I also think it lingers on Rand long enough for book readers to understand he's getting it, at least subconciously. Also probably projecting this, but at 1:16 he seems to be looking around to see how everyone is reacting to a song about a dude who axes his whole family. Maybe with a little guilt.
The Rains of Castamere, Merry's Song, all the LOTR end credit songs, The Misty Mountain's Cold, Jaskier's songs and now this. There is something about songs that adds a whole new layer of immersion and epicness. I am hoping to hear much more of Thom Merrilin.

Thom was pretty clearly upset about it when he was talking to Mat. It was just some fun speculation at why he sang that particular song at this tavern.

It's a perfect voice and performance for this particular situation. Technical perfection in context. The high part in the middle gives me goosebumps every time.
I think we're going to find out that the poor soul Liandran Gentled and probably killed in the first episode was Owen. Thom isn't just singing about Lews Therin, he's pouring his grief out about his nephew. Though I think the show will change Owen to be his son, and that's why Thom will really help the boys.
Honestly, why change the source material to different but close to the same. Are they trying to have a measuring contest with a dead author. Trust me screen writers, robert jordan was longer, thicker, and had throbbing veins for her pleasure!!!!!

They have to really show it and the exposition that would have to go into justifying thoms motives will take up too much screen time compared to the much easier the to do cold open that includes Moraine and sets up reds as antagonistic.

One the one hand, that does not look anything like Thom Merrilin. But on the other hand, I can absolutely see this interpretation nailing a queen and a sorceress. Maybe they can get him to grow out his mustache in later episodes to get the best of both worlds,

Personally, I'm glad that they switched from harp to guitar. Harp music tends to sound strange to modern ears; but, the guitar is pretty relatable (while still able to sound appropriate to the setting).

And a harp really doesn't sound 'strange' It's just a plucked string instrument just like a guitar. It would be more akin to a Celtic lap harp rather than the huge orchestral things. If they really didn't want a harp, they could have done something like a Lute, something a little closer to Thom's wheelhouse. Lute & Flute. xD
BOOK SPOILERS: Holy crap, I just realized the reason Rand is tearing up is probably because he subconsciously remembers being Lews Therin. AUGH! The foreshadowing in this show is too good!
EVEN MORE SPOILERS: I honestly doubt that he can remember anything of his past life at this point in time. Correct me if I'm wrong but him remembering LTT's life was a symptom of his madness which comes from channeling, and the only moment we get a hint that he channeled so far in this show it's actually in this episode but comes later, when he breaks down the door to run away from the darkfriend.
This song might be the best part of the show yet. It's a perfect way to layer in information naturally into the world. Later, those that don't already know, will look back and understand what this means in hindsight.
Great choice of clothing, amazing choice of moment to introduce thom, and above all, superb casting. I am a die hard book fan and yet, i am consuming this show as a work of its own and enjoying the easter eggs that are here and there for fans to pick. Great job!
To preface this, I love the scene and the casting, I just wish his mustaches were longer. Thom’s long mustaches are such an important part of his characterization, I wonder if the actor will grow them out in the future.
I'm trying to take the same approach. I knew they would have to change things from the books.... I just hope they keep them to good changes like this one. I'm approaching the series as one of the "other worlds" that you can reach through the Portal Stones... That helps my brain deal with the differences rather than obsessing over them... lol

That prologue might be too confusing for the audience, I think we will get it later. It also creates a mystery for the audience, they want to know what exactly happened to the Dragon. So when the flashbacks about Lews Therin come out it will be very powerful, because by then the audience will have some understanding of what happened.

Same here, i never like songs in books, since i can never imagine a compelling rythim or harmony, and just read lyrics of songs i dont know isn't entertaining. But the songs in the series are coming off GREAT.

I didn't know anything about the books until this show but when I heard the song I instantly thought of The Dragon Reborn. He is the man who broke the world and can't forget.

When I first watched the episodes I really worried that they weren't really explaining enough and that the non book audience would be confused. Since I read the books I have all the context so its hard to guage whats confusing and whats not, but I've seen a lot of comments like this which makes me happy. I predict a choral or orchestrated version of this song playing over the credits right after either the dramatic reveal of -CHARACTER- being the Dragon Reborn or of -CHARACTER- getting their first wave of hard memories from Lews Therin. And it will be so darn good.
I'm gonna be honest I don't know shit bout this show (or book series now I see the comments) and I'm not TOO interested but my dad put it on a few hours ago and has been binging it and I just can't help but love this song
Having watched the show and read the books, this song is a complete masterpiece. This song will be even better when you know a little about a historic figure from the book series, the one that dies in the prologue of the book. And better again when you finish book 12 and learn much more about that character's torments.
Here's my advice. Dont read the books yet. They've changed enough (and thats okay, change is built into the world) where you may slightly confuse yourself. Wait til the seasons is over, go in understanding that some stuff in book and show will be different and enjoy that you essentially get two versions of the same story.
For those who think this is too-on-nose, bear in mind that we in the know are perfectly aware that this fits with Lews Therin's final moments. But there's nothing specific to Lews Therin in the song. This is equally applicable to any person who destroyed their own life, such as through a destructive addiction. In fact, that's probably more likely the In-universe source of the song. Your average Andoran peasant won't know what we know about Lews Therin.
No I think everybody (at least everyone who knows the story of Lews Therin) knows who this song is about. We have the line "He caused the whole world's breaking", so obviously this song is about the breaking of the world. Still it's a nice ballad, gleemen would sing about such an important event. Very appropriate.

This is my favorite scene in the show so far. It's so beautiful to hear, and it's such a great way to introduce Thom! The song also describes Lews Therin and the Breaking of the World perfectly
Ever since I heard this song for the first time I couldn't get it out of my head, there's something seriously eerie and droll about it, but it also draws all your attention in at the same time. It's really well done
haven't read the books, but latest this really got me hooked on the show. I feel like songs in a book don't work that well, but in a show or movie they actually make it feel more real to me. People do sing every now and then, whether it's for themselves or for others. And it is also a great way of providing information or setting the tone of a scene

Guys notice the difference in behavior between all the listeners and the barkeep, she seems to be enjoying but she can't stand still and her mouth keeps twitching. Her smile also never reaches her eyes, so it's fake. Extremely subtle but on another re-watch it can be seen

thom's actor stole episode 3. dude has an insane on-screen presence. also, giving thom a western vibe was a surprisingly cool change.

This song might be the best part of the show yet. It's a perfect way to layer in information naturally into the world. Later, those that don't already know, will look back and understand what this means in hindsight.

Great choice of clothing, amazing choice of moment to introduce thom, and above all, superb casting. I am a die hard book fan and yet, i am consuming this show as a work of its own and enjoying the easter eggs that are here and there for fans to pick. Great job!
To preface this, I love the scene and the casting, I just wish his mustaches were longer. Thom’s long mustaches are such an important part of his characterization, I wonder if the actor will grow them out in the future.
I'm trying to take the same approach. I knew they would have to change things from the books.... I just hope they keep them to good changes like this one. I'm approaching the series as one of the "other worlds" that you can reach through the Portal Stones... That helps my brain deal with the differences rather than obsessing over them... lol

Yeah, this was lit AF. This is nothing like how I pictured Thom in the books, but I’m down with this version for sure.
I’d have preferred how I envisioned him but we can’t always get what we want! He’s pretty good nevertheless and the song was very cool

That prologue might be too confusing for the audience, I think we will get it later. It also creates a mystery for the audience, they want to know what exactly happened to the Dragon. So when the flashbacks about Lews Therin come out it will be very powerful, because by then the audience will have some understanding of what happened.

Yeah I think from what I’ve heard we’ll get the prologue and Lews Therin in probably S2, possibly S3.

This series needs to be filled with songs. I hated them in the books but god damn it'd feel weird if they werent in the show. Excellent song!

Same here, i never like songs in books, since i can never imagine a compelling rythim or harmony, and just read lyrics of songs i dont know isn't entertaining. But the songs in the series are coming off GREAT.

I didn't know anything about the books until this show but when I heard the song I instantly thought of The Dragon Reborn. He is the man who broke the world and can't forget.

When I first watched the episodes I really worried that they weren't really explaining enough and that the non book audience would be confused. Since I read the books I have all the context so its hard to guage whats confusing and whats not, but I've seen a lot of comments like this which makes me happy. I hope you continue to enjoy the show :)

Having watched the show and read the books, this song is a complete masterpiece.
This song will be even better when you know a little about a historic figure from the book series, the one that dies in the prologue of the book.
And better again when you finish book 12 and learn much more about that character's torments.

Here's my advice. Dont read the books yet.
They've changed enough (and thats okay, change is built into the world) where you may slightly confuse yourself.
Wait til the seasons is over, go in understanding that some stuff in book and show will be different and enjoy that you essentially get two versions of the same story.
honestly, read just the prologue of Eye of the World and then relisten to this song. it'll hit you way harder

For those who think this is too-on-nose, bear in mind that we in the know are perfectly aware that this fits with Lews Therin's final moments. But there's nothing specific to Lews Therin in the song. This is equally applicable to any person who destroyed their own life, such as through a destructive addiction. In fact, that's probably more likely the In-universe source of the song. Your average Andoran peasant won't know what we know about Lews Therin.
Knowing Thom, I'm sure he knows it's about the Dragon, but he's performing it thinking about his nephew.

No I think everybody (at least everyone who knows the story of Lews Therin) knows who this song is about. We have the line "He caused the whole world's breaking", so obviously this song is about the breaking of the world. Still it's a nice ballad, gleemen would sing about such an important event. Very appropriate.

This is my favorite scene in the show so far. It's so beautiful to hear, and it's such a great way to introduce Thom! The song also describes Lews Therin and the Breaking of the World perfectly

Ever since I heard this song for the first time I couldn't get it out of my head, there's something seriously eerie and droll about it, but it also draws all your attention in at the same time. It's really well done
haven't read the books, but latest this really got me hooked on the show. I feel like songs in a book don't work that well, but in a show or movie they actually make it feel more real to me. People do sing every now and then, whether it's for themselves or for others. And it is also a great way of providing information or setting the tone of a scene

Guys notice the difference in behavior between all the listeners and the barkeep, she seems to be enjoying but she can't stand still and her mouth keeps twitching. Her smile also never reaches her eyes, so it's fake. Extremely subtle but on another re-watch it can be seen
