it definitely seemed like the safer move, and she didn't like the duo of Matt and Frannie, but by that point sparing the feelings of Ratu seemed pointless, it was too early to start worrying about the threats in her own alliance, and if she had managed to get one of them out it would've looked like a huge move and could've changed a lot potentially, at the very least strengthening her jury case).

    This is one of the few seasons where i strangely didnt find myself rooting for any one person in particular, but in a good way! The lack of investment i felt in a particular person made me far more invested in the cast as one single unit. Each episode felt like a self contained season, by the time we hit like final 8 i could see myself being narratively satisfied with anyone remaining coming away woth the win. My one complaint is it feels like halfway through the season yhey suddenly started giving Danny a villain edit just cause they needed drama or something? I dunno i really liked early season danny so his sudden yonal shift was VERY jarring for me. But overall this was an incredibly fun season to watch, this got me back after i missed 42 and 43, and im happy to finally feel invested again

    It's hard to be positive on a season that has caused my brother to finally say he doesn't need to watch anymore Survivor. This show brought my brother and I closer together. It was a huge part of our relationship with our dad and great grandparents. But despite over ten years of watching every episode the night it aired, the past four seasons have shown him, and others, enough to know that this new age of Survivor isn't what they're willing to put their time and effort into. I'm inclined to agree with them but I will give them 45 to bring me back. If not, then I'll just go back and watch old episodes instead.

    Hey Peridiam, you should make a video about the unintended consequences of having a top 3: the fact that it now gives the jury to not only award the first place prize, but also the second place prize.
    There have been some instances in the past of jury members strategically voting besides the winner to award money to the second place, or deprive the third finalist of a split pot.
    Reed did this in San Juan del Sur, voting for Jaclyn to win instead of Natalie, to deprive Missy of a tied 2nd place finish. It's also suspected that Danny voted for Deshawn in survivor 42 to make sure Xander wouldn't touch a penny, after alienating the jury with his misreads.
    It could also be talked about these stray votes awarding unpopular people money, like when Ralph voted for Phillip to win Redemption Island, awarding him 100K because he was too salty to vote for Boston Rob.
    Either way, good content, thanks for your videos!

    This season is still leaving my head scratching about the winner, much like what happened with 43. However, while I ended up agreeing Gabler played the best game and that Cassidy was not robbed, I still didn’t love him being the winner or how Cassidy was treated during that final tribal.
    For 44, it’s different because to me both Yam Yam and Carolyn would be very good winners, but it’s hard not to be bummed that Carolyn received no votes given how similar her resume was to Yam Yam’s and how she seemed to be a greater driving force of the moves in the game by comparison. Yam Yam seemingly made better social connections and I get that is a valid strategy for winning but idk, the jury not giving Carolyn any votes still surprises me a week after the finale aired. I still enjoyed the season a lot overall, but much like with 43 I will need time to process the final outcome of the season!

    8/10 Season!
    44 has the advantage of finishing STRONG. The last 6ish episodes were the best stretch of Survivor to watch maybe since DvG.
    Unfortunately I think it was only that good because all the twists were out of the game by Final 9 and all they had left to film was this REALLY fun group of characters. I think Jeff WANTS the show to feel more like the pre/early merge episodes and that’s where he misses the fun of having interesting people navigate this game however they see fit. Production tries to script outcomes on a show that thrives on the players determining how the game is played. This season the players drove the final result and it led to the best season of the “new era!”
    Things to adjust:
    -If you’re going to have the journeys. The players MUST have agency of if they want to risk their vote. Forcing them to risk it takes all the intrigue out of this segment. What if a player decides their optimal move is ALWAYS playing safe?
    -I love some of the casting choices of the new era. But it feels like we’ve had a couple of casts full of overachievers. We need people who didn’t go to college. Maybe are lower on the socioeconomic ladder. People like Dreamz or Sugar, and the Blue Collar folks who may not be overachievers in life, but could take advantage of the opportunity Survivor brings! People with less education or money will play very differently from upper-middle class super fans.
    -if 26 days is the standard now (I hope we get 39 days back SOMEDAY) we need to go back to 16 players on two tribes. It’ll allow for less one day voting cycles, and the three tribe format has lost its luster.
    Just my thoughts. Happy to have a truly solid season to remind me why I keep coming back to the show!

Just due to life getting extra busy and various other commitments, I found myself unable to watch the show live for about half of the episodes. I also got to watch most of them with my boyfriend who had never seen the show before so I got to get a more casual opinion. I really liked the cast and loved the Tika 3, especially Carolyn. The premerge was fine albeit a bit rocky
but the post merge that gave us several rounds of just a straightforward vote was a such a breath of fresh air. The social bonds and character moments are what I love most about this show, and this season gave us a lot of those, especially compared to other recent seasons. I think one thing that deserves praise in the new era is casting. They’re taking risks; never before have we had a Shan, Mary Anne, a Jesse or a Carolyn. It’s just the probst side of twists and advantages that don’t allow these unique players to just play. The more different type of people cast the more different thought processes will be playing the game
    After the final 10, when the players just played, was great! Because the cast was great. They just need to keep up with the great casting and come up with more contructive twists and advantages (which aren’t going away)

    I think the Tocantins comp is spot on. You essentially had a tight 3 versus a larger group after the evac, same as 44 but there was something different here. Maybe it was that feeling of I've already seen this and Carolyn just rubbed me the wrong way the whole season. I could probably deal with the histrionics and screaming during the challenges but she's maybe the worst challenge person to every play the game and it was incredibly unenjoyable when everyone is fawning over her and she was a total goat. I think when people step away from this season and get away from the recency bias, it is going to be bottom 15-25% of all seasons. It has the elements of Tocantins, with a little Matsing and Pagong mixed in, but there really wasn't any spectacular game play. Danny's idol play was probably the flashiest play, but at the end of the day this season could have been so much better strategically. It was just straight forward vote offs because Soka and Ratu couldn't help but target each other. It all kind of hinged around the uninspiring game play of Heidi if she uses the control a vote advantage to make Jamie vote for Heidi it makes the game more interesting or if at final 6 she just plays her idol for herself, teams up with Heidi and Lauren it would have forced Tika to either vote out Carolyn or Yam Yam and Carson would have went to rocks. But there was just never any conflict at all this season and even the Tika 3 never had to vote against each other. What made Tocantins good was the conflict at the end when they voted Taj out, and they were forced to see where the loyalties lied and just how far they were willing to go. Would have been better if Yam had to vote Carson out to win. After this season I can no longer defend final 4 fire making either, it has to go. It makes the final immunity you can win basically useless and virtually no one goes on to win the game after winning it, well at least anyone not named Chris.

  • @joseedil
    @joseedil Pƙed rokem

    I like this season, I actually like twists, the birdcage was pretty entertaining, not being able to play it safe on the first island trip was ok bc the whole tribe had to discuss about who goes, not going is the safe-play. The 1-person tribe swap with the idols washing going to blown up tribes but it also was a reshuffle, without the idol, there is no way to do a 1-person swap without tanking that person’s game and it is nice to have some variety in terms of tribe swaps. It is true that those twists put the players in very contrived situations and are a hit or miss, but they avoid a pre-merge where we know ahead of time which person is the next boot every single week (Claire boot was veeery predictable and boring). The twists are never Gina make the season (and in 41 I do think they kinda broke it by taking to much airtime bc of explanations). Other than that, 44 is my favorite season from the ones I watched while it aired, the Jamie storyline is hilarious, the Tika 3 gameplay in the merge is amazing (the Danny boot was my favorite to watch), Yam Yam and Carolyn are great and I just love Carson (but I just identify with him a lot, so I’m biased) and the ending is VERY satisfying. It has all the elements of a great season of reality TV. To finish, I think people are going way too hard on new era survivor, there is a learning curve, but 44 and 42 actually work pretty well for me and I believe the move to 90 minutes will solve the biggest issue in new era that is when there is too much advantage-related shenanigans happening that there is almost no time to explore the social dinamics impacts of those shenanigans to create tension and twists and turns in the narrative.

    not gonna lie i LOVED this season. i’ve been self proclaimed super fan of the show since 38 and binged almost every season when lockdown first happened. After the hiatus following 40, i was really worried about where the show was gonna go next. I was scared to watch 41, and when it wrapped i told my mom i was never watching the show again. it became one of my least favorite seasons ever and i did not want any future seasons to ruin how much i absolutely love this show more than 41 already did. i waited until after 42 finished airing to even start it. i left that season unsatisfied as well and only watched 43 because i had nothing else to do at the beginning of this summer (yes i waited that long to start it). 43 restored my faith in the show a bit, as i felt actually invested in the show for the first time in the new era. i tried so hard to avoid any and all spoilers for 44, but i accidentally saw that yam yam was the winner and heidi was the runner up. i was so upset and actually wasn’t planning on even watching 44, at least not for a while. BUT, the promo for 44 intrigued me and i just had to start it immediately after finishing 43. 44 captivated me and i finished the entire season in a day and a half. it reminded me why i loved the show with a cast full of people i genuinely was rooting for and wanting to watch. i couldn’t help myself and just had to hinge the whole show in like 2 sittings. i completely understand it’s flaws, but am so thankful that survivor actually delivered a season i genuinely enjoyed watching again, and i will always have love for this season for doing just that. i will probably never rewatch 41 or 42 (partly because of the hour glass twist that i’m glad is universally recognized as awful), but i know i’ll be binging 44 again. despite the issues and weird twists and useless advantages, the cast make this season brilliant that i actually enjoyed watching them navigate twists that i would have hated with any other group of people. thankful for 44 for reminding me how much i do truly love this show :)
