Vortex Ring and Air Mass Boundaries

A perturbed four vortex ring near is shown near the south pole. Also shown are the 'moving walls' of attractive and repulsive Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS). The model shows a hyperbolic region and the formation of filamentary structures that extend over large portions of the sphere. Groups of green particles are shown to help illustrate the mixing and stretching.
